'Gas on Glass' feature, and/or 'Glass Touch controls'.

In my upcoming kitchen remodel, I may do a cooktop w/ oven directly underneath (there's no space for a wall oven) -- or -- a 30" (gas) slide-in range.

In researching my options, I have run across this "Gas on glass" feature of the GE Profile PGS968SEMSS. What IS this? Do we like it?! ;o) And does anyone have a good photo of it? (The website is dreadfully lacking clear photos!)

AND, what about the "Glass Touch Controls" of the GE Profile JGS968SEKSS? Is this something different? Any additional info or photos?

All input, advice, opinions VERY appreciated and welcomed! Thank you!

I am also looking at the same slide in oven. I believe the glass feature is a ceremic made top, like a smooth electric top. I like the look but have been told if things fall on it it can break. I am also looking at the SS model # JGS975SEMSS.

Thank you for the reply. But (unlike electric heating elements) wouldn't the gas glass top be protected by the grates? If so, then the only time it would be vulnerable was when the grates were off, no?

Also, wondering... is there still a FLAME? How would that work???!

I LOVE the idea of a super-easy-to-clean (gas) range top and this is really intriguing me!

^^^^ YES I did a google search to find a solution to melted polyester on a glass fireplace front and found this thread. I started with Weiman's Glass Cook Top cleaner, a paper towel and an old credit card for scraping. This took off a lot of it, but a thin, visible layer that I could feel with my hand remained. I took the advice of jk171400 and used a heat gun and razor blade paint scraper to get that last layer off, followed by a quick wipe with a paper towel. Towards the end, I was using the heat gun less and relying more on the scraper. Once you get the angle of the scraper right, it scrapes it right off. I went at it until I could run my hand across the glass and it was smooth. Success!

glass control panel on Whirlpool induction range w/ double ovens?

Well this is probably too late to help you but it looks like the controls up front for the induction cooktop are glass based on the way the owners manual on Whirlpool's website calls them "touch controls" However the oven controls on the back panel seem to be standard plastic push button controls. Finding this out took a bit of detective work. First I downloaded the parts list for WGI925C0BS00 on Whirlpool's website. I found the keypanel in the diagram and looked up the part number online (W10528782). Googling that led me to a bunch of websites offering it for sale calling it a membrane switch panel, which tells me it has standard plastic push buttons. This may not have been the answer you were hoping for but glass touch controls have their drawbacks. On my last range I broke the glass touch controls (entirely my own fault) and the replacement part was EXPENSIVE. Much more than a standard plastic membrane switch panel. They all get too hot to touch. Not child friendly at all. I've not seen the cooling option but would bet it would still cause a burn if touched.

I had a KitchenAid gas on glass when we built our house. I hated it. The burners were up above the glass top, making it easy for pans to tip over, and there were wells under the burner which needed cleaning, as well as the burners. I really disliked it. Then, we replaced it with a five-burner gas on glass which was better, but it still required scouring the burners and the wells. Now, I have induction and I spend about 2 minutes every day, max, cleaning off the cooktop. I have a DeDietrich (imported) which has individual timers on each "burner". I set the timer and don't have to worry about overcooking or burning anything as it automatically turns off at the correct time. Doesn't heat up the kitchen - and is 90% efficient (gas is 50% or less efficient) as all the heat is in the pan. I cooked on induction in France for a month a few years ago and, after just one day, decided that was the way to go.

' glass controls' means no knobs, electronically controlled. Are you sure this isn't a dual-fuel type?

Here's a link to a GE range that says "Glass Controls". It looks to have definite knobs. ??? Perhaps it means the little *screen* is glass? I am so confused!

I've seen something like this at Sears. The oven controls are 'glass controls', the little screen between everything.
