Alex, you do have quite a quandry there on your hands. I would be tempted to try and move it even though it will set the plant back when you do so. It make take it a year or two to get back to its current state. I wouldn't worry about having to dig up the lawn and any residual nitrogen in the soil since the grass will more than likely have used up any previously applied fertilizer. Addition of more topsoil would help dilute any that is left. If you weren't having to add the foot of soil all at once to the existing site you could probably keep the clematis where it is. We are constantly telling people that clematis should be planted deeper in the ground than they are in their original pots, but one foot of soil would be an awful lot to add at once over the crown of the plant. If you could place a bottomless drum around the plant using say a cardboard form that is used to pour concrete or something similar, you could gradually add soil into the form over the course of a year or more as the clematis grows and that could possibly work. It would be definitely more work than just moving it but only you can decide which you are willing to try to keep it in its current location. Let us know what you decide and how it works out.

Hi, Sorry for the delay. And apologies for the long response. I attempted a system restore and somewhere along the way my computer had stopped booting up completely. While I never got the blue screen of death, I did get the black screen of purgatory. ;-) Apparently (based on later events) the system restore never completed. At some point during the process I got a black screen with a white arrow/cursor (perhaps it was just after the "starting windows" screen). And it just stopped there. I manually shut down (turned off the switch at the surge protector) and tried restarting, but the computer couldn't get past that black screen! Well, at that point I started trying different things: - trying to boot up in safe mode (didn't work; got stuck at the same point), - trying the 'start up repair' option on the same screen as the safe mode option. That didn't work either and it was during these attempts that I got a blue screen saying, "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer." Etc. But there was no way to shut down, so I had to do it the old fashioned way: turn off at the surge protector. Then on to trying something else. - trying the Windows Memory DIagnostic Tool, which I found inadvertently while poking around the same screen general menu area as the above. The WMDT started a two-part scan and froze during part 2. While it was scanning, though, it did display a "Status:" message indicating that hardware problems were detected and that I should contact the computer manufacturer. Well, instead I called the delightfully honest and knowledgeable computer guy who built my computer for me. :-) (more on that below) Finally, I again tried booting up and ended up on the same screen as the one where I found the WMDT option. At the top it simply said "Windows 7," which I thought was just a heading, but it was an actual option. So, I selected it just to see what would happen, and suddenly it took me all the way to the desktop screen! I had/have no idea how that happened! But once there, and after looking things over, I realized that the system restore I attempted earlier never went through successfully. Neither did my Pale Moon uninstall. Well, I skipped attempting another system restore and instead did the following: - again used geekuninstall to remove Pale Moon (this time also choosing the "forced removal" option, which ended up removing all registry items as well; I hadn't done that the first time), - shut down properly (first time I could do that in a while!) and fully (i.e. not the 'restart' option) and restarted manually, which finally took me through to the desktop as it should! - ran all scans (AV, MBAM, SAS) as complete scans, all of which were successful and detected no problems! Since then I have had no problems booting up or shutting down and no crashes of FF. :-) So, as far as I can determine just from the computer's behavior, it was probably all caused by using the 64-bit Pale Moon. :-/ Btw, my computer guy was going to come over and physically look at the computer (based on the computer's behavior and the status message I got (above), he suspected harddisc issues). But after telling him that I am now able to reboot and that everything is pretty much back to normal, we will be setting up a time and he will be able to access the computer remotely and do various checks. Now, in response to posts made since my previous one: owbist - Thanks for the link. :-) But I don't have the disc necessary to do that. DA - I was watching either You Tube videos or videos at the 'watchseries' site (mentioned here at this forum on occasion). Once in a while I watch old American TV shows from that site, but it never gave me any issues. And it seems that it really wasn't the problem this time either. It was just during the viewing of them that PM or FF would crash; more a symptom than the main problem. mikie - Thanks for your further suggestions! I never had a chance to read them before my journey into limbo, and now that things are working I'm afraid to mess with success at the moment by doing something I could easily mess up! :-D But I'll definitely bookmark this thread for future reference. Hi big al 41, When your browser runs an applet, the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) stores the downloaded files into its cache folder (C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache) for quick execution later and better performance. Both good and malicious applets are stored in the Java cache directory and your anti-virus may detect them and provide alerts as what you experienced with MSE. Notification of these files as a threat does not always mean that a machine has been infected; it indicates that a program included the viral class file but this does not mean that it used the malicious functionality. However, when alerted to this type of threat, it's a good practice to clear the Java cache and clean out Windows temporary files. To do that I personally use TFC. Download then double-click TFC.exe to run it. TFC will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin. Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Please let TFC run uninterrupted until it is finished. Don't be alarmed when the desktop disappears, it will reappear upon reboot. Once TFC is finished it should restart your computer. If it does not, please manually restart the computer yourself to ensure a complete cleaning. Also ensure that your Java is up to date at all times. The most recent update is Java 6 Update 27 though Java 7 is now available as well. I have installed the Java 7 version and have had no issues so far. The choice is yours as to which you would like. Also make sure that all older versions of Java have been removed from your system by going to Add/Remove in XP or Programs and Features in Vista/Win7. If you'd feel more comfortable try the Online scan I mentioned above.

I second what mizscarlett said. PTSD or even TSD is a very real thing that happens to many people, not just soldiers. Arcy- I understand why you wrote what you did, it is the common stance of the general public to abused and battered persons; I used to feel much the same. BUT....unless you have lived through it yourself and had the same crushing emotions, guilt, worthlessness and self loathing that these people have experienced from years of emotional abuse, you really are in no place to judge. It is easy to view as an outsider and say, "you should have just left", it is FAR more difficult to do when you've been, slowly over time, made to live in fear for your life and the lives of those you love or been made to believe that you are, in fact, worthless. The worst damage people like OPs husband do isn't physical, it's emotional and mental. Her mother was willing to pay for the divorce but she was so worried for her mother's safety from this lunatic that she was willing to endure additional abuse to keep her mother safe. You berating her for something she already regrets is simply blaming the victim and encourages other people to NOT come forward. Many people who are abused (not saying this is necessarily the OPs stance) state that their abuser is quite charming at first, a "catch". Slowly, over time the verbal and emotional abuse escalates but they still say, "s/he's so great, and they've never hurt me!". Then the first time comes and they are physically abused. They are so shocked that it happened and "it's never happened before" that they write it off. It happens again, a few months go by and it happens again...and again....and again. At this point it is happening at an alarming frequency but by this point, the battered person is so broken, so ashamed at not recognizing what was initially happening, that they stay silent. The victim blames themself. THEN, in worst case scenarios, they begin to actually believe what the abuser says. They believe they deserve this. They believe they messed up, believe they are worthless, believe they are at fault. Frankly, as much as I want to judge and blame someone for their past mistakes, I can NOT sit by and blame a battered person for their poor decisions regarding their abuser. It's not right and it's not fair. msgenie- you've been given some great advice already. The only thing I can add to it is that you've already given him power and control over 50 years of your life. He is gone now and you can finally live. Try to NOT let his ghost take any more of your life from you. You only get one life, one chance at this big game; make it count. Regret nothing, learn from it.
