I have Norton now, the fellow who works on my computer said to download AVAST the free home edition.

I tried and for what ever reason I cannot insert the key.

What do I need to do or undo? Thank you for your help and suggestions.

I will be happy to post any info you may need. I am in no way a computer whiz, I am on step 3.

I don't use Avast or know what step 3 is but here is a advast on-line tutorial

If it's something like pasting in the key, try Ctrl + V

I tried and tried to get avast registered, and never could. I'm thinking the 'free' version was going to run out at midnight if I didn't get it registered.

I ended up getting AVG Free instead and like it quite well.

If I remember correctly, it was nearly impossible to get Avast uninstalled and removed....might have gotten rid of it totally when I reformatted...not sure.

I have a 19 year old tabby who is suffering from CRF, which I really consider old age more than I consider it to be kidney failure. He is off the charts when it comes to longevity. The vet just gave me some RenAvast. My vet used to work with the Humane Society and he has been my cat's vet for 19 years. I'm going to trust him on this, but I'll update everyone in about a week or two to tell you if there is any difference. I understand people being cynical about something like this, but I figure if my vet of 19 years gave me this there must be something to it. I wanted to post my story for everyone because I don't want people to be too cynical about something that might help your kitty. Maybe it will work, maybe not. But in my case, it did come from a trusted source so there must be something to this.

Not on windows 8.1. Defender on windows 8.1 is basically Microsoft Security Essentials, if you were to install avast Defender I think is automatically disabled.

If you've checked the things that could have an indirect effect by choking resources - ie, you don't have too many windows open at the same time, you've cleared cache and history in the browser, your hard drive isn't near capacity and has been recently cleaned up and defragged, then you may be stuck. An old version installation of something like an antivirus program is likely to be auto-updated with the periodic check for threat profiles, which should happen no less than weekly. Meaning, you're fighting a losing battle. The old version will likely get replaced with the first update. If you can't find happiness with Avast, it may be time for you to try a different security program. A recent thread in this forum had a link to an article containing independent ratings. Good luck.

Don't have Avast any more either - but there is a spot where you insert the key. Try Help and About, not sure anymore. I always cursed that they made it so hard to register the thing.

I got to that spot, and then it would not take/accept the key they had given me to use. I finally just had to give up since it was expiring, and I didn't want to be left without protection.

I recently loaded AVAST on two laptops xp and vista and it worked fine.
