My DD has a Kindle fire .. question

my Daughter has a kindle fire tablet ( I think that's what it called ) any way I have a few questions:

1) is there a chance she can get a virus

2) can she install MSE on it

3) can she run a file cleaner like TFC or CCcleaner on it

4) does it get updates

5) can Malwarebites run it

As you can tell I am concerned that she may get a virus etc when she is connected to our internet. Thanks

Yes, it is possible, although not probably that she could get a virus. None of the applications for a PC will work on mobile devices. However, look in the apps available for the Kindle Fire, and there might be an app for virus protection. I know there are for Android devices, but I'm not that familiar with Kindle apps. If there are AV apps, they should be listed among the apps for Kindle devices.

you can not run any programs that are for windows because it is not windows it is a version of linux running on the fire.

she will need to look in the amazon app store for apps for the fire, there are some good antivirus ones if she choses to get one. One of the best is lookout

I have not messed with a fire but know it does have an altered version of android Gingerbread 2.3 on it so not sure if the regular android apps work or not.
she needs to look for kindle fire apps do a google search

For those looking for a "router" for sharing data over cell services, there are additional alternatives to using a USB dongle with a portable router: - A "mobile hotspot", a combined cellular "modem" and router in one small package. Offered by the major carriers. Cost- wise, it's like having another phone, you pay to buy the device and have a (usually 2 year)contract with monthly access and data usage charges. - Most smart phones can operate as a mobile hotspot. Also called "tethering". The advantage with this is that there's nothing additional to buy and (at least with some carriers) no contract is necessary. You can turn it off and on as you wish, and apply usage to the phone plan you already have. The disadvantage is if you're not plugged in, the steady stream of cell data and wifi usage will eat through your battery life. I don't know if a tethered connection can be encrypted. It's convenient for occasional use, with my carrier, it's $ 20 per month prorated for the days it's turned on, so it's like 70 cents per day.

Well, now Chris, that's a whole new can of worms - shopping! We were at a stained glass store looking through the 'leftovers' when she approached the owner and asked if there was any orange coloured stained glass in the store that she would sell at the same price as the pieces in the leftover bin. There was no orange in the leftover bin. We walked out with her holding a beautiful piece one foot square of the brightest orange purchased for $2.00!! You should see this girl bargain at the flea market too. Darn, she's good! Her friends will constantly call and see if she can go shopping with them since she can spot a bargain from a mile. Last week she got a nice sweater at GAP and got the clerk to reduce it by another 15% - it was already reduced by 25% - because there was a small stain on it. The stain came off in the washer. Not bad!

I pre-ordered my Fire when I first heard about it. I have had my K2 for nearly two years and love it. I had a little difficulty at first since I am techie challenged (!). Once I was told about getting a stylus, I went straight out and bought one, and that really made a 100% improvement getting around the Fire-no problems since. I have both my email accts loaded on it and I love seeing all the covers of my books etc. in color-the color on the Fire is really good. For Fire owners they offer an Free APP each day, a really big variety of Apps and 100 Free ones, plus the ones you can purchase. I am hooked on Words With Friends which I play with my DD who lives in another state. I also am hooked on Angry Birds-my family couldn't believe that when I told them, both of these Apps were free. So anyone that is thinking & hesitating about getting the Fire, I do recommend it. I participate in a Kindle forum and have learned so much and also got loads of freebies to read! I know people rave about their Ipads, but it has far more features on it than I would ever use, plus it is so pricey Pat

mudlady- You're sort of comparing apples to oranges. A Kindle Fire OS is much simpler and more limited in function than a PC's OS. You should simply buy the newest Kindle Fire and not worry. I suspect the device will fail physically before you have to worry about the OS being a problem. Amazon wants the Kindle Fire to work well for years to come: they don't want to alienate their ebook-buying customer base by introducing incompatibilities with new models. Finally, in all fairness to Microsoft, their ending of support for XP was no secret. They did maintain it for 12 years and warned people years before about the fact that support would be ending, and they even had three successor systems in release before they did end XP support. I have an old tablet that came with the latest OS available at the time -- XP -- and it's still functional. Just because support ended for that OS doesn't mean the software quits working. The best strategy is to buy current technology with the most current OS and use it. You may want something new in 10 years, but I don't think there is cause for alarm that an HDX 7 will suddenly turn into a lemon.

The Kindle Fire runs a modified version of the Android O/S which is based on Linux. While viruses do exist, they are still relatively uncommon. There is anti-virus software for Android but I don't know if it would run on a Kindle. Frankly, I wouldn't spend a lot of time worrying about it.

There have been a few instances of infected apps making there way into the Android Marketplace, which is policed nowhere nearly as carefully has Apple's App Store. While I haven't researched those specific apps, I wouldn't surprise me if they were the kind of apps someone might download if they were looking to circumvent "the system" (perhaps I should say getting something for free that they should have been playing for).

I also don't know if the Kindle Fire has access to the Android Marketplace or just the Amazon Marketplace. Based on the previous post it appears there is a way to "sideload" apps on a Kindle. Sideloading is a term that refers to installing an application that doesn't come from an "approved" source. This doesn't mean the application is "bad" just not where the vendor wants you to get it from. For for example, I have an Android phone and the "official" source of apps is the Android Marketplace. As it turns out, Amazon gives away a free app every day. I can download, for example, a perfectly legitimate (and free) version of Angry Birds. To get it onto my phone, I have to "sideload" it.

The software you mention are all for Windows based machines and would not run on Android.

Any updates will come from Amazon and likely be pushed to the device.
