Gw has recently made some changes and there are many more agressive ads a lot of people have changed over to firefox with adblock plus add on and the easy list subscription. That will get rid of all of them if you want to do that we can help provide the links

I turned on Pop-up Blocker but I still see some pop-ups. Why?

The following are some common reasons why you might still be seeing pop-ups:

You might have software, such as adware or spyware, on your computer that is opening pop-up windows. To stop these pop-ups, you will have to identify the software that is opening them and then remove it or change its settings to stop it from opening pop-up windows. For information about detecting and removing adware and spyware, see Spyware: frequently asked questions.

Some windows with active content are not blocked.

Internet Explorer will not block pop-ups from websites that are in the Local intranet zone. If you want the pop-ups from these websites to be blocked, you have to remove the websites from this zone. For more information, see Security zones: adding or removing websites.

To remove a website from your list of sites that allow pop-ups

Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Internet Explorer.

Click the Tools button, click Pop-up Blocker, and then click Pop-up Blocker Settings.

In the Address of website to allow box, click the website you want to remove from the list, and then click Remove.

Repeat step 3 for every website you want to remove from the list of websites that can display pop-ups. When you are finished, click Close.

I have IE7 and followed those directions but my computer says all pop-ups are already blocked except Ancestry.com. I have never had a pop-up problem until these recent GW changes. Had no ads at all on GW and have been here since 2002.

It is driving me crazy--what to do without changing browsers? I like IE.

ginny have you tried firefox how do you know you might like it even better? It is very very easy to do and you really should always have at least 2 browser on your pc in case IE fails so you can still get online so putting firefox on is a very good thing, if you decide you don't like it then just use IE you can have multiple browsers with no problem and you can use both at the same time. To use firefox just click on the firefox icon, to use IE just click on the IE icon simple as that. If you decide to go with firefox I will be happy to help you do that and add the things you need to stop the ads.

you can watch this little youtube video to see how easy it is just pay no attention to the version numbers he mentions it is an old video and the versions are newer now but same instructions work. That way you can get an idea of just how easy it is. And when you do the install of firefox it will ask if you want to import your settings and bookmarks from IE just say yes to all of that and it will set up your firefox exactly like you have your IE but will not touch your IE. You can select to not have it as default and leave IE as default that can always be changed.

I'm having similar problems even with Firefox. Ad's which never appeared before are there and moving around. I have Flashblock, Adblock Plus and easylist. Never got flashing ads before and I updated flashblock yesterday, still have moving ads.

I get a small box above the ad which says, 'block' I click it and add filter. But I need to do this constantly as I move from page to page. AdBlock doesn't seem to block automatically anymore.

OK....this new Firefox stuff is amazing!!!

Raven & others here got me into using Firefox today.
(I started the "servicehost" thread here...)

I watched the little video Raven linked, and realized I hadn't "Subscribed" to the filters. It's not immediately obvious until you click the Options & File menu-words in the Add-ons window that opens.

If I can do it...ANYONE can!!

I went back to this GW site, and lo & behold...NO ADS!! NOTHING!!
I then tried out Tripadvisor.com. There's always a big airfare window that pops up, and doesn't go away until it expands itself...slowly...then you can close it.

try going back to where you get your easylist subscription and clicking on the add to adblock plus again it may have for some reason got corrupted this happened to someone else on another forum.

be sure to restart firefox again and make sure your little ABP red stop sign on your browser is still showing as red you can hover your mouse over the stop sign and it will tell you exactly what it has blocked, to change any settings right click on the stop sign and you can access those there to make sure something is not turned off for a specific page or site.

I forgot about the "Stop-sign" button! I couldn't see it!
It's literally ON Snoopy's head, right next to the Red doghouse...my eye didn't pick it up right away!

When hovering (using this site/page), it says...
"Blocked items on this page: 10 out of 80 (also whitelisted: 0, hidden=1).
What does that stuff mean?
