I would run Superantispyware ASAP.

get and run superantispyware as bpgreen has said, you need to get this free program and run it also, run both! be sure to update each prior to running.
then go and do the online scan I give you a link to.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

I'm somewhat mystified as to how all this junk got into my system as I have Superantispyware installed on that machine,
plus the free version of Avast.

BTW, I'm on my laptop at the moment as I took the desktop off line until I can get some of this stuff done. I have not been able to open IE today. Perhaps after getting rid of the 55 items that SuperAntipsyware found, I'll try again.

After cleaning these items off, I get a Spybot message Notifying me "Browser Help Object Value deleted
(715e1594-44ce-4e36-9494-8bfad137375)

Should I accept this change or deny it as I have previous ones during this siege.

well if it says deleted I would say that would be a good thing. But I no longer use spybot.

go get the malwarebytes and do it right away that is the one that will really get you back on track.

the online scan must be done using IE.

you said you had superantispyware on the machine are you updating it weekly and running a full scan? Also I would get this free program which just sits quitely in the back ground and helps keep the bad stuff away, called sypwareblaster you just go hit the update button then the enable all protection button on it once a week thats all.

No wonder my computer was running slower.

I started a scan with FREE Online Virus Scan and it scanned over 25,000 files and stopped. I watched it for over 25 minutes and it did not change at all. However, at that time, it was reporting all was clean.

I need to update Spyware blaster, also.

However, all appears to functioning properly now.

Are there more steps to take?

It's almost getting to be fun to surf again.;-)

I would check your java version and make sure it is updated, running old versions of java is an infection risk and may have led to the Vundo infection, download the program in the link below and run it, The site I'm sending you to is Majorgeeks, click on the american flag at the top of the page to download the program, don't download anything else.

FYI:

Java versions if your interisted can be seen in the add/remove programs lits you should have only 1, I would check in there then run the program and check it again java is currently running at 6 update 10 (java run time enviroment)

actually since you have vundo I would prefer if you came over to another forum and lets have you run some other scans and the team there will help you with that, you likely have some hidden stuff that will need to be cleaned out using special programs.

even though your pc seems better you do have some stuff still causing problems so come on over there and we will help you there to complete the clean up. They will have you do the java updates there so you can wait.
