Thanks to all who have helped with advice and information!

I am finally able to have a little time to post pics! We finished our project as owner/builders doing A LOT of the work ourselves! I would never start over again but we learned so much through the process. Would be glad to help others in any way I can! Thanks again! Hope you enjoy the pics!

The inside is simply lovely! Congratulations- you all did a great job. My favorite pic is of your cat enjoying the tree...I love tuxedo cats!!

Your home is just stunning! I love it! Your kitchen is beautiful. I love the copper sink, faucets, etc. Great taste! Even your cat is perfect! LOL!

Thanks for your kind comments! Trish... I am so sorry that Sandy affected you and your home in such a major way. I hope that things are going as smoothly as possible as you try to put things back together. To deal with all of that with a busy two year old must be especially challenging. I absolutely love my tile and its warm somewhat rustic appearance so I'm glad that you like it too. I did some checking for you and have some info which I hope will be helpful. I sourced my tile from my local Virginia Tile store in Michigan. They would ship to NY but that would be hugely expensive, of course. I googled Edimax distributors in NY and came up with a couple who told me that they don't carry Material Forte and Westchester Tile in Scarsdale which told me that the Materia Forte was being discontinued(!) I quickly called my Virginia Tile rep who had not heard anything about that and was still expecting shipments within the next month. Checking further, I found the AllStone Boston Design Center that carries Edimax tile. The good news is they ship from a warehouse in New Jersey so that might be reasonable to consider. I spoke with Lauren Maggio who was very helpful and suggested that you contact her (lauren@allstone.net) with details about the sizes and quantity that you'd be interested in and that she could order a tile sample for you. Their phone number is 617-737-2200. Depending on the size tiles that you're considering, I wouldn't be too hesitant to order tile in this way. We found that, by doing the usual mixing of boxes, we were happy with all of the large tiles and how they blended together. The 4 x 4's were a different story however because they had much more variation in tones and because they were a tumbled tile with uneven edges... some of them were very, very uneven. We ordered way more than we needed and picked out the best ones to use. I hope that helps... please feel free to let me know if you have any other questions that I might be able to answer. Thanks all! weedpuller: the compost bucket is huge - 15L or about 3 gallons. I don't let it get too full though because it gets heavy (not to mention smelly, though only noticeable when the door is open) and I worry about the weight. It is from Rev A Shelf, see link localeater: I love the compost bucket. We compost everything, no garbage disposal in our house. It is under the prep sink on the island and I scrap into the sink then gather it up to throw in the bucket. Easy. The bucket pulls out to be carried out to our bin. Also, the broom closet is 2' wide, 3' deep and 6' tall and functions beautifully (especially after not having one for so long!). The chair is from PB Teen, Vintage Wood Swivel. Well constructed and comfy, as well as (I agree, if I do say so myself) a perfect fit for the space! Beth: Thanks!! It's Baker and we're not going anywhere anytime soon ;) We did all this work on an old house we love because we hope to be here forever! :) And yes, our pup loves it too! kelhuck: That is just what I love to do in the space, time and kids allowing! Thanks for letting me know those are Flor tiles, Sue! Even better! They would likely work better than the rug I have in my kitchen because the ends of the rug are bulky and get in the way of the trash compactor opening. I have been having a hard time finding the right long rug for the hallway that will run from our front door to the mudroom, too. I will have to keep an eye out for good deals on flor tiles while we do that part of our remodel. I have been really enjoying the home decor forum here now that our kitchen is mostly done, and we will be starting on the rest of the house this spring. We just got cafe curtains hung in the kitchen and dining room today, so it was nice to see your curtains, too. Just enough for privacy, but still lets the light in...

Our DS had a Husky. Hope you have a chain link fence that's buried a foot into the ground. From our experience Huskies like to roam and will dig to do it! "Dakota" was a very intelligent fellow and adored our DS. He was also adept at catching and killing birds, rabbits, possums, etc. as 'presents'. He was an indoor/outdoor dog. He loved outdoors. I loved him outdoors too; indoors at DS's house was awash in dog hair! It's good you have another dog. Huskies like to be part of a 'pack'.

There are so many wonderful touches in your home, congratulations! I love the exterior and the interior, but that beautiful view blows everything away. Lucky you! We have what seems like very similar wrought iron stair ballusters. Great taste;-) Enjoy your new home, it's just lovely.

Wow! That is just gorgeous! I love the staircase and your kitchen is to die for! Have you been in a whole year and you're just now posting pictures? 30 lashes with a wet noodle! LOL!

Christine, your new home is absolutely beautiful and I love the style. May I ask for some information regarding paint and mantel? Can you tell me the paint color/brand in the living area and the width measurement on your mantel? We are building a mantel and trying to get an idea on how wide we need to build it. Thanks so much.

Thank you for the kind responses! Yes it has been nearly a year, but since we did the owner/builder and I was the GC and
onsite "task master with whip", it has taken me that long to recover! We rented a trailer from our neighbor and while my DH was at work 12 hours a day (someone had to earn the money to pay the subs) my disabled son (19 yrs old) and myself all 5'5" 120 pounds of me ran the crew for building our home and my Mom's. Like I said, I am still recovering! It is by the grace of God that I am alive at all. Now isn't that an encouragement to be an owner/builder! I am looking up my paint colors and the fireplace information and will post tommorrow! Thanks again!

Your house is beautiful. I was looking at your photos and saw the persimmon grove and I was thinking that mountain looks like my mountain. My house is across the valley on the other side of Lake Skinner and we were at Wilson Creek last night. Small world. I love everything you've done. Congratulations.

It seems to me that a home this style could easily become cold or uninviting or, at the very least, provide for some very interesting design hurdles. You've done quite well with it. You've maintained that stately feeling of a home that should last through the 22nd century, while making it cozy enough to settle into.

I'm not bright enough to express the impression I get from your home well, so please just except this as another "nice house".

WOW.... So diferent from stuff up here in connecticut, but I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!! WOW I love just about everything but especially the exterior! Tell me about the house, how many sq ft? Did you desighn it yourself? Your house is one of those that you never considered than see and say wow maybe I sould have done something like that! Is this your first build?

Thank you for the comments. My hubby did all the columns cabinets and the fireplace in the living room! The mantel is
Foster mantel unfinished dental molding style 60" from Lowes(a regular in stock item here is so.Calif),
the pilaster sides are also from the same company with the routing all ready done. The rest of the detail and the face wood (below mantel) are pieces of finish grade pine unfinished that hubby bought and cut to complete the detail. DH suggested that you take the pics to Lowes and ask them to match up the trims and detail pieces for you. We don't have the names of them. I took some more pics and will post them for you to see more detail. The living room walls are Sherwin Williams Barley. The fireplace was painted in Killz primer from either home depot or Lowes. The finish color of fireplace and all moldings and cabinets (white) and trim is Sherman Williams too. Let me know if you need any other info! Here are the detail pics

Thank you for the comments! I am updating the pics because I have gotten a ton of emails asking for more details. It is 4887 square feet. The exterior is an updated Southern Georgian colonial plantation style. We did design it ourselves but we looked at literally thousands of historical and new home plans and combined all the things we wanted in a home and then we took our designs to an architect. We are in our late 40's and have spent about 30 years studying houses, architectural history and landscaping (we love to garden and design landscape too) but all this is just a hobby. We are business owners (sportswear co.) Yes it is our first build from dirt up! We have done remodeling and semi-custom tract homes before. I would be happy to give you any other information you would like. Thanks for the compliments!

Christine, it a wonderful home !!! Beautiful... I think we have seen your house in person... Are you in a gated community? Our friends bought the property about 2 years ago... and we visited them last summer. I remember a house that looked just like yours next to their property...but their address was in Murietta...
Anyway, gorgeous home !!!! Congratulations !!!
