Repeat from another thread-- Did I get a scare when I went on my computer. I got all set and turned on my computer as usual. I can't remember if the welcome screen came but I ended up with a black screen with a dialog box saying: C\windows\system 32\config\systemprofile\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on the computer or on a network. Check to make sure the disk is properly inserted or that you are connected to the Internet or your network and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information may have been moved to a different location Then the message disappeared when I clicked OK and a black desktop with white blank pages in place of the icons were there and the start button with a few of the system tray items. I didn't have the option to shut down (that I remember) so pressed the power button and it blinked so I hit it again or I did the Ctrl, Alt, Delete and the computer booted up with the welcome screen and came up normal. WHEW! That is all I need? What do you think that was all about? Could it have been caused by the updates I did yesterday before I shut down? Windows 7 64bit

The problem is a corrupted area of the hard drive. The remedy is to run chkdsk /r If you can't run it within Windows, try Safe Mode. If that doesn't work, run it from the Recovery Console. Any more BSOD's while doing the above and you need to save as much as possible and do a clean install.

You can run some basic scans that might repair something but usually blue screen is a driver file that needs reinstalled or updated.. Look in Device Manager to see if any warnings? From your Command Prompt (admin) ChkDsk /Scan DISM /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth SFC /ScanNow You can get to F8 from any power button... click Restart while holding the Shift key. Or just add it to your boot manager with this command.... Bcdedit /set (bootmgr) displaybootmenu yes (((( those brackets above are the Curly brackets )))]]] that don't seem to show right here when posted. then go to MSConfig boot tab and set the timeout to maybe 5 seconds.
