electric pressure cooker

I have the regular on top of the stove pressure cooker but tonight I read on a thread about electric pressure cookers. I will be getting an induction range eventually and I'll need a different pressure cooker or I will need to buy a hot plate for my existing pressure cooker. I'd like to hear about the electric ones. I need something big enough to hold at least 10# of chicken hindquarters. I make my own dog food so I need a big cooker.

Some discussion of various reviews at http://www.consumersearch.com/pressure-cookers/best-pressure-cookers. Based on that quick read, I was dissuaded from further pursuit of the electric option, but I do have a gas range.

What about a cast iron frypan or round griddle underneath your current cooker? I don't know -- trying to be creative. Our 12SK has an 11" flat bottom (and the helper handle is beyond helpful in moving the thing). A quick check shows it priced at $19 from Target.

I have a small (4 qt) electric PC--it was a gift. I never use it. I GREATLY prefer the stovetop models.

I have a 6 qt Kuhn Rikon and a Fagor 'Splendid' set with an 8 and a 4 qt pot with a lid that fits them both (about $99 on Amazon, $90 this week on Overstock). They work fine on induction (I have an induction hot plate and I've tested them) as well as gas.

You can get a Fagor 10 qt 'Splendid' PC for $80 at Amazon or their 'Elite' for about $90...yes, that's not cheap but IMHO it's a quality item and worth the $$$.

I doubt that you'll find an electric PC with that capacity for that price. I do a lot of pressure cooking, and I think Fagor is a very good value--and the models I've used work fine on either gas, electric or induction.

Stuffed Peppers in Pressure Cooker

I have a stovetop Presto, but there was no recipe for stuffed peppers in my manual. I checked an older pressure cooker cookbook that I have and they had stuffed peppers (with cooked ground beef and cooked rice for the stuffing) that is cooked1 12 minutes for 4 bell peppers at the 15 pounds pressure setting - or high pressure for those cookers having high/low settings, and a natural cool down for 5 minutes, then the cooker is placed in the sink with cool water running over it until all the pressure is gone from the pan (called a quick release). If your meat and rice are raw when you stuff the peppers, you will need to cook a longer time. Does you cooker manual give a time for cooking rice? With my stove top cooker, white rice cooks in 5-8 minutes. If I remember correctly, the electric cookers take a little bit more time to cook than the stove top versions. Check your manual for the time to cook ground beef and the time to cook white rice (if you are using white rice?) and then cook for the longer amount of time. The peppers should be done by then, too, but if not, you could always cover, re-set and cook another 2-3 minutes to be sure the peppers are done. That's what I would do. Teresa

I got into pressure cooking when my mom gave me an electric pressure cooker. Did okay, and got me interested enough to the point where I bought regular stovetop PC's. I now find that I never use the electric one. That's not to talk you out of your purchase, but that's how it worked out for me. YMMV. If your stovetop PC is recent, it has as much safety stuff on it as a newly purchased electric PC. (Restating it somewhat differently, if you're worried about the stovetop PC, I don't see how an electric PC would engender fewer worries. But if your stovetop PC is an old antique jiggle top model, then you have some reason to be concerned.) Advantage of electric PC: timer function can be used to precisely start and stop the cooking. Disadvantage: it's a one trick pony, and takes up counter or cabinet space. Advantage of stovetop PC: the pot can be used for other things (i.e., the pot can be used as a regular pot, not as a pressure cooker). Disadvantage: you have to manually turn it off. Here's a off the wall suggestion that you might consider: if your current PC is induction capable, consider buying an induction hot plate. Using your PC on that would have all the timing functions of an electric PC. Lagostina in Canada sells induction capable pressure cookers. I believe that Sears Canada carries some.

My Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker is induction capable. It is a lovely a pressure cooker and I have used it for about 3years now. I started out with a Fagor that was very bad in maintaining the pressure and everything came out burnt.

I started out with an electric pressure cooker. It was a Russell Hobbs, and I thought it was fabulous. Until it died. After replacing it under warranty TWICE more, I decided that it wasn't ever going to be reliable and they gave me my money back and I bought the Kuhn Rikon. MUCH, MUCH better, you have a lot more options with a stovetop, like being able to quick cool in the sink if you want to, adjust your cooking time easily, etc. I've since read that many of the electric cookers are unreliable. If you need a big one, I'd go for the 10 quart Fagor or one of the restaurant sized Kuhn Rikons, if you want to spend the money. Both are induction capable. I use my K-R on my induction burner all the time, it's great.

I didn't find any Fagor Pressure Cookers bigger than 10 qt. Do you know if there is one? I liked the Kuhn Rikon until I got to the price! That won't work for me! I will investigate at Sears. I have time......or I'll buy the hot plate suggested by someone else on another thread. Darn! Really liked that Rikon.
Thanks so much for the info on the electric. I think I'll cross that off my list.
