Miele 18 inch Dishwasher Review - with Pictures
Comments (10)Thanks everybody - you're welcome and I'll post another report some time later in February about our Bosch dishwasher. robert laundry: The European market has very strict requirements as far as energy consumption goes. Every dishwasher (and most other major appliances) carry so called Energy Labels. In order for a dishwasher to achieve an A rating for energy use (very low) the temperatures have to be lowered. At the same time, however, the label also provides information about the DW's cleaning and drying performance. So while the temps have to be lowered - washing and drying times have to be extended in order to achieve an A rating for washing & drying. However, all this applies only to one specific cycle usually called Eco, Save Energy or similar. Other cycles are faster, though....See MoreMiele dishwasher and size of drain
Comments (7)"Water drops through; it is not pumped through. " Sorry daviro1 - THIS IS TOTALLY INCORRECT !!! Maybe you should get A CLUE before you start dispensing advice about matters that affect other people's wallets. Mieles do PUMP out the drain water! What do you thing the impeller/pump that is in the sump is doing during a drain cycle??? Sheeze, you are partially correct though. With a high loop the water will drain by gravity from the high point - AFTER THE PUMP HAS TURNED OFF! The hose will be under pressure as long as the pump is on so it is forcing the water through whatever size hole you have the hose hooked up to. Besides, a high loop is a a great idea with a Miele but they will function without one! In fact you can even drain them straight down into a cellar or basement drain. Sure IT CAN BE hooked up to a 1/2" opening , but why would one take the chance of setting off the drain sensor in their $1500+ DW or risk the less than stellar connection btw. the 7/8" hose and the 1/2" drain connection ??? Just get the correct tailpiece. I'm sure you have them in Canada, tell your plumber to quit being lazy. BTW david - many "Miele Trained" installers don't work for Miele, and some have not even sat through the classes ! Many times their bosses sit and hopefully impart the training onto their minions. Anyway , part of the Miele's training is to impart practices that work with THEIR MACHINES so that they work properly and do not cause premature failure or generate service calls. The practices are by no means the only way to to do things, but they work for their products, why not just follow the instructions ??? It's not as if they are asking you to use a hookup that is not widely available or has to be special ordered or costs $106. It really boils down to laziness - just get the correct parts and quit trying to Rube Goldberg the install to fit the materials you have on your truck! Our jobs are spec'd with a separate p-trap for the DW drain and the diagrams and pictures are sent to the plumbers beforehand, and still some showup with those branch pipes or knock out the disposer hole. They then try to sell me on how "you'll be fine with " it this way, only to get beet red when I show them the spec, and the correspondence showing it how we want it. They are not happy when they have to by a new disposal, especially the ones we use, because they we lazy or just knew better than the person ordering the service. Re: ASKO - they do the same as Miele in that they guide the install to fit the engineering on their machine. It is not the SAME ENGINEERING, so Asko has a different intake line and discharge line which has a high loop built into it already as well as a step down fitting attached to mate to several sized drain tubes. That's what works for their units. How bout you call them up davidro1 and ask them about ditching the high loop and running the hose straight out the bottom of the unit into the basement laundry and come back and report to us what they say about that ! unix... bottom line is that it's not a good idea to hook up your DW to a 1/2" drain. It can be done, and it can work, but that's not the same thing....See MoreDishwasher Shopping: Miele, Kenmore, Others?
Comments (12)We recently purchased a 800 series Bosh DW to replace the low end whirlpool the builder installed. I am sure there are many different brands/models of DW that will work for you, I only have experience with the low end model whirlpool that the builder installed and our new Bosh. (This is not to put down the whirlpool, I am sure their higher end stuff is very different from the low end model we had) At first my wife mentioned that she didn't think it would hold as much as the old one, like you, we got the impression it was a little smaller inside, then we realized that we could completely remove the silverware box that sits in the bottom taking up room because the DW has a 'third rack' for silverware in the very top of the unit -- this now gives us (I think) more room, and we have been able to fit as much or more into the unit as we could with the older unit. I think the Mieles and Boshs both have this rack - I'm not sure about other brands, it seems to be becoming a popular feature -- if you don't like the big silverware box in the bottom then I would definitely look for this. It works very well in our Bosh. As you mentioned adjustable tines, the Bosh has tines that will completely lay flat for larger items and the middle rack is adjustable up or down by several inches -- good for having lots of pots in the bottom or taller glasses on top. We have kids and have lots of little plastic cups - they do not seem to dry very well - there is supposedly a version of jet dry that works better with plastic but it isn't a big enough problem that I have tried that yet - not an issue for you however as you mentioned you don't have any plastic. Now, the reason I am writing this -- one of the first tasks we used the DW for was to wash about 5 loads of old china and some stainless steel pots and pans that had been left in an abandoned home - with food still on the china plates and burned into the pans -- these dishes had sat almost one year with the food now totally dried onto the plates. The pans (SS) had food burned into the bottoms and had been used on an old electric coil stove so the bottoms of the pans were black - with food that had burned in over the years of use. If I were going to have to clean these manually we would have just tossed the whole lot - but since we had a new DW we thought we would run them through, fully expecting to have to hand wash them after the DW. We threw all kinds of assorted china, and lots of pottery pieces as well into the DW with no regard to whether or not the piece was DW safe or not. When I opened the DW after the first load -- WOW -- the china sparkled like it had been hand cleaned by the most careful of butlers - every piece shined. I wish now that I had taken before and after pictures. It repeated this performance for about 4 loads of china. Then the SS pots/pans. I remind you these had cooked on leftover food that had been sitting for nearly a year, and they came out *almost* spotless, even the bottoms of the pans that had been totally black in color were shiny silver now. I took some advice from others on this forum and purchased some Barkeepers Friend and the few tough spots that were left on the pans cleaned up perfectly using a small scrubber and the BKF. The pans are literally like new! I am sure that other high end DW's could and would do the same, but needless to say we are happy with our purchase. Our Bosh DW is model# SHX8ER55UC/52 We used finish Powerball All-in-One and finish DW Salt finish Jet Dry rinse aid Good luck on your decision! Comments (10)I have only used the dishwasher about a dozen times but each time i am getting better at loading it... i could wait a few more days and wash more but i tend to wash sooner. For me i don't seem to have any issues i have been washing milk bottles with tiny openings and they come out cleaner than ever, i do cutlery, bowl bowls bowls (have to angle em or the bases collect water) and plates and other dishes. Whirlpool_trainee: lets see some random load pics (if you have any) I think my tines are a bit different than the dw pictured....See Morepicklenose
