Sound on a laptop

HP Dv6, - Suddenly on videos the volume is very soft. It is not low on something like dealing a deck of cards on a game. I ran the test and it says it is working properly. Any suggestions.

One thing can help is the following. Right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select 'Playback Devices'. Left click the default device once to highlight it ( it's usually 'speakers & headphones' ) then click the Properties button. Click the Enhancements tab and put a tick in the box next to 'Loudness Equalization'. Click Apply to save the change and then click OK in all remaining windows and see if this has helped at all.

If the videos are on Youtube check to see their volume control. There was a spell where the sound was off on some videos for whatever reason.

Kudzu9--I didn't see your suggestion before my last post. I just tested that and it's just another way to change the volume. If I set it all the way down using the Fn-F11, then look in control panel, the volume slider is all the way to the left. I haven't tried any headphones, but they're basically just another variation of an unpowered speaker, so my expectation is that they'd be pretty much inaudible. Since she wants to use the laptop to play audio books while in several rooms, headphones wouldn't be useful to her anyway.

Thanks for the responses ! For some reason the problem is not present today. Or I should say "problems." The two issues (the clicking sound when depressing a key and the inability to press the same key twice without pausing for a couple seconds) both resolved themselves (proving at least that they must have been related). grandms, It's an HP laptop, so the keyboard is integrated. It was not listed as a separate device in the Printers and Other Hardware section. And the Device Manager (which I also checked) didn't have anything of import either. :-( genes, Yes, she already has that, as well as Avira AV and SAS. I will be running those scans for her soon. I only asked my question before doing so in case anyone might have known of this issue and knew it to have some other obvious cause. Well, for now it's a mystery. But if my scans find anything I'll post an update, just for information's sake. Thanks again !

I'd probably start by running control panels Troubleshoot / Audio. Maybe mentally note the time it happens and later on look in the Reliability History to see if any notes of errors. Probably visit Toshiba Support for my model and maybe download and reinstall the Audio driver... maybe visit their forums and search or look for other Toshiba users with same problem. But it sounds like a loose wire. ... What browser do you use.. it could be some kind of internet cache corruption. Assuming this happens playing web stuff audio's. Maybe try CCleaner ? .. If only happening in say Media Player you could uninstall it in Programs/Windows features and restart and re-install it. What source does this happen ? See the little volume slider to the right of the speaker icon on the youtube player ... can you slide it to the right ? You might need to delete all your cookies which remembers that speaker setting - or update your flash player.

Zep, I followed your directions so I will test it.
Also in the past on any video, Utube etc I had the option of turning the volume up. Now all I get it icon - if I click on it the only offer is "mute".

It's the only option I get too, to the right of the speaker icon is a slider, using the mouse, you can drag it all the way over to the right for increased volume. That's how it works for me.
