Using Win 7, how can I protect kids on the net

I had posted some questions about laptops for my 9 year old...we have a desktop but she now wants a laptop. I can also see my 13 year old using it. Someone raised the issue of how it will be harder to supervise them when they are off thru the house and on the net. To be honest I never thought about this until recently.

Please tell me what Windows7 offers as some sort of security for prohibitting them access to certain things...kind of how I have the their tvs set to only allow age appropriate programming unless I unlock it...I have no idea where I would go to set this up on a laptop...ideas, suggestions...anything would be helpfull.....

I see things like netnanny but doesn't Windows itself come with somthing? Maybe Norton has something packaged with anti virus software I must also buy...reccomendations...?

You do not need to be above the tree to prune. You could have a branch that is 10' tall and cut it at 4'. You certainly wouldn't need to get on a ladder to make the 4' cut just because the branch is 10'. All the trees you mention except for the cherry, which you will probably kill doing what you want because they don't handle constant or heavy pruning well (and it sounds like you are going to cut a large central leader to make an open vase, which is why my old cherry tree split about 15 years after I had that idea), and the guava (which I just don't know about) fruit on last year's wood. Once you get your basic tree structure down your pruning will be replacing old branches when they get too big and heading back new branches to encourage fruiting and strength. You can bend the branches down to do the heading back and the branch replacement will be done at whatever level you decide your fruiting branches will come from. That level could be radiating from a central leader or it could be a system of scaffolds. I see a lot of overgrown "new wood" fruit trees and the reason is people didn't train them with the idea of branch replacement and to continue getting fruit they need to let the tree continue to get larger and larger. Let's say you decide your base will be cut at 4' and you will allow the trees to go no more than 10'. If the trees grow 12" a year or you head them back so they grow no more than 12" a year that means you will be replacing branches every 6 years. I don't know about zone 9 but 6 years is not a unmanageable branch. If it is you could decide to replace every 4 or 5 year branch and have an 8'-9' tree. If you are really stuck on having your trees only be 6' (which like I said above, there is no pruning reason to have to have them at head height to prune them since you will be removing well below the final height and can bend whips down to head them back) you would be cutting them off after every 2nd year. I'm not sure your trees would go for that, they may decide they don't have enough tree compared to root to bother trying to populate and growing tree is more important. I have a McIntosh that hates being espaliered to 5' and it's always trying to grow more tree instead of getting heavy with fruit. You may have to do some root pruning to make them satisfied with 6' of tree or do some other stress/extra dwarfing techniques to cause them to bear heavy so they don't have the energy to make more tree.

I was thinking just what Jerijen said, amazed that Knockout roses could be decimated by blackspot. MScaradine, are your Knockouts the original Knockout, or one of the varients bred from it? Second question is: You mentioned your tea roses doing well. Did you actually mean the old garden tea roses or hybrid teas? I have just heard so many people shorten hybrid tea to "tea" that I'm never sure. They are completely separate classes of roses. I wouldn't throw out the Knockouts without giving them a chance to recover, perhaps to next year. I had a Belinda's Dream rose that had significant blackspot when I bought it and for a few months afterwards, but after that it was highly resistant. Thanks, Rosetom, for your information about Banner Maxx. I did not know it is the same class as the tebuconazole. I used that before I ever started with the Bayer stuff, so I still have a supply of it. I have also used manzate occasionally, so I'll remember to give that a turn every so often. I don't much care for the filmy residue the Manzate leaves behind, but that's a minor annoyance and doesn't last long. Anyway, I have not been too diligent this year about spraying, but, knock on wood, so far the blackspot has been easily controlled, so the Bayer tebuconazole is still doing its job. Yea, Modern Miracle, indeed! I think Ingrid has a valid concern about the enivornmental impact. It is easier, though, to avoid blackspot in a drier climate. When you live in the Gulf South, blackspot is a major issue. There are certainly a handful of old garden roses highly resistant to it, but none are immune. Also, there are a lot of old garden roses that I see blackspot here as badly as modern roses. so you have to do your research carefully. I find (selfishly, perhaps) that certain colors and bloom form and size combinations are just simply not available in old garden rose varieties. I am encourage, however, with how much improvement we're seeing, in the overall disease resistance of some select modern varieties. My fingers are crossed that this trend will continue. In the meantime, if we're going to use chemicals in the garden, the labels that say CAUTION are supposed to be less dangerous than the ones that say either WARNING or DANGER. I do my gardening in a zone 5/6. I have to protect all of the Macrophyllas if I'm going to get any flowers. I would bet that you shouldn't have too much trouble over the actual winter months. These plants can take the extremes of cold that you should be expecting. The real problem for you ( and me, too, actually) is the fluctuations. It's Luis' "ker plunks" that end up getting us. Dirr has said that he sees better flowering in a place like Cape Cod than he sees in Georgia, even though Georgia is a much higher zone. That's because, at Cape Cod, you don't get the ker plunks. The ocean, the native habitat of these Macrophyllas, keeps the temperature moderate. No ker plunks. Being relatively close to the ocean might save you somewhat. At least in many years. You don't need to worry so much about doing something before the first frost unless it happens like tomorrow or something. As long as the weather follows a moderate path into the winter, you wouldn't have any problem at all. I don't do anything here until after the frosts come. The real problem for you, I would bet, is next Spring. That's when the damage is likely to happen. Typical for us people away from the moderating ocean, just like interior Georgia, is for a nice long spell of warm weather in Spring, fooling the plants into thinking that it's all over, with the buds opening up, only to get zapped with the ker plunk that follows. If you want to take your chances and do a minimal amount of work maybe you should consider not doing anything elaborate over the winter, but be ready to run out in the Spring when we get that night or two of cold and cover the plants with sheets of plastic and/or some other insulating material. Netting to protect from snakes?

I see some friends from years past and friends I've yet to meet! I have a nest of titmice and brown-headed nuthatches but the bluebirds are nesting across the street, I think. As for snakes, after what happened last July here, I do not trust ANY baffle! The one made of netting looks promising and if I get any birds after these first ones, I'll try it. If you didn't see my article in the Bayou (Louisana) Bluebird Society's newsletter about what happened here with 5 bluebird fledglings last July, their parents and a snake, check it out below. I don't trust much of any kind of deterrent for snakes after this. Right now, there have been NO takers for that nest box even though the snake never got on the box. A pair of bluebirds looked in quite a lot but never did go in (there's a nestbox video camera in there). There were titmice, nuthatches, chickadees all looking at it but no one took it!!! It's a mystery to me. Let's hope our bluebirds and other birds have a safe and productive season despite the challenges. Bluebird blessings, Linda... it is not only about protecting the kids but also your entire network because if their laptop is connected to your network which it likely will if you plan on using a wireless router some infections do spread through out networks. You will need very very good security programs on it to protect from infections. Putting sandbox on it would help. Locking domains through the router. Use a good Hosts list. Prohibiting all social networking sites period and check the history to see if they are going to them if so take the pc away.
The worst thing they can do is start to put pics of themselves on those sites then drop info that would let someone know where they live, mention of school, mall etc and then you get into some scary possibilities not to mention the pics posted can and definitely do end up stolen then posted on porn sites, it happens every single day, some perv has your childs picture.
As Zep said and I said in the other post get on google and read the info is available. But being watchful and making serious rules and sticking to them are essential.
Kids can find ways of getting around most of the programs you try to put on there to filter activity. Never ever give them access to the admin account or password and make that password extremely strong and not a real word.

andrelaplume2, always remember you are outnumbered by at least 100 to one. All school buddies know the answers about getting around parental controls - or where to get them so add that small item to your arsenal.

You can do it though, just be very diligent. Encourage conversations about the computer, nurture honesty and you may well have a winning formula.

Check out Open DNS. This is free and offers protection of sorts. Even though I am the only user on my network (desktop and laptop) I use this for lots of reasons. Read about it and give it a try.

I think the biggest, easiest and safest thing you can do, is to not let a child or young teen have a computer in their room, or allow them to use it 'in private'. Parents who allow such things are just asking for trouble. If children object, are they wanting to hide something that they can only do in private?

You might want to read some of the articles at the link below.

I'm wondering, do these children 'already' have cell phones with unlimited talk, texting, and maybe even the internet?

Do these children ever read books, or ever go the the library?

I set up some security on our desktop for her logon using tools I found from microsoft that came with Vista. It seams to prevent searches on bad words and prohibits viewing of certain you tube videos. Its a start I guess.

I just remembered that Kim Komando has a whole section on her site for parents. Here's a lot more info on keeping children safe including "10 Commandments for Kids on Line".
