Keyboard question

I just bought a Dell Slim and Sleek USB keyboard, hoping the keys had the same Dell action I enjoy on my computer at work. They don't, but the keyboard looks nice and certainly wasn't expensive, so I'm happy--or would be, if it worked.

So far I've discovered that the left-hand shift key doesn't work, and neither does the backspace. (I'm typing this on my other keyboard.) At the top left of the unit is a lit-up green symbol resembling a lock (a square with a handle) with the number 9 inside. If I press the Scroll Lock a similar symbol lights up, with a downward-pointing arrow inside the lock.

I'm wondering if the "9 symbol" has anything to do with the keys that don't work. If so, perhaps I haven't bought a defective keyboard.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Susan
