Best price/brand -Refrigerator and freezer drawers

Does anyone have any advice on refrigerator and freezer drawers? What brands have the best price point and are most reliable?

What are the dimensions needed? Can I place them in a cabinet space that currently holds a reg. mini (under counter) fridge or do I need to totally reconfigure the space?

We went w/ the KitchenAid in panel ready. We considered those and the Jenn-Air since there didn't seem to be any special reason why the Jenn-Air cost more.

I believe there are also more expensive offerings by SubZero and Summit (although those might be just fridge/just freezer?) but we didn't look at those b/c I just wanted something basic.

Ours haven't been installed yet, so I can't answer the other questions :)

What dbl oven are you going with and how tall are you and your family ??? Basically you don't want the control panel top of a dbl oven to be above 60-65". This puts the bottom of the lower oven approx. 14"-18" above the floor. Subtract the 4" toekick and you're at 10 -14" left for a warming drawer. Remember the bottom or business end of the drawer is at the bottom , closer to the 4" toekick than the upper 18". Bending down to retrieve or place a plate of food or pan is a pain and just try serving a casserole from down there. Warming drawers work best when placed just under the countertop. I'll even concede they can work below the top drawer at 28" off the floor. Even here the top of a double oven's control panel will be at 7 feet above the floor. Not workable for anyone save pro basketball players. As to what: These are pretty simple. They all USED to be a metal box with a broiler element. Now , those still are available, but the "new" style has convection heating. Either an element encased in a fan or simply a fan to circulate the air with the old school element. The offerings from BSH - Thermador, Gaggenau and Bosch have a heating bed (think floor tile warmers) in the bottom of their drawers and often a fan. Miele's is similar. These are also more like a shelf than a drawer as there really aren't sides to the drawer. GE Monogram and Wolf's offerings are more like a traditional drawer (with sides) and offer fitted containers with lids. Dacor's has sides but no containers. Most these days have timers - which I think is critical. The other major thing to look for would be how easily it takes a panel - which you are not interested in. I have owned T'dor in the past - going back to the 70's. I currently have Dacor and Miele. All have been fine - there really isn't a performance difference that's worth paying for.

Hi Xedos and thanks for your reply. Too bad about the Bosch. It seems those in the UK want small undercounter freezers more than North Americans. I really don't want an under counter freezer loaded with features. I would be happy with a quiet one that had a door that opened into sturdy shelves that I could put bins on to slide out. I would prefer bins to be included, but would be content without. I don't want an ice maker or any bells and whistles, and I wasn't asking for fancy drawers. I don't need rock bottom price for this small freezer space, just not something that costs a few thousand or more. I may just get the Summit one even if the reviews on these boards are iffy. Maybe I could put in extra insulation to damped any sound. There just doesn't seem to be much choice in under counter freezers. Unless, I am missing one? Carol

@willinak Janet, it's not illegal, not fraudulent, just not well known, and yes I don't like it either. Well, it's probably more "black hat" than "illegal." Still, it is questionable to sell something you don't own. The Google results page belongs to Google, not to the consultant who is selling the first result slot to Dave. Promising to create a website that will be easily searchable by Google is one thing, promising the first slot is something else. People who sell things they don't own are also more likely to run off with your money without delivering, as poor Dave has found out. The "foo-foo dust" your dentist sprinkles has another name--spamdexing. Basically, it's possible to fool Google (or other search sites) into thinking a website is extremely popular and thus get a higher slot in the results page. Google then scrambles it's algorithms to prevent this, and the spamdexers adjust their tactics as well, and charge your dentist for more "dusting." All good comments - thanks! 1. I did turn off the ice maker, but that doesn't change anything. It does make ice when it is on, so that is good...at least it works. 2. The idea that it could be the fan ramping up to recover the temp is a good one. Thanks. 3. Evaporator fan motor is the best guess at the moment. Bearing or not, I'd just replace the motor. 4. Obviously, with COVID-19 and being high risk, I can't have anyone in the house at the moment...which is making my ability to have a tech debug the thing a bit difficult. 5. In the meantime, I did get a new evaporator fan motor that I will install after some of the frozen food is eaten - but it is quite a hassle as it requires one to remove all shelves, all drawers, remove the back panel, etc... -mark

Anyone else? Beagles, did you get yours in and are you happy? We are thinking of doing custom panel frige/freezer drawers (KitchenAid) for the wetbar of our basement.

I thought I read somewhere that with custom panels the panel won't be flush with the other cabinetry...this may have been for a regular under-counter refrigerator, not drawers...can't really remember now. I am hoping to get a very sleek, built in look and conceal the refrigerator. Thanks!

I can speak a bit on the cabinet issue...it depends wholly on the type of cabinetry you have. If you have inset cabinetry, it is possible you have have to cut a notch into the drywall to allow room for the water fittings; other types of cabinetry should allow for flush cabinet panels with the rest of your cabinetry

We did not get ours yet. They are in storage at the appliance store and will be for a while most likely, since they are still in the stages of pouring foundation and water proofing basement walls :)

The drawers darn well better be 100 percent flush w/ the counter though b/c I made pretty clear that the appliance store that I wanted it to be impossible to find any of my appliances in the kitchen at all!

beagle - you'd better get with your cabinet supplier and designer - They are the ones who really control how integrated (flush) your appliances will be. The appliance seller can advise you but they no control over how the manufacturers make the units or how those units are implemented in the field.

The easiest to integrate appliance can be sunk before leaving the dock if a rookie or idiot cabinet designer only leaves 24" of depth for an appliance that requires 24 1/8" or 25" or they don't see to it that electrical line is in the right place.

Thanks antss. I've stressed the integration w/ my cab maker but I will make sure again he knows that they must be 100 percent integrated. For the amount of time it is taking just to get final drawings on my kitchen, he better be doing it right!
