Anyone have any tips on using all the ink

in the color cartridge? I am somewhat frugal, do hate to waste it when there is ink there yet, but need to change the black, as I am completely out, wanting to print things for a binder, so need to be clear and readable for these old eyes. Wondering if someone has a suggestion how to use the last of the color ink from the cartridge, or do I HAVE to toss that one? It is somewhat pale, and know I want a new one in soon.

I know a woman who prints stuff for the Senior Center, short lived stuff like today's menu etc.

When she runs our of black she just switches the black cartridge for some other color and the prints menus in a different color.

I don't know what printer she uses.

Albert,

We have a leased high quality copier in our immediate office which the IT people have configured to act as the printer for our independent portion of the network.

I don't know if this would work for you at all, but on the copier when we get an alert regarding low toner (it even estimates how many pages left) we take the toner cartridge out and shake it. After being reinstalled the alert goes out.

Of course there comes a time that no matter what you do empty is empty.

The internet is a wonderful tool and if you use it diligently will give you all the answers you need. I find it is well worthwhile researching where the plants you want to grow come from originally. If they are not from southern USA, locations with a similar climate will do best ie. Southern China or Japan. Plants from tropical climates will do well for a season but then die as the winter is too cold.. Plants which have a different rainfall pattern ie. Mediterranean (wet winter, dry summer) are also tricky, as they get diseased easily. As for containers, really anything that has the right amount of drainage will do. Plastic is good as it is easy to perforate and put in extra holes. Don't try and economize and use ordinary garden dirt for seedlings and young plants. Get (or make) some good quality compost. I know the eastern white pine (Pinus strobus), common in my location, was used in a variety of food, medicinal, and utilitarian ways. I linked in the Plants for a Future article on it - Pfaf is a great resource. I've never tried using white pine but there is a long history of it. Secrets about it? Not a secret but probably uncommon knowledge is that this is the Tree of Peace to the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) nations. The tree has needles in bundles of 5 - just like the 5 original nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. When the 5 nations made peace, they "buried the hatchet" by burying their weapons of war under this tree. How's that tidbit for you? In answer to your question, Jodi...Staples has no way of knowing whether you purchased the ink from them. I, inadvertently, turned in a few Canon cartridges that I didn't buy from them. I received the $2/each credit. Normally, I buy all my ink at Staples and that's the purpose of the rebate program. Technically, one is getting a discount off the next purchase of ink. I think the program is manufacturer sponsored through Staples. I know that my store has gone to great lengths with Canon to keep their pricing equal in all supplier stores in my area. BJ's carries all brands of printer ink...including Canon...and I recently made a point of noting that BJ's, Walmarts and Targets pricing is now equal to Staples shelf prices. With my return cartridge credits...I now get the Canon ink for less than shelf price and that's Staples goal.

People compost for different reasons. For example: They have scrap vegetable matter they don't want to add to a landfill. They want free soil amendments for their garden Note that the first reason focuses on the input - you want to use up excess materials, and the second reason focuses on the output - you need more compost. What works best for you depends on which side of the equation you want to prioritize. Another factor has to do with where you live. If you are in a rural area on a large property then having compost piles on the edge of the property is nothing anyone would notice. In the suburbs piles of vegetation may not be as easily hidden, and in the city you have very little space to begin with and have to factor in rats. Large bins make more sense in suburban yards and tumblers may be the only possible "rat proof" option for the city. However, I agree with Floral_UK - if your definition of "efficient" is least amount of work and most potent end product - slow cold composting is the way to go. Put a bunch of carbon-rich material (leaves, twigs, wood) in a pile or bin and let it sit for a couple of years (longer if there are chunks of wood), and you will end up with a rich, moist hummus that would benefit any type of soil. After all, this is the way Mother Nature does it and this process created all the fertile soil on Earth. If you want fast, then start with the same pile but: Chop everything into small bits Add "green" nitrogen-rich materials as well Make the pile as big as you can - bigger than 1 meter square at the smallest. The bigger it is the faster it will go. A steaming mountain of brown and green material will stay warm even in the winter. And hotter = faster. Turn the pile every couple of weeks You can get usable compost in about six months. But it will have less nutrients because much of the nitrogen has been used up in the process. That, plus the extra labor involved, is the cost of going fast and hot versus slow and cold.

Albert, that is what I am wanting to do,but can't find an area on my printer/scanner to do that sort of thing. sure would be nice to use up all the ink, rather than have to toss the partial cartridge out. Hoping some others will come up with some ideas. I have an HP Deskjet F4180 series printer/scanner, Thanks to anyone!

Hi, shaddy101...

Do you have to change the color cartridge? I had a similar printer that also uses a black cartridge and a tricolor cartridge. I don't think I ever changed both at the same time.

Sorry if I misunderstood the question.

i guess i don't understand this one. mine will tell me the ink is low weeks and weeks before i run out. i just keep using it until it fails to print completely.

Mine does the same thing. Right now, the black is very low and I already have another black cartridge to replace it when it finally runs out. The tricolor cartridge still has quite a bit, so that one will stay in the printer when I change the black.

majikman, and grandms, I have already used 1 black ink cartridge previously, and this color one is from day 1. I am in the midst of a print job, want the colors good and dark, the color is beginning to pale some, and look pitiful along side good black, which is why I thought perhaps I could use the color up before I switch both of them, not always as the same time, but close enuf.
Right now, both are at Walgreens to be refilled, and have new cartridges in for the printing of the job I started. This is not something I would do everyday, the print job is something for special, which is why I wanted good color/contrast.
Also,stargazzer, i would use til gone, but as I said, want the job to look somewhat pro, not cheesy?
Thanks for your concerns, had to let the color cartridge go with some ink in it yet, couldn't wait any longer, maybe I will learn how to do this before we run out again?

I have an idea that maybe just one of the colors was running very low or was out and that caused the colors to dim. I have had that happen. Unfortunately, without separate cartridges for each color, doing what you are doing is about your only recourse.

Now I understand your question and agree with grnadms, that the tricolor cartridge limits your choices.

Unfortunately, letting the color cartridge go with some ink still in it was your best option.

Thanks for your support people, glad to know I am not the only one who needed assistance. It is refreshing to know there are others out there in the same situation, and to those that offer help, please keep doing so, you sure make a bright spot in my day.
The help received here is just not help, it is human touching human, and that is such a good thing, that is why we are are, to help each other!
