Green Zeus, I have NO idea how he managed to screw it up. Not only did I give him the drawing shown, I wrote in the exact measurements on the drawing. I think he must have flipped the drawing (or one of his workers did), because they managed to screw it up so badly that there is a hole for a recessed light where the over-fridge cabinet will be!!! Unbelieveable! Anyway, I've been talking to BF about the 2 dimmer issue, and for some reason he thinks two dimmers are a good idea, so I may leave those, but obviously they're going to have to redo the entire ceiling. I'll be lucky to get back into my apartment by christmas at this rate...

I was apprehensive about using them in my ceiling fan but I got them cheap enough that it was worth a try. Plus I used the light so much that the savings should offset the cost of replacement. And I was replacing incandescents in it anyway so part of the cost is offset. Since replacing (however many years ago) I haven't had to replace one bulb. 52 watts now vs 240-300 watts before. The savings add up on this application. Yes they look different in the fixture, but I don't find the look objectionable at all. I think they look better than a boring regular bulb. Plus I don't look at them when they're on anyway. I even put them in the enclosed fixtures. They run cooler than incandescents so I figure if the others were OK, these should be. Although most now are made for enclosed fixtures anyway.

In my experience Edison type or carbon filament bulbs give off much less light per watt than a modern (tungsten-?) bulb. I lit the sconces and small pendant fixtures in a former apartment in Edison, carbon-filament bulbs, and it was "mood lighting", very warm and very dim. Seven bulbs in the LR did not really "light" it by any modern standards (40-60 watt bulbs) If I needed to see anything, I had lamps with regular bulbs.

Bought the Philips 60w "Warm Glow" LEDs at HD yesterday (under $10/ea). On full power they aren't as bright as an incandescent 60w bulb. They DO have the softer, warmer glow that an incandescent bulb does and warms even more as it dims. Still doesn't dim as low as a "real" light bulb. I do like how LEDs don't produces as much heat. Looks like there is going to have to be some compromising. As "cave like" as DH's bathroom is (and he wanted it that way), 180 total watts probably isn't going to be enough light. The 300w (dimmable) was plenty light but it was so white and messed with his bathroom color palette...does he care? NO! But I do :) What to do. Call Philips and ask them to make a 100w "warm glow" LED that will dim lower. That's it! I'm sure they'll get right on that! <g> I considered buying a set of the Crees too but I'm really not liking the whiteness of the LEDs. I'm sure it's OK in some applications. Oh, the Philips don't visibly flicker or hum when turned down.
