anyone use lcd tv as monitor?

I have a 42 inch TV that claims to be able to be used as a PC monitor in HD via one of the HDMI inputs. I would like to be able to do this for my old HP computer. I have an unused AGP video card slot, but I cannot find any AGP video cards that have an HDMI output, they all have either VGA or the new DVI outputs. The ones with a tv-out are using the low-def s-video connector. If I employed a DVI-HDMI adaptor, I wouldn't have sound. Am I right in assuming that I cannot get an AGP video card that will allow for 5.1 sound? It seems that AGP slots use a back-channel software patch type of utility to get any sound at all, and so it's not capable of higher quality, and to get what I want I'll need to upgrade to a PC-Express type graphics port, which would mean a new motherboard.

Any recommendations appreciated.

I assume since you refer to 'multiple pc's' you have a 4 port KVM switch. Was there any software with this? I always used a 2 port KVM which just required me to hit the scroll lock button twice. How do you swap towers with your switch. What brand and model do you have?

I somewhat found the problem. I turned out the lights and then tured the TV on. Right after powering up, the backlight flahses for about 1/10 of a second then goes out. Then about 4 seconds later, it comes back on, only for about 1/2 of a second. I was poking around on the backlight inverter board at the backlight controller IC. I can't recall the part number, but it's a 20 pin IC. I think it was pin 13 (listed as TC on the datasheet), if I held my scope probe on that pin, the backlight would come on and stay on (only if I held my probe on there while powering it up and keeping it on that pin). Otherwise, if I took my probe off of that pin it would go out instantly. The waveform was that of a sawtooth. I didn't measure frequency or amplitude. After touching up the solder on those pins and components nearby, it seems to be ok now, backlight stays on (without me having to hold the probe on that pin). Yay :)

Thanks for the reply mwkbear.I agree with you about the viewing angle and I have ordered a mounting bracket that will tilt and swivel.I wanted the LCD because we really wanted to keep the size of the screen smaller than the larger plasma tv's.We are going to use a 22 in screen just so we can sit out on the porch and watch golf or Nascar or whatever but we didn't want a tv cart or any wires snaking across the floor.I hope we will be able to see the picture since my wife said the guys just installed the cable and electric. I guess I'll find out in a couple of weeks when we mount the LCD.

Yes, it can be done.

I bought a 19 inch Sharp LCD TV last summer and experimented with feeding a signal from an older laptop to it. The RGB video connection was used sucessfully. (An RGB cable is much lower in cost than a HDMI cable plus many older laptops do not have a HDMI output. The cost range of an HDMI cable is from $45 to $120.)

On the laptop, I set the "display" to both screen and external device.

On the TV, I entered its menu and changed its input to the RGB port.

Both worked well.

I intend to use this combination for a rock-hound club show to demonstrate gem cutting software. I can sit behind a table facing people who come forward to view the display. I can operate the laptop and monitor the results on its screen while the viewers can observe on the larger TV screen facing them. I plan a live demonstration, but as an option, I could also prepare a Power Point presentation and let that run when I take a break.
