Vista User Manual

Is there such a thing? Does Microsoft have a "user manual" for Windows Vista that is browseable from the Net?

My parents' newly purchased laptop has Vista Premium. When they ask me questions, I would like to refer to such a manual. They are not very computer knowledgeable and live out of state. I spent two hours on the phone trying to connect the charger/adapter, power on the PC and boot the PC. I then had take a break. We left the PC on because they could not find a way to turn off the PC; it appears to be different from the way XP does. It is so hard to see what is happening when the PC is not right beside me. Phoce calls get expen$ive too.

PCAnywhere is coming as a Xmas gift but until then, a manual for me would be nice since I always get stuck with the PC questions.

You might try go.live.com/messenger on each end. Its free!

I have used it a few times in the past to take over others computers and fix em.

How to turn Vista off.

The arrow on the right is for restart or shutdown.

El, Sorry, I tried and had no luck. Sometimes trial and error learning works as long as you take notes. Use the MC-12 Plus manual as a reference for trial and error attempts. It is online. Otherwise buy a new controller. Do you need twelve zones and a commercial type controller? Check with your local Irritrol rep. GL aloha

You have to dedicate some time to playing with the machine just to find where things are. My new HP computer has its own Help Center with a "What's New in Vista?" guide.

We have a drawer we call the owners manual drawer---All in one place--so encase of fire we can grab the drawer on the way out---sometime down the road want to put all--info on disks to be stored away from home (ie sisters house)-- I work retail and I reccommend to all the folks who come in not knowing what brand say of weedeater they have to look in their owners manual drawer for the information they need---I always get that blank eyed look like what am I talking about--- Reccommend that all receipts be scanned and printed and stapled to front of owners manual (because the thermal imaging fades quickly)

Usually the laptops will by default shut down by pressing the same power switch that turns it on.

Luis,

Perhaps to take a little bit of a load of you, you might ask your parents to review areas of the Vista Help at their leisure. They would undoubtedly be more comfortable reading it when they don't have a concern rather than when they do. They could do it at their convenience, their own speed and focus on what they wanted. They would be able to take notes and ask questions in a more comfortable environment.

Access to the Help is just above the two red arrows Randy presented. It's called Help and Support

mikie, thanks for the info. I will try golive.com later but not now. They have not restarted Internet service yet so I cannot see anything on their PC.

Randy, thanks for the image. I will describe that for them. They should be able to recognize the buttons this way.

mikie, I thought about doing that but was not sure if they would loose something on the buffers. They had some applications started when this was going on and I was afraid of loosing data.

damccoy, you have no idea how many times during "the" phone call I wanted to do that but, they are not computer literate people. I would have to teach me how to use Help first and loose another hour on the phone. I am not even sure if they have used Help before or if they would remember. I will ask since it cannot hurt, can it? Hee hee hee.

Luckily, they are aware how much helpful I could be if they had DSL/Cable Internet Service so they are going to check prices for that.
