Eichler Custom or Southwestern Semi-Custom? (money is an object)
Comments (7)Hi Mayberry, Maybe you could do something with a central courtyard/atrium area? It isn't too hard to design something yourself with the really nice software programs available these days. I spent a lot of time thinking through the layout and flow of the house, and drawing up various versions til DH and i were both happy before we bid it out.. If you can do this part, you have saved the architect a tremendous amount of time since so much time is spent listening and interpreting what the clients want, then doing changes when the clients change their minds. The architect we hired had a lag in business, so he actually was less expensive than some building designers. He helped us draw up the plans to code and coordinated with the mechanical and civil engineers to draw their portions to get the plans through the city approval process. The city did ask us for a few modifications which the architect took care of. The architect also makes himself available on a per hour basis should we need to consult him during the construction. So far, we have consulted him only once for a couple of hours to clarify some items, which he didn't charge us for. We still aren't finished building yet, hopefully this summer.. Comments (16)Either B or C...we're not the cheapest house in the neighborhood but there are some that are significantly larger/more extravagant/ pricier than ours. The neighborhood began development about 20 years ago. The original builder is completing the development. We actually chose the neighborhood before we decided to build. We chose it for the school system (best in the city), location (very close commute to work, shopping, highway, etc), and the overall feel. When we walked around while shopping for houses, other people stopped us to introduce themselves and tell us how much they liked their house, neighborhood, and the builder. We also ran into about 7 different acquaintances that all lived there! We looked at another development that is newer but the houses all backed up to each other so the backyards were not private. That was a deal breaker for us. We couldn't find a house in our price range to buy in our chosen neighborhood, so we bought the last lot and are currently builder. So far, relatively smooth sailing....See MoreIf money were no object -- what type/brand bedding would you get?
Comments (23)omg, Igloo, if I slept under a $14,000 sheet I'd never want to get out of bed! wow. Well, here's what I ended up getting. I ordered a set of Sferra sheets which were on sale at Horchow plus they had 20% off everything yesterday. Then I ordered a matelasse coverlet and shams from Pine Cone Hill. Everything in ivory. Finally I ordered a floral duvet cover from Pottery Barn -- not exactly high end but I loved the fabric colors, and I'm finding that the color of my walls is hard to match. I'm hoping the duvet works... if not, I can return it. I'm trying to copy those beds that have the matelasse coverlets with the duvet folded near the foot of the bed. Oh, I also got the shams that match the duvet as well. And tomorrow I'm buying a new mattress! You won't hear from me again because I'll be in bed all day......See MoreAnother 'money no object' question: fiberglass vs gunite
Comments (2)With a lifetime career of constructing pools I can assure you of the following "Every pool is a great pool!!!" From the cheapest cheesiest Walmart inflatable to a poured Redimix concrete Olympic sized pool that they're all equal. Those who are in charge of them share an equal responsibility in maintaining proper water chemistry for the swimmers and staying on top of the preventative maintenance necessary to keep the pool circulatory system in proper working order. The only thing one owner enjoys over the other is a lifetime pool platform and more elbow room. I've built everything from aboveground pools, vinyl liner, fiberglass, to concrete pools. I can tell you this for fact "An inground concrete pool is a permanent swim platform when constructed properly" IMO, go with the gunite pool. I'm not going to knock a fiberglass pool, but when I dig up an old one and build a new gunite pool I wonder where their mindset was 10 or 15 years ago when they opted not to use concrete construction. I've remodeled concrete pools that have predated World War II, and removed and replaced vinyl liner and fiberglass pools that were shot within twenty. If the concrete (gunite) pool builder ahas been in the game as long as your potential builder has, GO FOR IT!!! I'd spend the extra money without any hesitation or reservations whatsoever. See ya, Kelly....See Morewanderindiana
