La Cornue vs. Lacanche question

I did some research into the La Cornue Chateau yesterday, specifically the one that is 59.1" wide. With one of the 16 standard colors, one of the 7 standard top configurations, one electric and one gas oven, and no additional customization, the price is $36,000. La Cornue requires a 50% deposit and it takes about 14 weeks from order date to receive delivery. The stove weighs 1750 lbs. Would someone tell me how a similar Lacanche would be priced and how long delivery would take? I know it wouldn't be exactly the same (I guess a Cluny would be approx. 55" and a Fontenay would be about 60" but with only one oven?)

why don't you call lacanche and get a firm quote for what you want instead of hoping someone around here has exactly what you want or worse, wildly speculates?

We're at the time of year where we see price increases, shipping increases, or maybe decreases, currency resets ect. Price I'd likely to be significantly different than one that was order even 2 weeks ago.

Because I'm not sure exactly what I want; because I'm accustomed to people here being helpful; because I do not want follow-up calls and emails until I have looked into various other options; and because I'm only asking for a ballpark comparison.

I thought I was getting SubZero (grew up wiht SubZero) but could never figure out the right combination of units and didn't like the door of one, the width of another, the interior layout of a third, so ended up buying Miele which was just right (no, my locks aren't gold). You're chosing between more equivalent units than I, so the differences are less. Things I like about the Miele are how wide the door swings on fully integrated, the lighting, the lack of shelf rattle (though this may be an installation issue rather than a true one). Excellent lighting. Easy configuration. I don't remember on the over/under, but the all fridge has a place to put full depth platters. I think the o/u might too. SubZero has the air filter, which is pretty cool! Hm... It's also a great fridge, but I can't think of other advantages because the Miele was such a good choice for me. Non-unit issues, of course, include American made, and long experience in the market. Miele claims to have been working on their new American fridge units for seven years but they're new on the market. The boxes are made by the factory that does BSH, but they claim the electronics, etc., are made by Miele themselves. They do have a good customer service reputation. SubZero have mixed reviews here, but that might be the talk about the problems syndrome. Ask the local repairmen and parts departments for each what their opinions are on the units. Oh! The other advantage, or not, of the SZ is that you get full deep shelves with the glass door. But then you have to clean your fridge for company. :) And you lose the convenience of door storage and shallower shelves that things don't get lost on. Both are quality units, so to a great extent it's which is more pleasing to you.

jlangfo, We have a french blue Volnay (the one described by Patrick) and love it. The oven is smaller than conventional U.S. ovens but it has not limited our cooking ability at all. In fact, our prior range was a very old 1950s GE Stratliner that also had small ovens and I realized I much prefer them over conventional sized ovens. They hold the heat better, cook food faster and I personally haven't not found their size limiting - we cooked an 18lb turkey last fall just after we got it. The Volnay also holds half sheet pans comfortably. We have a second oven (a Gagg Combi-Steam oven) and that oven is smaller and the combination works great for us. I looked at the CornuFe and Chateau briefly, but quickly preferred the look, quality and feel of the Lacanche. We chose the 5 burner-gas top and an electric oven (5k burner; 15k burner, 18k burner and two 10k burners). We hardly ever use the 18k burner, just when canning or boiling a pot of water - it's a LOT of power. The warming cupboard is a nice bonus and gets used a lot in the fall/winter. Lacanche has a program if you don't live near a vendor where they can sometimes match you up with a current owner to visit their range in their home. We live in Seattle where Lacanche is based so didn't do this (I test cooked at their headquarters) but many buyers have found this very helpful. I'd do it all over again if I had the choice. We've had ours for 7 years now (pic way up above) and I do love it. HOWEVER... one side of our oven broke in September (the convection element needs to be replaced), and the part to replace it still has not come in - 4 months later we are still waiting. The warranty is 5 years, so we are out of luck with La Cornue working with us and have to rely on our local retail establishment for service work. The oven sizes are fine, unless you plan on doing a giant turkey. We've done an 18 lb turkey no problem, and I love doing roasters in it. Cleaning - the ovens have sides - top and bottom as well - that remove for cleaning so it's not a complete nightmare. But if you are used to self-cleaning ovens you may not like it. All that being said, we are overall happy with it. But if we ever need another oven, I doubt I would go with the same brand only because service has been very difficult. Good luck!

Hi there! Both the Lacanche and La Cornues are lovely stoves! Our Lacanche Cluny 1400 was installed a couple of weeks ago. We have an induction hob over the warming cupboard and then the Classique configuration over the ovens. Our kitchen reno is not yet complete (waiting on counters after a mishap during fabrication), but I have used the cooktop several times. I've used induction to keep soup cooking at a simmer. I've used the power burner and smaller burners as well. Everything responds well, quality is amazing and I have no complaints. I did bake brownies in the oven, and they cooked fast. I'm sure it has to do with the fact that the ovens are smaller and takes less time to heat. I have had no repairs. My contractor did have a few questions during installation and Art Culinaire was super responsive and walked him through his questions. I think you'll find on these message boards that AC is very active, responsive and supportive to all types of questions regarding the Lacanche ranges. Are you close to a showroom? If not, you can also be connected to an owner in your area to see their range in person.

Cluny 1400 (55 5/16", two small ovens, 1 warming cupboard, standard finish, including delivery) is about $12,350.

Sully (55 5/16", two larger ovens, standard finish, including delivery) is about $14,700.

Fontenay (59 3/8", one larger oven, 2 warming cupboards, standard finish, including delivery) is about $13,000.

These figures are from a brochure I received in September. I don't know what the lead time is, but you would need a similar deposit. Hope that helps.

Lead time is also in same ballpark. pianocook just recently posted for the first time to the Lacanche thread (number 39):

She said she just ordered hers (her post was on Oct 28) and her Cluny is due for delivery in March.

I think that the prices that cinamom posted are "base prices" that don't include most extras. For example, any color other than Matte Black are an upcharge. I know that our Cluny 1400, which we ordered in May I believe, cost at least a thousand more than cinamom's price. That also included extras such as the island backsplash spacer, the French top stainless cover, the griddle, etc.

I think most Lacanche owners would salivate at the thought of a "real" La Cornue, but find that the price is just outside of most of our budgets. The Lacanches provide much of the same gorgeous looks, colors, and cooking configurations, though without the totally hand built construction of the La Cornue. Still we could justify a $13K range when a $36K range was just out of the question.

Yes, indeed, the prices I listed are the absolute lowest base prices. Any upgrades in color, trim, extra accessories would add to the price. The only "extra" I included was delivery as I figured that isn't really an "extra".

Art Culinaire's website has a listing of 'early arrivals' that show pricing and availability of a few ranges that may give you some idea of cost of other options. Some of these are available now, though you lose the ability to customize the configuration.

Thanks, pepper, I've been monitoring those. Problem is I saw a copper-trimmed La Cornue last night and had an absolutely irrationally emotional response to it. Now, I can't get it out of my mind! I feel like a jerk even thinking so much about it right now.
