WANTED: All The Way From Iceland!!!

A big Thank You to Netla for a wonderful box filled with Icelandic goodies. It didn't take that long to get here either.

The catagories were:

Enjoy your coffee

Toppings for your bread

Satisfy your sweet tooth

Spice up your life

Try something new

First is a spice mix made in Iceland called The Spice of Life and it seems like it would be good on everything. She said to try it on grilled sandwiches and french fries. I can't wait. There is also Icelandic salt which is made from pure seawater that has been filtered thru the lava of Reykjanes near where she lives. It's actually low sodium. I can't wait to try it.

Next is a medium roast coffee with a hint of chocolate and vanilla my two favorite flavors. To go with the coffee is Icelandic Schnapps which is also known as "Black Death"(it's flavored with caraway seed). Her instructions for Happy Coffee are...Put a quarter in the bottom of a coffee cup pour in some schnapps and top with coffee.I'll definitely be trying that soon.

I'm now the proud owner of Icelandic chocolate. Well for a short time anyway. The packaging on the bar is beautiful. There is also Djupur which are pieces of licorice coated with milk chocolate and a thin shell of sugar. They are delicious. My son and I opened them before taking a picture. There is also RjomaKuhur which are chocolate coated caramels. We waited until after the picture to open those. They won't last long either.

I've also got wonderful toppings for my bread. Maybe I'll bake tonight. The first is Canadian Honey which is very popular there. Netla suggested mixing it with butter as a topping for bread. I would have never thought of that. On the homemade side I am the proud recepient of Orange Brandy Jelly with slices of kumquat made by Netla herself. Did you make the crocheted(sp?) tops on the jars too? They're beautiful. There is a honey spoon which can be used for honey or jam.

It is very cool.

There is a tiny triangular cheese grater which I was desperately needing since I broke mine awhile back.

An last but not least a cookbook called Cool Dishes with very interesting recipes. Right now I'm looking at Cocoa Soup. Can't wait to read the rest.

Wow! I'm jealous. All those "cool" things from Iceland. Nobody can duplicate that! And the jelly sounds wonderful. Can't wait for the pix.

I'm getting an error whenever I try to go to your member page (Gateway something...). I still have all but one (sunrise surprise is out) black-eyed susan vine in small quantities except I still have plenty of the susie white-eyed, and I can give you all the millet I have. All the agastache is still available; Apache Sunset, Apricot Sprite, and Tango were all a soft golden/peach/orange/pinky blend in my garden, very pretty. And I still have Lemon Queen, too. And because the email came from gardenweb and I didn't have a copy sent to me, I don't recall what I picked from your list already, other than the poppies. Can you please refresh my memory? When you say Safflower feeder, I'm going assume a standard tube feeder. I had the same problem but with House Finches rather than HOSPs. I have a four-station tube feeder with metal rods that protrude through the tube to provide a perch at each station on opposite sides of the tube. Try wrapping some type of mesh around the tube. The perch rods will stick through the mesh. Use cable ties to hold the mesh in place. I wanted to try something with about a 1/2" grid that would allow the birds to grab seeds but not shovel the seeds out like the HFs were doing. I have a pond so I ended up using a remnant of the nylon netting I use in the Fall to keep the leaves out. About a 12" long by 8" tall section covered the openings. The nylon flexes so I assumed the birds could reach in and grab a seed. The cardinals would land and stare at the feeder but wouldn't touch it. After a week, I started cutting slits in the netting to make the openings larger. The cardinals finally gave it a try and could grab the seed out of the feeder. The dees and titmice have no problems, either. I have seen HFs on occasion throw seed out but it's rare. Much nicer filler the feeder up once a week rather than once a day.

I'm dying of laughter. Good laughter - Nancy, here we all are, busting our buns shopping on ebay, perusing posts to glean hints about likes and dislikes, you know, the whole stress thing, and you have put together a perfectly balanced and awesome box right from your own work. I love it. I'm jealous! Janet, RIP, had sent me some items from American Spoon in my first ever swap box. I still remember that sour cherry jam! I did some wallet damage when I was in that store last summer and I had to restrain myself! The box itself, with that painting, is incredible. Y'all are warned not to set foot in that store unless you want to be major overwhelmed (but you'll have a big grin on your face).

I'm at my sister's house now, briefly, but I wanted to check in to make sure the vase arrived intact. I'm so glad nothing was broken! I knew Linda liked blue, and so I thought the vase would go in her house. I've never been to RÃ¶ckenwageners, even though it is less than a mile from my house. I've driven past it many times and wanted to go, but it looked expensive. However, I learned from the cookbook that they serve breakfast, and so I might have to go there for that. I couldn't resist photographing the first recipe - German apple pancakes, and I kept a copy of that recipe so that I can make them. BTW, the asparagus spear was just an asparagus spear to me - I'm a bit slow to catch on. I chose the book because it is from a restaurant close to my house! It appears to have a lot of good recipes with mainly German-French roots (like me), but with a bit of Pacific Rim sprinkled in. I'm so glad the vase was a hit - I was a bit worried about that, although I really liked it myself! Thanks for posting the pictures, Ann! Lars

Netla, great package. Love the candy bar wrapping, the Spice of Life sounds like something I could go for, but.... the orange brandy with sliced kumquats really gets my mouth watering. Enjoy it, Tracey!

Cool things! Literally! It's been pretty darn hot in our neck of the woods, so I am sure Tracey will enjoy cooling off with such delectible items. I take that you Icelandians have a sweet tooth, yes? Well, ummmmmmsss coming from me.

You noticed, even the packaging looks cool and refreshing.

I love the crocheted toppers. Will make little coastery thingies after the eats are gone. They will be gone soon I'm sure.

"Black Death" and "Happy Coffee." Hum, I's a gonna thonk on that one a little.

I agree it sounds so cool to receive a package from Iceland. Tracey that is the neatest way for your son to learn about another country. Way cooler then just looking at a Globe. Those licorices sound so good. Netla, will you share the recipe for the jelly please?

I'll try to write down a recipe for the jam and post it soon. I don't really use a recipe, and usually just slosh whatever strong liquor I have on hand into the jam...

The coffee is made by a specialty store and is packed while still hot after roasting and grounding, so should be very fresh. My mother recommended it, as I'm not really a coffee expert.
The nice packaging for the chocolate is only sold in the gift shop of the Icelandic National Museum and a few other specialty stores. I thought it would be nice to send that instead of the regular packaging. The girls in the picture are wearing national costumes. Unfortunately I forgot to add the postcard I got from the gift shop - Tracey, you'll get it in the mail one of these days.
I'm glad you like the jelly - it's the first time I use brandy in it, but I have previously used whisky which is also good. I didn't really like it with vodka - not enough flavour. I don't use a recipe as such, but will set one down and post on the forum before long.
The jar tops are indeed my own work - I crochet like mad when I watch TV and it was nice to find a new recipient for some of the stuff I have been making (the family are beginning to get a haunted look when I hand them a package...)
The book is full of recipes from Iceland. You can find many of them (or variations anyway) on my website.

Netla , what I great parcel! A parcel from so far away is very special, love that you did an Icelandic theme. Long ago I received a swap from Switzerland, it was so wonderful having things I'd never seen and the fact that the ingredients/ instructions etc were in a different language made it even more special.

Could you give a bit more detail on the Coffee? Sounds like something that might give that nice pick-me-up on a cold Winter day! I like Schnapps and have not had any in years. I wonder if we can find the Black Death in the USA?
