Crazy to mix dark and light HWF stains?

The collective wisdom here is amazing, and has been really helpful as we go through our building process. Now we have a novel idea we're thinking about and we'd like to see if anyone has comments, or maybe even pictures.

Our staircase is red oak and we're choosing the rest of the flooring material and stain now. We really like the look of dark stains, but we've read many recommendations to avoid them due to upkeep (we have cats and toddlers) and so we've decided to go with 5" plank white oak, probably natural or maybe a light stain, for the downstairs.

Thinking that it might be hard to match the red oak stairs and the natural stain on white oak anyway, we had the idea of going with a dark stain (Jacobean or Ebony) for the stairs and the upstairs landing (the upstairs bedrooms are carpeted). The staircase is attached to the foyer, which has views of the main living area, formal LR, and dining room. So, if we do this, the dark-stained staircase will be right next to natural-finished white oak.

Is this crazy? Has anyone ever done this? Any pictures?

In case it matters, the overall interior design is very contemporary.

Thanks in advance for any input and good luck with all of your projects!
