Anyone know anything about OpenOffice?

I have changed laptops twice and now my MS Office suite won't run because it thinks I have used too many copies of our original CD. Going through Microsoft is such a hassle. I found a product called Open Office that is supposed to work just like MS. Anyone know anything about it?

Yes I Use it, works well, it does not as far as I know come with an e-mail client.

I use it regularly at home and it is compatible with any Word .doc which I have published at work. A new v2.3 is currently available. For what little I had dabbled in the entire suite I find it more than sufficient.

I've ordered from them and the quality ranged from average to below average. They are cheap and do offer a 1-year replacement guarantee if you mail back your dead plants. However, they don't let you choose rootstocks and they don't have nearly the variety of other choices (local nurseries don't offer these advantages, either). Fruit trees are too much work to go cheap on. If you want to maximize price to quality, spend a few bucks more and buy from Burnt Ridge Nursery (west coast). Spend a couple bucks more beyond that and you get a ton of choices (both varieties and rootstocks) from another very reputable nursery, Adams County (east coast). There are also other good choices out there (search the fruit and orchard forum).

There really isn't much left on this side of the border. The Americans are all either major producers that don't sell much besides the latest and greatest, and boutique nurseries that have zero to none experience with life below zero. They sell rooted cuttings that will do fine if they are hardy varieties, but those are often few and far between, and their usual offerings are often very difficult to get up to size in this climate. You also can't necessarily trust their advice on what's hardy or what's best for their roses. So the standard source for roses is Pickering in Ontario. They ship from Buffalo, so there aren't any border issues. Palatine is a relatively new Ontario nursery that I've heard good things about. They do mostly modern roses, and I don't know if they charge for a phytosanitary certificate. Pickering doesn't. It's usually $25, which isn't bad for a large order, but a killer cost on a small one. Hortico is the other big Ontario nursery. I've never ordered from them, and they have a very uneven reputation. There are people who have been happy with them, and people who can't stand them. They used to primarily be a wholesale operation, and part of their problem was having absolutely no clue how to deal with customers. A lot of it depends specifically what you are looking for. Pickering is an acceptable replacement. Just don't make the mistake of thinking they are growing roses on the frozen tundra just because they are in Canada. They are on the lake shore, and warmer than most of us.

Thanks! I am going to download it. I am not a huge user either so I am sure it will be enough for my simple needs.

When you install select a custom install in case there is some other item like a tool bar attached then you can choose to not have that installed more & more downloads have things attached now.

To expand on the toolbar alert, and I do agree with it, Zep is not speaking of pertinent application toolbars. He is referring to browser add-ons like Google Toolbar, etc. Just to make the things totally clear.

I downloaded it and had no problems. How do I add an icon to my desktop so I can access it? Right now I go into one of my old MS Word documents and it opens fine. I can change and edit ok. I guess what I am asking is how do I access it normally to start a new file?

Start>programs look for open office, put your mouse over it look for the drop down menu to appear, now put mouse over "open office Writer" right click & hold drag to desk top, you can also drag to start button and create it in the start menu, The option to create a desktop Icon should have been available on custom install.

Another question to all you helpful people, is there a way to always save the files created in OpenOffice as the MS extentsions, .doc, .els etc? I made some test documents and sent them to my husband. When they were in the OpenOffice files, he could no read them. When I save the files as MS forms, it was fine. I am afraid I will forget to change the extension every time I save.

That is a problem. I bought microsoft word rather then deal with it. The files you make in open office are only going to work in open office.

I can select what extension I need, ie, .doc, .xls etc. I was just hoping I could set them as the standard. I have sent other people .doc documents from OpenOffice and as long as I changed the extension, they had no problem reading/opening them. So far I really like it and it is just like MS Office.

I am happy with it for the most part and would recommend it.

Bunny-lover, open writer and click tools > options. Click on the + in front of load/save and then click on general. In the dialog box you can make the change you want. Its at the bottom of the dialog box.
