Another HD defrag?

I tried to defrag my niece's computer. When I got to the screen and clicked on the HP recovery D: drive, I got a message that there is only 13% of memory remaining and I needed 15% to defrag that drive. How should I proceed from there?

Why would you be trying to defrag the recovery partition? Everything in there is possibly zipped and should not need to be defragged. You can defrag the C:\ drive of course.

On a safety note have you burned that recovery partition to CDs for safety in case your hard drive fails? Friends of mine have an HP and they were allowed only one burning of the recovery data to CDs

When I click on defrag in Help and Support, the screen comes up with the C and D drives both on the screen. I thought that since they were both up there, they both had to be defragged. If I'm not mistaken the D drive is on top and highlighted when the screen comes up.

Okay, thanks, Mikie ! Also, you said, Like it says, I run the optimize defrag about every week or so. The check box in the options to move system files to the front of the heap, I would avoid that if you plan on running regular scheduled default type windows defrags also. Does this have something to do with the defragging that is (or can be) done at boot up ? I read something to that effect somewhere, but couldn't quite 'get' what was being talked about.

The reviews on it are not that great and if you are not a power user then why even bother??? The regular defrag on the pc is fine for the average user. Plus it is just one more program on the pc to go haywire. Here is a quote from one of the reviews: "Unfortunately I will not be using UD because it failed my "torture test" and my "large files" test. It chokes on big files. The moment I created my two large SQL data files on drive C:, the analyse time went from a few seconds to 14 minutes. When I decompressed these files to their full size and then requested a defrag, it failed, or at least didn't do anything to defrag the file. I should point out that WDD failed to defrag them either, and contig.exe complained about not enough free disk space. I suggest she uninstall any unused programs and do a disk cleanup Start > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. I use ccleaner but disk cleanup will get rid of some of the junk. She can then start the computer in safe mode by tapping the F8 key as the computer starts up. She will get a screen where she can choose to startup in safe mode. She can then right click on 'My Computer' click on 'Properties' click on the 'Tools' tab and check for errors by clicking 'Check Now' and then defrag by clicking 'Defragment Now'. This can be done without starting in safe mode but for someone who is new to the process I think this is the easiest way.

Hi owbist, Thrdfrt what each poster above has noted is good advice but as you have seen they all use different methods. Unlike any other home user item a computer offers so many ways to accomplish a task. None need be wrong, it is simply a personal preference. OK, so from what you are saying is that, you can defrag in safe mode if you want or you can just use the other programs without using safe mode if you wish. That makes total sense to me. So it is as simple as that. That's good to know and now I can make my decision as to what I want to do without fear of messing up. Thanks for the great explanation. BTW, I hope that you all know that I wasn't thinking in the terms of right or wrong here, it was all about me being able to understand it. Sometimes I see things more complicated than what it actually is and my focus is, there is only one way to fix this problem. In this case, I don't need to stay on that one way track, I understand now that I can choose a different route that still gets me to the same place. Well your choice of course but I would not mess with the recovery partition. But if you have created a set of recovery disks perhaps there is nothing to lose. When Defrag appears you het to select the drive you wish to defrag, be safe and just select the C: drive.

Use the analyse button to see how fragmented the drives are.

Thanks for your advice. I have not backed up the D drive. How many disks would that take? I just want to make sure I have enough on hand before starting.

When we did our friends HP recovery disks we needed 3 altogether. I seem to recollect there was i=an icon, either on the desktop or in the Control panel to perform the burn. It was a really simple task. Be sure to mark the CDs so if you ever need to recover you know the right order.
