How to make a dvd slideshow?

I have Windows XP; my son took photos from Kodak Easyshare that were on our computer, added music and (supposedly successfully) burned them onto a Memorex dvd+rw using Windows Movie Maker. When we went to play it on the laptop and also our dvd player, it would not play. Not knowing if it mattered, I went out and bought Memorex dvd+r, tried again and still the same thing.

It was going to be a gift for my parents for Christmas. I have been wanting to do something like this for several years now and I have absolutely no idea what to do; my son is 13 and knows more about it than I do, but he does not know why it didn't work. Should the dvd have been formatted? Should dvd-r have been used? I appreciate any input you wonderful, knowledgeable people may have for me.

Typically windows Movie Maker saves the file in .AVI format... you need to convert it to DVD format.

If your burning software doesnt offer dvd format maybe look at few youtube video's how to 'convert avi to dvd' here's a youtube video I searched.... that used this software...

There's many other programs that will do this. Usually your burning program will have a save as dvd audio/video file configuration.

I downloaded PhotoStory 3 about 5 years ago and made a DVD (w/music) using pictures I'd taken when my friends daughter had her baby. You can download it here FREE http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/PhotoStory/default.mspx

I made 2 videos that year, both with music and both played on the DVD player.

Then,then year I made another video/dvd of pictures I'd taken at my daughters wedding in Feb.! No how no way would it let me burn the video to a dvd. Turned out I had to purchase a "plug-in" for PhotoStory 3. Once I did that, it was a breeze!

I made one added 5 carols, a card at the beginning and one on the end, pics. of all our decorations inside and out in between with very kewl transitions, and put one in several family members xmas cards, in red, green or blue sleeves.. and I did it all for free with a download allows 38 or so pics.in free version.

I think one of the Nero programs you have will do the job. Check the link below for info about it. Video Help dot com is the best for video information. On the left side of the page click Author. I organize mine by genre so if I feel like action I don't have to remember the title of all the actions films I have and search alphabetically. Genre is so much eaiser because it puts all the same type movies in one place. Of course for those actors that I am in love with like Dolph Lungren, Vin Diesel they have their own section or the what I call the eye candy section. The tv section just has all the tv shows together and then the crime shows together, scifi shows etc. As for whether or not something would be considered drama or action etc. I make that call. I put it in the section I most relate the movie with.

Make sure the slide show is saved to the computer - step 3 in Windows Movie Maker.

I choose to save it as High Quality.

Then take this file - not the project file - and burn it to a DVD. I use Roxio to burn it. Don't burn it as a data DVD - you have to actually make a playable DVD.

Be sure to check your parents DVD player model to be sure it will play all types of DVDs. I think most of the newer ones play both types, but I have one that plays only DVD-R and one that plays only DVD+R.
