Domain Registration

Hello,

I was thinking of getting a domain name registered somewhere (and then using it for email), but I'm not sure *where* to register it. What would you recommend as the best (most reliable, reputable, security-conscious, etc.) place to register a domain ?

An interesting question, but would he be able to set up his email account without activating the name? Registering and parking a name would be what Scott seems to be looking for but I doubt any carrier would allow the emails without monthly fees for the web site.

I could not find the first article where I read about it. They were saying that it was standard to cut off the comb of one of the breeds I have Silver Pheonix, Ameracauna, or Favorelle. They said that this is done to show the birds and they also stated that it did not hurt if it was done at the right age. They gave the info in the article but being that I was not going to do it to any of my birds I did not read it in depth. I was just passing the info on. If you are interested in knowing more I guess I can search my history and find the original links. There were a few. Nothing mentioned about fighting. I am going to get Guineas if I can ever find any peeps or pullets. I am going to keep them in the battery cage for a few months before I let them out. Once I start letting them out I would prefer if they roost in the trees at night. I hope I train them to know without a doubt where they live. I have heard if you keep them in their living place for at least 2-3 months they will not stray too far off the property. Not ever having any, I am not sure if that works or not but once I test it out, I will let you know. Also LASTLY "they say" that they will get rid of bugs and not dig up your garden like chickens will do.

Mjo, In Photobucket, go to "My album", then click on "browse" on the first rectangle on the side. That pulls up a listing and you have to select Iphoto library, then I click on originals, 2007, the set of photos you want, then the "img/url" number for the pic you want. Then click "open" at the bottom of the frame. That puts it in the box on Photobucket. Then you click "Upload" on the Photobucket frame and wait a bit. When it finishes, the pic will be in your album. If you want to load more than one, you just keep loading them from Iphoto, then you can click "upload" just the one time for all of them. I hope this makes sense, it is so hard to put it in words. Hopefully, someone else is better at this than I am and can help more. Just keep trying--it is so fun to be able to share your pics on here. Good luck. P.S. Maybe you could checkout an inexpensive Internet service like Netzero--ads say it is only $9.99 per month. I am sure there are other companies out there too. Maybe just do a search for "Free or Inexpensive DSL". You will enjoy the faster speed so much more. Luvs

I point all my clients to droa.com and suggest buying a long-term registartion (e.g. 5 years). Also pick up some alternate spellings to "park" on your main domain to catch that traffic and to prevent competitors from trying that dirty trick. There are some not widely known technical reasons for keeping the part between the "www." and the ".com" to 12 characters or less. And something shorter is easier for visitors to remember *and* to fit on a business card, yet mroe reasons to pick up alternate names for the longer versions of your company name while using a smaller one for the main hosting account. Not so much for the original poster but anyone running thier own site, there are some tricks to substantially reducing bandwidth of downloaded photos. Always use a low-quality preview photo that is no larger than it appears onthe page and link to a higher quality shot where that's needed if someone wants a closer look. If you can track where most of your traffic is going, those are the paths to check first on tuning picture resolutions. Limiting use of graphic navigation system is also a plus, especailly if you want someone on dialup to be able to navigate your site. Though I'm a big proponent of using the web as a cheap way to share photos with clients, I also push not forcing them to download lots of graphics unless they really want to see it. A simple but fast and clear site will get a lot more return visits than one that is flashy but too cluttered and impossibly slow to load over dialup.

a few things you want to check when looking at the free hosting sites, check their dedicated forums see if there are good topics and recent topics also check some of the websites those people have built using the hosting company. Look for the very annoying toolbars some put at the bottom of your website that are linked to things like facebook, twitter etc, they are worse than ads in my book. I know that x10hosting does use those you can check their forum and view some of their sites and you will see what I mean. I do not mind a plain old ad banner all those jumping and annoying things I really hate. you can find out a lot just by doing some reading in the various forums dedicated to each hosting company.

I use Pair.com . They used to be the largest independently owned hosting company in the US, maybe the world.

I have their bottom of the bucket basic FTP account - forget cost exactly .. comes with way too much, or lots of webserver space for most people other than maybe mr pro photographer for about $65 annually, with lots bytes movements & up to 200 email accounts.

You get very little support for making your webspace or other simple things like email so you might need to do some reading to set things up. They've got plenty of self help reading. They really arent in the retail webhosting business.

I configure my mail to delete all except myNames,,, then forward to a spam filtered email account there, which forward again to verizon or hotmail - you can set up webmail too. Sounds complicated but pretty simple.

They do Domain set up's and annual subscription cost isn't very pricey. But its done right and maintained so it stays listed.

Thanks to zep, owbist, and mikie for the responses.

To owbist: Yes, I should have been more clear about what I'm looking for, but I am something of a novice in these matters, so I wasn't sure how to express myself.

I am looking to register a domain name, but I am not yet interested in getting a whole website going. I would just -- at this point -- want to get an email account going using the domain. (I believe Fastmail is one service that will provide email for people who bring a domain name with them, right ? I think Lavabit might as well.)

I realize I *could* just go with the Everyone.net email service, but I didn't know if that would end up a more expensive route in the long run. I thought first registering a domain name with someone and then finding an email service to host it would be cheaper and might leave me in more control of things, so to speak.

Any further suggestions appreciated (while I look into the sites already mentioned above by zep and mikie).

You'll need a webpage for a domain name to point to. So you do need a website.
A quick search shows several that do set you up.. and one I looked at gives you a one page website and 5 email accounts for a small setup fee and $5 per month.

Problem with some of those types may be its someone not unlike myself that may tire of the hastles and says I'm shutting down... see ya.
And I dont want to take the time nor expense to transer your domain name to your ownship... so - again, sorry.
If you really really want to buy your domain name, make me an offer, but make it work my time and effort to transfer it.
