Domain Registration

Hello,

I was thinking of getting a domain name registered somewhere (and then using it for email), but I'm not sure *where* to register it. What would you recommend as the best (most reliable, reputable, security-conscious, etc.) place to register a domain ?

Thanks !

Scott

An interesting question, but would he be able to set up his email account without activating the name? Registering and parking a name would be what Scott seems to be looking for but I doubt any carrier would allow the emails without monthly fees for the web site.

Dan Tenaglia was the creator of Missouriplants.com and Alabamaplants.com. Tragically he was hit by a car while he and his wife were out bicycling in Feb. 2007. He died shortly after that and was 37 years old. Dan used to post here and had a wonderful knowledge of plants as was evidenced by his websites which benefited many. He would always sign off on his posts, " have fun ". We used to correspond by email and he sent me seeds of Collinsia verna. He made me promise not to tell anyone! Looking at pics on the internet is a lot different than using them to make money selling seeds at a very high price. Why would I be flattered that some guy is laughing all the way to the bank because my pic sells his seeds? So if it's raining outside and I see your hat and coat on a coat rack by the door,it's ok for me to grab them because I left mine at home... My pics are a LOT different than John's works of art. I've seen only a few of mine used by others so far. These users only want the best for free. The guy could at least given the photographer credit for taking the picture after asking to use it to sell their seeds.

I am in Canada and used exclaimdomain.com, and for $99 I registered my .ca domain and got a year's worth of hosting, which also gives me 25 megs of space and 5 email addys and other stuff I dont actually need. I did a lot of reading online and bookmarked several possible companies to deal with before settling on exclaimdomain.com. I like that it's an all-in-one deal, domain reg. and hosting. I know my situation probably doesnt help you but I suggest you read a LOT and compare who gives you what and how much it costs.

Hi Connie, I'm no expert on this, but I am in somewhat the same situation as you are. I have a website tht I paid someone to design for me. They registered the domain name that I wanted. I, also, need to make frequent changes, but when I asked the designer about this, she said that I would have to go through her each time. I found that unacceptable, so I decided I'd better learn how to do it myself. My ISP, Earthlink, gives me some free web space, so I figured I'd use that to practice and, when I got it down, I'd tackle the paid site. However, on the free space, they assign you the address, you don't pick it. Mine is http://earthlink.net/~johnson29/. Yours would probably be something like http://aol.com/~sprtn185/. To get SpoiltRottn.com, you would have to register that domain. You will have to pay to register, and for someone to host your site. Prices for this vary. Do a Google search for web hosting, or domain registration, and I'm sure you'll find quite a few. I use Netscape Page Composer to create the pages. It's easy to use, and free. I then use WS-FTP to upload the pages to the web site. WS-FTP is also free, and they have a tut on how to use it. You will, then, "fill in the blanks" on WS-FTP with the information you will get from the hosting company, and it'll be on the internet.

I use Pair.com . They used to be the largest independently owned hosting company in the US, maybe the world.

I have their bottom of the bucket basic FTP account - forget cost exactly .. comes with way too much, or lots of webserver space for most people other than maybe mr pro photographer for about $65 annually, with lots bytes movements & up to 200 email accounts.

You get very little support for making your webspace or other simple things like email so you might need to do some reading to set things up. They've got plenty of self help reading. They really arent in the retail webhosting business.

I configure my mail to delete all except myNames,,, then forward to a spam filtered email account there, which forward again to verizon or hotmail - you can set up webmail too. Sounds complicated but pretty simple.

They do Domain set up's and annual subscription cost isn't very pricey. But its done right and maintained so it stays listed.

Thanks to zep, owbist, and mikie for the responses.

To owbist: Yes, I should have been more clear about what I'm looking for, but I am something of a novice in these matters, so I wasn't sure how to express myself.

I am looking to register a domain name, but I am not yet interested in getting a whole website going. I would just -- at this point -- want to get an email account going using the domain. (I believe Fastmail is one service that will provide email for people who bring a domain name with them, right ? I think Lavabit might as well.)

I realize I *could* just go with the Everyone.net email service, but I didn't know if that would end up a more expensive route in the long run. I thought first registering a domain name with someone and then finding an email service to host it would be cheaper and might leave me in more control of things, so to speak.

Any further suggestions appreciated (while I look into the sites already mentioned above by zep and mikie).

Thanks !

You'll need a webpage for a domain name to point to. So you do need a website.
A quick search shows several that do set you up.. and one I looked at gives you a one page website and 5 email accounts for a small setup fee and $5 per month.

Problem with some of those types may be its someone not unlike myself that may tire of the hastles and says I'm shutting down... see ya.
And I dont want to take the time nor expense to transer your domain name to your ownship... so - again, sorry.
If you really really want to buy your domain name, make me an offer, but make it work my time and effort to transfer it.
