Motel free internet problem

I use my laptop with a wireless connection with my PC at home and everything works. I recently went on vacation and had problems everywhere I went. The best connection was at a motel that required me to enter a number code before I could use their free internet. I could receive my mail but could not send any. At other motels, where no pass code was required, I was able to log on but I couldn't access anything on the web or my mail. Any suggestions as to why I had this problem? This was really a bummer because I was looking forward to using my laptop to keep up with my mail and also to search for directions, great restaurants, etc.

If by chance you have set your networking to a fixed IP, or perhaps fixed the DNS to your local isp. That would screw it up.
You'd need to set it to automatic and my experience is once set to fixed even automatic wont work the first time until you prod it with clear dns, etc and discover ip.

Another thing could possibly be a firewall settings.

What SMTP (outgoing) server were you using?

Unless your ISP has a specific outgoing server that allows you to connect when you're outside their network, that was your problem.

Most hotel broadband connections, wired or wireless, don't have their own mail servers. Thus you have to have one of your own that will let you logon securely from a random connection to the Net.

Try using a account at Yahoo, Hotmail or log onto ISP online account and send through them.

I am afraid you have one of the rogue infections and if that is the case please do NOT run any type of programs especially any that would remove any type of files especially temp files because these rogues hide your files as temp files and if you run anything you run the risk of deleteing your actual files. To fully remove this nasty from your pc please go to the link I am providing, register there, and post a new thread in the area I link you to. I just checked the way my e-mail accounts are set up, and under "server" is listed "any account available". I never have trouble accessing my e-mails on either my isp's server or gmail's server. I have used wi-fi at motels and campgrounds (and even on individual's unsecured networks) and never had a problem. I use Outlook Express as my client.

I have directv...now they are owned by att....I was TRYING not to have all the eggs in one basket, as I have never been thrilled with att, but soon I suppose they will scarf up Hughesnet !! Att is the ONLY cell service with enough coverage for DH when he travels the hinterlands for his job. We have been experimenting with unplugging the equipment in various ways to see if something is sucking up data overnight. We lost a little bit last night with the thing completely unplugged!! How is that possible?

You didn't say what motel, but I can say my experience ranging from the Hyatt Regency to the Holiday Inn Express is that the WiFi always works, albeit it is free access at the HI Express but cost extra at the $200+ per night hotel room rate Hyatt, go figure.

I think I have had to tell XP to look for networks and then pick one before I was able to connect to the Internet via the motel's network.

Thanks for the suggetions. I have to find a local motel with free wireless so I can sit in the parking lot, log on, and test any changes I make. Interesting, my home DSL comes from TDS.

jerry ny, Yes, you have to tell xp what network:-)

I stayed at cheap motels with WIFI and search the net I had to use Yahoo or my online mail account with my ISP. Only way I could send emails.
