file missing - iecont.dll

HI Everybody,

Our computer is still not letting us back on the internet. I saw that we have two files missing; iecont.dll and iecontlt.dll. It also said that ieuinit.inf is not available.

Does this have to do with us not being able to get on the internet? The connection is good, using it right now on the laptop.

Does this computer have antivirus and antimalware protection on it? I googled iecont.dll and it is either needing to have .Net Framework installed via Windows Updates or a possible virus. When you attempt to connect, is there an error or do you just get 'Page Cannot be Displayed in Internet Explorer?

what windows are you using xp or vista and if xp did you update to sp3?
Have you by any chance recently used any type of registry cleaner?

yes apt get is still around but most people want a gui based way and not learn command line. And the fact that some of the distros are altered versions specially created for use on these little netbooks makes it more difficult to help because the altered distro may not be the same as the full distro etc. Using synaptic is a breeze, you just open the synaptic package manager which would be listed in your applications menu and then when it ask for root type that in and it opens synaptic just like in that picture then you can either search for the name of the item you want or go through the list looking for it, once you do find it, say you are looking for firefox, do search for firefox, it finds it and you see it listed in the list hilight it and select mark then apply and it will tell you that it will be installing that to your pc you click ok and it does it's thing and then says it completed successfully and you close that window and voila you now have firefox on your pc. That is how you install any type of program to linux. You do not do like you did in windows and search the web and find some program that you have no idea if it is safe or not and download an exe to your pc which you then execute and hope that it is not virus laden. The programs are already all loaded into the repository and have been checked so you know they are clean and safe, you find them using synaptic or some package manager and install them. It is so much easier than the windows way. You just have to unlearn windows. Windows to Linux: A Beginner's Guide that is a must have site, there are many others that I relied on heavily when I started but by far the best thing is to find a good related forum for your version and sign up. It really is not that steep a learning curve just like going to a Mac you have to learn a new os same with linux, once you learn it you realize it makes much more sense. does that asus eee use Gnome or KDE desktop? In a way this is funny.. guess who wrote that post but then I couldn't find it..I figured they didn't put it on as I tried to put in the urls but they didn't work..I did try ignore before but it wouldn't let me..after several tries just now it did. I am still having problem with it saying I'm not connected to the INTERNET..I'll try to work through that somehow. A couple of years ago my son worked with them some on the skins. He may have been as much a problem as help.. who know. They were good to him & kind. They did use several of his ideas. They have gone beyond his knowledge now. Before this version his name was also in the credits for the skins. Maybe tomorrow my son can help me now..(also maybe not) I believe he was the one who figured out IE8 was part of the problem with updates..at least one of them :) He lives in VA so isn't here to help me physically. Sometime certain Microsoft Libraries can become unregistered when installing and uninstalling a lot of software. One very common problem is the MSCOMCTL.OCX. To correct the error, first search your drive for MSCOMCTL.OCX to see if you have it. If not you can download it from the link given The file should be placed in your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. Or, if you are C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 if you are using WinXP. Once it is there click START--> RUN and type REGSVR32 MSCOMCTL.OCX in the box hit ok That should fix the problem. boop--a fellow Dr. Who fan! Who knew? ;) I'm glad my post found an understanding soul :) Hm, the new Dr. is a topic of much discussion at our house. We love David Tennant inordinately -- did you see his Hamlet? At least twice or three times an episode we find ourselves screaming at Matt Smith, "lift your head up!" I can understand why they cast him physically--he's the complete opposite facially of the birdlike Mr. Tennant--his features are broad and soft...but the hair, man. It's a big problem. And the head down thing just bugs us so much. The writing is by a different person this season, too. The Doctor makes mistakes, loses his cool; actually, his companion (Amy Pond, whom I like but not everyone does) ends up coming up with the solution to the problem more often than not. He's fallible!! I remember back in some of the very first Dr. Who episodes we watched online, the Doctor was tetchy and short tempered--a different character altogether from David T. This Doctor seems to fit into that kind of lineage--he's much more isolated and sad, IMO -- less of the ecstatic 'be magnificent' inspirational talk that David T. used to do, iykwim - it comes up every so often, but not the same way. And the way Matt talks even bugs me -- it's like he talks with the front of his lips and you hear every little 'p' or 'b' he makes. yuck. Do you know what I mean? What do you think of him? All that said, I have to admit that he did a superb job on the VanGogh episode, possibly better than DT could have, because of that tendency toward introspection. I'd love to know what you think of this episode. Some folks thought it was saccharine; I didn't. I thought it earned all its bittersweetness honestly. I haven't been able to bring myself to watch Torchwood yet at all. Definitely not w/DD, from what I've read of it. Yes?

Add to raven's question about the operating system -- a couple of results that I saw showed that Windows 2000 Pro involved the two files.

I also wonder do you have a firewall and have you tried dropping your firewall and trying to get your pc to connect, it could be something changed in your settings and your firewall is blocking something.

Also have you done all your windows updates for your pc? the references I have seen to the dll files you mentioned are all very very old and seem to have been fixed by windows updates, also most were involving Ie6 which version of IE do you have?

The reason I ask about sp3 is that it has been found that people who did the sp3 update are now unable to get their updates to .net. There have been some work arounds for that issue. Article about that for anyone interested.

and yet another question have you done all your java updates on that pc? and do you also have firefox browser?

from what I have read those missing dll files should not be keeping you from connecting, they seem to be related to being able to click on links in webpages and having it take you to the appropriate pages.
So I think you have 2 different problems, one the connect issue and 2 the dll problem.

go to your event viewer Start> control panel> administrative tools> event viewer > there you will see 3 options in the left list double click each to open their logs look in each one to see if you have any red or yellow flags there, if you do you can hilight each one of those by clicking it then double click to open the info box on each item, look for any thing that says what is happening and what is causing it and any error codes.

Hi guys, thsnks for your replies. Feeling a bit down this morning, I don't really understand what I'm trying to do even though you are all so helpful.
So here's the answers to some of the questions:

Internet Explorer says :Page cannot be displayed
We have always used AVG as antivirus and I have always updated this. (we had the dodgy download as well couple of weeks ago but i fixed that with the fix tool AVG provided)
We did not have the firewall on, I did not even know we had it. Anyway, i found it and now we will use it.
I don't know what antimalware is, I thought AVG was enough.

I have looked in the event viewer but that only shows events till march 2007? Plenty error codes there.

Ok so I'm probably making you shake your heads, I'm way out of my league here and I know it. But he who tries might get somewhere right?

See if you can do this exercise below let us know:

Click Start/ click Programs/ click Accessories/ click System Tools/ click System Restore. (Click the Restore My Computer to an earlier time.)

Then:

Try to connect to the internet when the computer finishes restoring, try to go here first (WWW.GOOGLE.COM) Type it into the address bar.

Hi Zep516, we've tried to do the system restore but it just doesn't do the last step so we haven't been able to do it.
I think we will go back to the shop because it seems we are really at a dead end. Apart from not being able to access the internet, I also can't burn my photo's to a disc anymore because it says there is no disc drive connected. More problems!!! Aaargh. When I ran the AVG in the safe mode it did pick up a trojan horse, could that be causing this?

"We use XP and I don't know if we updated to sp3?" On the Windows screen at an open place in the bar at the bottom, right click. Select Task Manager, then Help at the top of the dialog box, then select About Task Manager. On the second line it should show the Service Pack (mine is 2) that is installed. If you have SP3 installed there were/are many problems associated with it. Getting rid of it may be another story.

A Trojan horse could cause a # of issues and there may be more infected files AVG isn't seeing + you appear to have missing dll files and windows isn't seeing the disc drive and a restore problem and you can't connect, so every stick you grab is the crappy end, there may be other issues we don't even see yet...

Not being able to connect and at least run malware scans is a problem.

Taking it back to shop is probably the best solution, please let us know the results..

Thank you! We do not have SP3 but the service pack 2 as you do. But yeah, we are in over our head here with zep516 describing it well!! Haha, back to the shop it is I think..
I'll let you know what the outcome is. Thanks for your help!
