Need Ideas for teacher gifts

My daughter is the chairperson on the Junior High Honor Society. They just met and decided they wanted to give the teachers small gifts or treat for the next holidays that are left this school year. The Next holiday is St. Patrick. I am a crafty person but this is one holiday that I don't do anything for. So I have no ideas for her. I could use your help. Something easy that they can make with a card or poem is what I am thinking of. Any suggestions?

Shamrock pins made out of shrinky dinks and then glittered.

I've always thought it would be cute to get a small figurine from a $1 store and have accessories for each occassion like the holiday geese.

As a teacher, I might suggest candy or candles - both things that you use up. I truly appreciate all the teacher gifts I receive, but it is hard to find a place for them after a while. On the other hand, I teach preschool, so I probably recieve alot more gifts than an upper grade teacher. It's very nice that the kids want to give gifts to their teachers!

ccaggiano, I agree that the raspberry chocolate jam is one to make when berries are in season! (And preferably at Pick-your-own prices. This summer I got young nieces who were visiting to help with the picking---definitely the ideal way to go for that one. ;-) ) Your thought to go with something cranberry makes sense to me given the time of year. (Cranberries were on sale here last week for only 1.99 a 3-cup bag; maybe you'll get a sale this week!) I haven't tried the brandied conserve but I've made the Cranberry Pear Lemon jam from Small Batch---it rocks, and makes a lovely deep red-coloured jar for gifting. Decent pears are usually still available from California. Another good option for this time of year might be some kind of orange or tangerine marmalade thing. But I don't have a specific suggestion for a good one, and people's tastes vary widely as to whether they like bitter or sweet marmalades. Habanero gold is another possibility---make it mild (with just a hint of hab and mostly sweet peppers). It looks SO pretty. One package of dried apricots, a four-pack of sweet peppers and one or two hot peppers should do it. Use Carol's big batch "Hot 'n Sweet Confetti Jelly" version to save on pectin costs. The other key to economical gift-giving is to give four-ounce jars---they are cute and the recipients like 'em just as much as half-pint jars. (OTOH, if you HAVE half-pint jars, you won't be saving by buying a new box of jars. ;-) ) Good luck and have fun. I agree with sage721 that your homemade gifts will be deeply appreciated. We had the same problem for years. We have a group of seven couples (all close in age). We would take trips together once every year or so but during the year we would take turns hosting a monthly dinner. Of course this always necessitated a hostess gift. All of us are comfortably off and at our age have everything (material) that we want or need. It drove me crazy because I was constantly being gifted with craft type items. I am just not into cutesy things and I had a difficult time coming up with items that I thought the other ladies would enjoy or use. I failingly ended up giving food items or fresh flowers. We all finally came to a consensus that we should stop doing hostess gifts and at Christmas put funds together to donate to a charity. Thank goodness! The pressure every month is off and we can give to those in need. It's a win/win.

I am a teacher and love getting gifts no matter how small or silly. It feels so good to be appreciated. I am a music teacher, so I don't get large presents or often, but usually 5 or six kids will bring something and it makes my day. My favorites include a heartfelt note written by the kid or parent, HEALTHY food gifts like a soup mix or fruit, gift cards to half price books (they go further there), cool magnets for my whiteboard, a nice pen or other practical classroom items. One mom embroidered a tote bag with my name and that was really cool. Another bought a bunch of inexpensive plants from Home Depot (think 6-packs) potted them in baby food jars and tied on a pretty ribbon. She had one for the librarian, principal, etc. and they said Thanks for helping me grow. Not very expensive or time consuming, but so special. No, I don't feel badly towards kids who bring nothing, that is really the norm, but a cute little gift will cheer me up and probably make me a better teacher that day. Honestly, though, when a child draws a picture of me holding his hand - well, that is just as special and uplifting.

Slight tangent: she has tried for *three* *years* to get a HS history teaching job??!! Oh dear, this has me very worried. My own daughter graduated in May with a history major and secondary teaching certification and her dream is to teach exactly that. She has been shocked and dismayed that although she has been diligently applying all over, even hand carrying personalized application packets directly to schools and has at least had several interviews, she hasn't gotten a job. School starts here a week from Monday and she is feeling devastated...I'm puzzled that the field seems so incredibly difficulty to enter. I didn't dream she wouldn't be hired somewhere by this point. She says once school starts, and she doesn't get a permanent position (which seems likely), she will try to substitute but at this point we're worried nobody will even deign to give her that chance. And she graduated cum laude from a well regarded university! Is it really that tough to get hired as a teacher? Seems all one hears is that the pay is bad, teachers are overworked, disrespected etc, leaving the profession in droves....so why is it impossible to get a job? Semi-facetious, but only semi. A nice mug (check the dollar store) filled with mints or candies(mayby some gold coins!)of some sort, wrapped in green celophane or tissue. Tie it up with a pretty ribbon.

Easter, large plastic egg, filled with post-its, erasers or some other small office item, maybe a nice stamp (some HS teachers still give out stickers!)

Susan has the right idea. I used to make these for my co-workers. I would buy a coffee mug at the $1 store, get small cellophane bags and fill with candy, green m&m's, etc. I would add a pencil with shamrocks on it, etc.

Another idea is cake in a cup.

What about some Irish Dew - a bottle/can of Mountain Dew with the following poem on a tag:

I ran into a leprechaun
And asked if he'd been told
Where the rainbow ended
With the treasured pot of gold.
He didn't know, but then gave me
A special Irish brew (dew)
To brighten your St. Paddy's Day
I'm sharing some with you!
OR.....
Sit right down I have something for you,
Here's a green bottle of very good brew. (of special Irish Dew)

or - take a small terra cotta pot and spray paint it gold (pot of gold) and put a roll of lifesavers in it standing up(the rainbow) and wrap with tulle and tie with a nice green ribbon and a tag wishing a Happy St. Pat's Day.
