Can someone just TELL me which hood to buy?!

After spending what seems like eons researching refrigerators, ranges, dishwashers, etc. (including countless hours reading GW threads) I am exhausted and not up to tackling hoods.

I understand baffle vs. mesh filters, CFM calculations, recommended width of the hood, and the various types: chimney, wall, undercabinet, liner.

What I don't understand is "squirrel cages", centrifugal fans, fan blade, turbine, etc. I watched a youtube video on how to clean a Proline hood that had baffle filters and a centrifugal fan (which required unscrewing the cage and dismantling the fan). Are most hoods constructed this way? Pictures of some hoods show two fans underneath, are they not covered by filters? I want a hood to be quiet (not all mfrs. state their sone or decibel level), easy to clean, moderately priced, baffle filters, internal blower, 600+CFM. I think our ducting is 7" (will not be changed). It needs to be undercabinet and not very tall (around 10" is ok). It will cover a 36" range with 6 burners (yes, you GW'ers convinced me to upgrade from a 30" range).

Can someone educate me on about what's going on inside the hood or point me to the thread that explains it? Thanks!!

Your setup and requirements are almost the same as mine. I went with the Vent-a-Hood PRH9-236.

I would also look into the Broan E6436SS. You may run into issues finding a hood to fit your existing 7" duct (the VAH is 8"). I found there were not many options under 10" height and 600+ CFM.

I would suggest one of the Kobe undercabinet hoods. They will work with your 7" duct, relatively quiet, excellent easy to clean baffles and moderately priced. CH-77, CH-179 and CH-191. Welcome. Includes: 2 adapters for hard or soft plumbing option (1-1/2" FPT x 1" Barb/1" MPT and 1-1/2" x 1-7/8" Slip). FPT= Female Pipe thread (threads are on the inside) MPT= Male Pipe Thread (threads are on the ouside) to mate with female. Male dominated industry. Slip= connector fitting with no threads, used for hard pipes like PVC Barb= used to insert into hose and can also adapt hard pipe to hose Sounds like you should bring the pump to the hardware store and look for not a 1" barb but, a 1 1/4 to achieve a higher flow. Aslo see if you can get threaded unions to remove the pump for service or you will be cutting pipes and disturbing the plumbing to remove it later. Are you going to use the black corrugated hose, PVC or what? Do not use the soft silicone hoses, they will collapse and cruch as soon as they get a chance.

i just dont understand all this ... first.. what picture.. the top one ...??? that looks like every un-named forsythia i have ever seen.. planted.. and left to its own devices ... given 20 feet by 20 feet.. and left to its own devices for a decade or two ... that is the natural shape of a generic forsythia ... and i dont see anything weeping about it ... in fact ... if you right click on the pic and get the pic info, you get this: http://www.floridata.com/ref/f/images/fors_sp1.jpg which in my warped world.. means its a picture of the species forsythia ... not the weeping version.. there are too many pure vertical spikes in that pic .... and it looks little like the pics at the link which are true weepers ... with no vertical spikes ... [and there are not many pics of the actual weeping version] me thinks that the pic does not match the title above the pic.. and i dont understand why they list the species with the common name 'weeping forsythia' ??? seriously.. am i missing something here... or is the website using a generic forsythia picture ???? and what is ilove wanting the ID for ... do you want whats in the pic.. or do you want a weeper???? .. do you have the space to generate a plant like the picture???? ken Here is a link that might be useful: link

I don't know where you are in zone 6, but here on the border of zones 4 & 5 in central NH pagoda dogwood (Cornus alternifolia) is an easy plant in our acid, very fine sandy loam, growing to 5-6' in 4 years and topping out at around 20'. I have several growing in full sun and a bunch growing in part sun, all of which do very well. The ones growing in full, dense shade struggle and have rather sparse blooms. I find it a plant of multiseason interest, and it's one of my favorite plants. In spring it has those lovely blooms for about 10 days and then the berries develop from green through shades of red to a deep, almost black purple on brilliant red stems. In August the tree is filled with birds eating the berries, and at this time of year it turns a variety of colors ranging from chartreuse to yellow and peach to reds and red-purple, depending on the tree and the particular year. In winter the branch silhouette against the snow is quite elegant. As far as I know there aren't any selections with green leaves; those are all seed grown. I know of two selections with variegated leaves: Golden Shadows AKA 'W. Stackman' which has yellow and green leaves, and 'Argentea' AKA 'Variegata', which has white and green leaves. Both tend to grow much more slowly than the green ones. I have had three small Golden Shadows for 3 growing seasons and they have only about doubled their original size in that time. If you visit the Garden Web forum for your area and do a search for both pagoda dogwood and Cornus alternifolia, you may find that others in your area have already shared opinions on how this plant does in your area. Once again, for clarification, I was asking for "ANY information to include value" on my piece. I wasn't just asking for an appraisal nor was I asking for comparisons or for the dose of smart *s* that was in that response. And now I got someone else who says they are "ticked" off at me because I responded to someone who came across as a smart *s* and didn't provide me any information that I had requested. I didn't see in any rules here that says that I should start all post with "I come in Peace". But for some reason I don't think that would have helped. Once again all I can say is WOW! This forum sure knows how to welcome people. This whole "antiques & collectibles" forum is something else. "Holyier than thou" forum seems more fitting. When I found this site I was impressed and was going spread the word, now can you guess the word I will have to spread about it? And for all the other stone throwers like lindac, go ahead and get it out of your system.

Thank you, I actually saw that Broan model in a store today, the salesman said it would work with our duct size. Kobe has positive reviews on this site. I'll just focus on those two brands and be done with it. I don't think I could go wrong with either.

The VAH hood has squirrel cage fans that also act as grease slingers. This type requires disassembly to some degree for cleaning. Mesh filter and baffle filter hoods require removal of the filters for cleaning. This is normally simpler to perform than cleaning squirrel cage motor assemblies. Baffles filter even when dirty; meshes must be cleaned to keep airflow up. No system removes all sizes of grease particles except intense UV systems not applicable here.

Except for the VAH, all other configurations use fans for air movement only. Some have fans in the hood, some in-line with the ducting, and some on the roof. In-line and roof fans may be selected separately from the hood in many cases. Fans operating above (past) the filtering media should not require normal cleaning, but I wouldn't claim perpetual freedom.

Fans with what one would call blades can have different configurations of blades depending on many factors that are probably outside the interest of most of us. The important factor is the "fan curve," or plot of flow rate versus the pressure difference across the fan. The more vertical the line is from the zero static pressure point, the more resistant the fan flow will be to pressure loss from duct friction, air turbulence in the baffles, flow past meshes, aerodynamic effects at duct transitions and hood aperture, etc. Best/Broan (and Wolf) can provide fan curves. Very likely Greenheck does for commercial units. I don't know of other manufacturers' habits. I would expect all residential fans to have monotonic fan curves; otherwise, there can be some setting/restriction that would cause the fan to hunt (cycle between two speeds).
