Help Me Choose A Subzero Unit - Need To Decide Tonight!

I have been looking for two bottom freezer units (right and left hinged as a pair) and have narrowed it down to the following:

736TCI: Two floor models are available, manufactured 7/12 and 3/13 respectively. This is for two 36" units. Price is $12,400 with delivery included.

700TCI: Two display models are available, manufactured 2/11 and 1/10 respectively. This is for two 27 inch units. Price is $9500, with delivery included. No factory warranty, but they will include a 5 year after market warranty.

Brand New Model IT30CI: Two new models, with ice makers and no water dispensers. This is for two 30" units. Price is $14,000 with delivery included. Full factory warranty.

My preference is the new model, but my husband is not liking the idea of spending this much on a refrigerator. I am wondering if the new model is enough better to justify the cost difference? Can anyone chime in? We have a large family, so can use the extra space in the larger units, but even the smallest one has more space than our current refrigerator. Please help me decide.

no, on the 736 - it's too wide for your armoire design.

no, on the 700 as $4250 for a 3 year old fridge with no warranty is not a good value !

BTW - why do these not have a warranty? Is this not an authorized dealer ?

This leaves the 30CI. The price you quoted is actually less than retail , so with tax and delivery they are a good deal.

In terms of "deals" the first two are not. You're being quoted close to full retail on units that are 1-4 years old.

Let me spell out the economics your hubby can wrap his head around. "would you rather have this (pointing) USED, expensive, fridge, car , television, set of golf clubs, ect...

- or -

for only 12% more money , get this (pointing) BRAND NEW, fridge, car tv, ect.... along with a FULL WARRANTY ? "

$1600 bucks is short money on a six figure+ remodel or house.

I realize this may be a little late, but thought I would throw in my two cents. I currently have a 20 year old Subzero 590 that has been flawless in its operation. It was 3K at the time, which was a lot of money, but other than one slight problem with the icemaker early on, it has never required service. I considered re-using it in my remodel, but in the end, our new configuration requires the use of separate units. That being said, I was not about to pay the going rate at our local authorized dealer. I started to search ebay and purchased a BI36 all frig and a 27" 700TFI all freezer, both panel ready. I did not want or need a 36" freezer and they are in different spaces in the kitchen. Both were 4K each including shipping and no tax. I checked the serial numbers with Subzero before I purchased each of them, as they were from different sellers, just to make sure I had full warranty. I had the luxury of time on my side, so I was able to take my time and wait until I found the units I was looking for at the price I was willing to pay. BTW, I also found my Capital rangetop the same way. Paid $2999 for a 48" culinarian with grill. Brand new in box.

It's a good point about relative number of units sold as compared to number of complaints, and we have thought about that. I have an emotional aversion to Subzero because we are replacing a Sub that has had nothing but problems - among other things, the fridge compressor has broken twice, and then most recently the solenoid valve for the icemaker failed somehow and allowed the unit to flood, freeze completely, and overflow out into the kitchen (which of course happened when we were on vacation so that the flood went through the kitchen floor and flooded the basement also, but I digress....). I didn't realize that Liebherr had sold in the US before and then pulled out, but my understanding is that they have had a good reliability record with their refrigerators in Europe. One of the things making us lean more towards the Liebherr is how new and relatively untested the Thermadors are. My main concern about the Liebherr is the freezer space, but we do have an extra freezer so it shouldn't be a huge issue. My local appliance dealer sells every brand imaginable and services them all themselves. They recommend the Subzero and the Liebherr most highly.

Joining the party a bit late - but going through the same issues on our kitchen redesign. Should be easy as I am only dealing with cooking. After a month of reading reviews and playing with ovens and cooktops, I think I decided on the following: Wolf e series oven (was very close to the elux icon as I loved the racks). Final decision - size of the oven, 2 convection fans and on sale! Wolf 36 inch induction cooktop - Ann Arbor building inspectors are following the make up air handling very strictly and need to keep the vent under 400cfm or would have to add a make up air system - which outweighed the benefits. Also considered the miele, thermador, and a late addition - JennAire - but the sleek look of the Wolf won plus it is on sale. GE Advantium Monogram speed oven - This will be over the Wolf oven and I think it will look OK - similar handles and overall appearance. Also considered the Miele and Elux. I have a newer Elux French door fridge and love it - it has the LED lighting.(but no ice/water through the door) It cost a bit more than some others but it has saved me $$ in less wasted food. When I headed out of town for 2 weeks urgently and returned with the milk and lettuce still usable - need I say more? Also, I took my favorite serving dishes and tested the various units -the elux was set up best. I also have a Miele dishwasher. It is several years old and I will re-use it. It is so quiet that I have to put my ear near to verify it is running. The door pops open to assist in drying at the end of the cycle. I also took my favorite dishes to try in the dishwasher - I can put 14 place settings in the dishwasher and run my china and crystal in the dishwasher! Hope I made the right decisions on the new appliances - the posts have been helpful!

The latest issue, the backsplash. Can it stay? I received a sample of the door and drawer fronts in the style and color I ended up ordering, and I had the paint color and sheen matched so that I can start painting the old maple boxes to accommodate the replacement door and drawer fronts. (As you know, the new wall unit will be ordered prepainted from the factory.) Anyhow, the new issue is whether the backsplash can stay. I have to fix a few grout areas that cracked and replace two tiles, but I'm inclined to keep it. It's the carrara-like subway 2"x4" tiles from Lowes, which are not expensive ($10 per square foot), but the labor will be more than I want to spend. Let me know if you think it has to go. I've included below pictures of the peninsula boxes, which I've painted already and the new door as well as pictures of the door with the backsplash and counter so that you can see the contrast. Keep in mind that my wall color will be Benjamin Moore Mount Saint Ann in Aura's kitchen/bath paint (a special scrubbable, moisture and mildew resistant matte paint)--the same paint I used in my bathroom above: Also keep in mind that I'm replacing the range with a Dacor Dr30DNG, which I just bought, and likely replacing the over the range microwave/vent with a standard pro style hood like this: Here are the new paint/cabinet photos:

The Goodman models listed basically come down to features and functions you want in terms of better comfort for the structure. The 14 SEER model is single stage either on or off for both heating and air conditioning functions. The Goodman 16 SEER model is 2 stage for both heat and air conditioning. If you decide on the Goodman 16 SEER option, it is much better in controlling humidity and providing better overall comfort. However, it must be controlled properly it needs a 2 stage thermostat for both heating and air conditioning. Then you need to make sure it is wired properly this may include running new thermostat wire. Neither of the Goodman units are micro channel. The Rheem unit has micro channel coils (evaporator and condenser coil) Because this is a package unit it's no big deal on installation of the unit, but when repairs are needed it can complicate things. Micro channel benefit is that less refrigerant is needed. However, these are critically charged units which means if the unit loses a few ounces of refrigerant it will not work properly. Micro channel units can not be pumped down to service unit. Refrigerant must be reclaimed to work on refrigeration circuit. So the costs to service a micro channel designed unit leaves little to be desired as the unit ages. Because micro channel coils are critically charged it would be pointless to attempt to recharge a system temporarily until parts can be found to make repairs or in most cases replace the leaking micro channel coil. This doesn't mean the Goodman units can't leak refrigerant, just that they can be recharged temporarily until repair parts can be obtained like over a holiday weekend or something like that. Micro channel has been around a while now, but early on they were prone to developing refrigerant leaks and still are as far as I know. For those reasons out of the choices shown I would choose Either of the Goodman units. But only the 16 SEER model if it's properly wired with a 2 stage heat and 2 stage cool thermostat. The devil in any HVAC system, is in the finer details. Micro channel mostly benefits the manufacturer, as this design cuts manufacturing cost not only in material costs but also refrigerant costs. Ok, I've now found two of the 700TCI units for a combined price of $7000, delivered. Display models, from 2010. This is half the price of the new model 30 inch units. One comes with manufacturer's warranty and the other unit, I'm not sure. Does this change your mind, Xedos? It's hard to justify twice the price for an extra 6" of refrigerator space and a newer model.

Wilson, thanks for the info. Yes, some of these units I have found on eBay. The others from a local person who sells display models. It's good to hear that this worked out for you. I have heard mixed reviews on the 700 series. Hopefully if I purchase these they will last as long as your 500 series unit.
