XP system restore question

I was reading some FAQ's before attempting a system restore which I've never done. It said that the "windows authentication information" is not restored. Is my PC going to look like a "bootleg" system the next time I attempt to download Windows updates if I do this?

no it will not, all that will happen is that next time you go to the windows update page it may re-run the scan to do the authentication, but it might not even do that.

It is a super simple procedure you just select a date from the calendar that it shows you that has restore points listed and then tell it to restore to that date and time, it will reboot your pc and it will take longer to reboot than normal and it will come up saying it is restoring your pc, so just be patient. these are good guides

If I understand you Shaddy you wish to restore to back before the issue of 'not responding' but after the tech did his work. If there is a restore point created in between those 2 dates then yes you can. However if there is none then you cannot restore to that time frame. This is why I like to suggest (but often forget to do myself sadly) that people should create a restore point before making changes to their computer. Then if those changes do not create the desired effect the computer can be restored to before the changes made. On the issue of 'not responding' take a look in your Event viewer next time this happens. To do so click Start click Control panel click Administrative Tools click Event viewer Now you have a new window, look on the left site and click on System so you can view the results in the right side. Scroll down if needed looking for red error marks or yellow warning marks. Double click on any of these for further information. Much of it you will not understand but there will be a link there and if you click that you will be taken to the Microsoft site and hopefully an answer to your problem. If not then report back here with the error number and any pertinent comments they make.

I remember having this happen to me some time back. I still don't know why, but I booted into SafeMode and was able to do the System Restore. You might give that a try and see if it works for you.

well you do need to be updating your IE to IE 7 at least very soon because support for 6 is ending or has already ended and you will be with out security updates for it so that is critical. I would remove aol then try to re-install it if you just insist on having it, I try to steer people off of aol because it is such a problem child and it really is not needed. as zep said we need more info on exactly what is happening when it is happening and what error messages you are getting.

Here is the skinny, Get yourself to the site raven suggested. If you are infected with System Check it is important that you do not delete any files from your Temp folder or use any temp file cleaners. This is because when the infection is installed it will delete shortcuts found in various locations and store backups of them in the %Temp%\smtmp folder. It does this so that you when try to launch a program from your start menu, none of your shortcuts will appear and thus making you think that your computer has a serious problem. Therefore, you do not want to delete any of the files in your Temp folder as it will remove the backups that we will use later in the guide to restore your Windows Start Menu. To make matters worse, recent variants of this family have been know to install the TDSS or ZeroAccess rootkits as well. These rootkits will attempt to stop you from using security programs that may help you to remove this infection. Good luck. Joe

OMG - it worked!!! At least I think it did. Don't cheer yet, Shaddy, I may have a corrupted browser, but it seemes to be ok for the moment. I'm still experimenting to see if everything is working, but at least I didn't kill my poor PC.

J, if you find your browser is corrupt you may have to just reinstall it over again that should cause a repair, are you using IE or firefox? And I am already cheering for you because you did take that big step and try something new!

Raven, I was afraid you'd say I had to re-install. I only use FF, and that's where I was having problems. It kept saying "Server can't find..." and at times couldn't even find Google. I think the restore may have fixed the problem, but haven't been able to get to PC to try it.

Elsewhere I posted a question re installing the latest version of FF, which I hope you'll answer--I am so afraid of messing something up royally!
