Help! Need undercounter bar fridge

that won't break the bank.

We are finishing the basement and are including a bar area. We had purchased a bar fridge that we thought would work but finally read the installation instructions and it says it must be used as a freestanding fridge. Now after checking most of the inexpensive ones cannot be used under counter unless there are a gazillion inches of air space around them.

Are there any that are not ridiculously expensive? I would rather not spend a ton for such a fridge. I had a space of 21" set aside but now I don't know if I need at least 24". I had also hoped for stainless or stainless look. Should we consider a beverage cooler? I know that HD had one that had vents on the bottom so I think that would work. It was pretty pricey mind you and I wondered if I would miss the small freezer some have on top?

Any that you can think of? (Oh and I did try to convince DH that we should revamp the layout and go for a fridge drawer but his eyes starting bugging out of his head and I worried about a heart attack so I told him I was kidding...

We're probably going to get a Summit UC stainless freezer. They have fridge models, too, and not nearly as expensive as the drawer models out there. But not cheap either. You'll pay close to $1000 for this I think.

21" is not enough.

Most units take up 24" minimum.

there are a very few @ 15 & 18 but none of them inexpensive.

what would you use that smallish freezer compartment for ?

Got mine at Home Depot. It was a Magic Chef, they still have it in the stores (but I don't see it online) but the name has changed. They also offer a wine fridge model but the one I got has glass shelves not wire shelves for wine bottles. I spent $300 (on sale) I saw them recently for more $$; sorry I forget how much. It is Stainless steel, has a glass door and looks great. The down side is that it only gets down to 39 degrees, which we are okay with, but it sounds like you are looking for something that will cool them down much more. That said, a quick bout in the freezer would do the trick, so I guess it depends on what you are willing to spend!

U-Line still makes the same refrig/ice maker that we pulled out--it is not as functional as the new bev coolers but think having the ice maker off sets lack of shelving... depending on who is buying it might be really cool to have it set up for a tap to go in there--and drill hole through granite-- did not check out those dimensions...

We have an under-counter beverage refrigerator with ice maker in our dry bar. I wanted something for drinks (white wine, beer, soda, mixers, etc.) and also an ice maker. I ended up with the SubZero UC-24C(I). It has a wine rack up top, storage in the door, and shelves for drinks. I love the layout of those things. I really wanted an ice maker because we opted not to get one in our main fridge because we wanted the extra freezer space. My only complaint is that the automatic ice maker fills the bin a little too full and the cubes fall on the floor. To remedy, I usually turn off the automatic feature and just turn it on when the bin needs refilling. Once full, I toss a handful into the sink so they don't fall out every time I get ice out. As for the panel, it doesn't really look integrated at all to me. It only comes with an overlay panel. The only thing I came across that was fully-integrated for under counter was the drawers and I didn't want one whole drawer being a freezer just for the ice maker. Our choice really was the most practical for our needs, however, it kind of bugs me that it is not integrated. We have inset cabinetry and I have a fully-integrated main fridge and dishwasher and I really enjoy the looks of those much better. Here is a link that might be useful: Sub Zero UC-24CI

Well, we did more research and did not like the noise on either perlick or true. We want to stores and had them run the units not in demo mode but with compressor on and the sound was very loud including using a decibel reader. We also talked with several parties and heard the same thing - yes they are great units and keep wine temp perfect and cost like 3,500 each. But they are noisy and have compressors much larger than others and this causes the issue. We went with the GE Monogram stainless steel unit and love it. Yes, not dual temp but keeps temp at perfect 55 degrees and is good for both white and red. Plenty of space as we have 48 bottles in now. When it is not running, completely silent and could not say this for true or perlick. When it runs, just a slight noise from compressor but not bad at all. Best part, it was 1,800 or 1/2 price if true and perlick. I believe it is because GE has been making residential units for along time and have the sound thing down true and perlick come from the commercial world where sound is not an issue at a bar or restaurant.

For ice? But I realize it is not necessary. Will any of the beverage coolers actually make a soda cold enough? I see that GE makes a spacesaver fridge but it only comes in black. I guess I better get back to the drawing board and revamp that bar area. I have found, in my searching, that if you want to build in any of these units that they are expensive.

DH suggested we could use the fridge we bought for $100 from Costco and when it burns out just replace it. It cost 1/6th of the price of the units that we probably should use. He figures we can replace it 6 times and by then we'll be out of the house.

Grrrrrrrr........so typical.

I've had a little Sanyo undercounter fridge that I bought from target for $150 for four years now. It requires 2" of space between the top of it and the bottom of the counter, and the space is about 21" wide. I've had no problems. My bar area has legs, not toekick, so that allows for lots of air circulation which probably helps considerably.

Both the U-Line and Sub Zero beverage centers come from the factory with the ability to reach 34 degrees. I believe a fix can be done with both the Marvel and Kitchenaid pieces to make them go to 34 degrees, but a servicer in required to do the fix.

I replaced a SZ with a GE Monogram. I was going to replace it with another SZ but when I went to look at it the ice maker was 6 inches off the floor. What is that about?! How stupid! Go to GE appliances.com. This is not easy to find on this site as I had trouble finding it every time I was looking at it. I looked for an hour before this post to find it. GE Monogram Bar Refrigerator Module #ZIB524OPSS. Great unit! The ice maker is a fully sealed, suspension unit which pulls out past the edge of the counter top and is waist high. You can use an ice scoop due to this and poeple don't have to stick their hands in the ice to make a drink. I leave the scoop in the bin. I am able to open the door as many times as I want and the temp in the ice bin is unaffected, it does not shrink or get stuck together as it is sealed in the freezer. You are able to turn the ice maker off with a switch and not have to deal with that wire bail handle which the others have. The vent is in the toe kick and then look at all of the specs and the PDF file. The bottom pull out wine shelf holds 36 cans when turned on the side. I love this thing.
