How do you drain your dishes?

I have a dishwasher, but for years I have kept a narrow Rubbermaid dish drainer in one of my double sinks to drain the few dishes I do by hand.

I wish I could find one like I have (mine is cracking after many years). Its plastic and about half the size of a regular dish rack, and it's designed to rest on the edges of the sink and hang down in the sink a little. Hope this makes sense. (It doesn't sit in the bottom of the sink.)

I cannot find these anymore, so I was wondering what others do for the extra things you don't want to put in the dishwasher.

Oh Oh I had one of those for years too! I loved it. I had to just switch to a regular sized one that sits in the bottom of the 1 double sink.

What I do is just get a plastic coated wire grate for the bottom of the sink that fits. I just hand wash the item (I don't do the fill up the sink thing) I just wash with my soap and scubber and rinse. Then I just turn it over onto the wire thing and let it air dry. Doesn't take long and so what if it sits there and more clean things get piled in thru out the day,,they all dry eventually.
I use the small side of the sink for doing this washing bit and disposal etc. and then when it's rinsed it goes on the "clean" side to dry. I'm not great at describing this, but I think you can get my drift. Would have like to have seen what you had. Sounds good.

I have a grand total of one planting w/o a drain hole. It's a very shallow penjing arrangement. That it's shallow allows me to easily determine how wet/dry the soil is at the bottom of the 1-1'2" deep tray, which knowledge I consider mandatory. I also use only distilled water, water from the dehumidifiers, or snowmelt to irrigate with to eliminate salt build-up, which is a death sentence in containers w/o holes. Finally, I use fish emulsion fertilizers to help guard against the accumulation of unused fertilizer salts. The planting is in its 5th or 6th year and doing well, but you can see by my outline that you cannot treat a planting w/o a drain hole like traditional container plantings and expect it to be problem free. DH enjoys the final product when I've done a tablesetting. He does think I am a bit nuts while I am mapping out a table, but oh well, everyone has some hobby, no? That said, he doesn't approve of the cabinets in my office being filled with heavy dishes. He keeps warning me that the cabinets are going to just fall off of the wall sooner or later. I store all of my red dishes for Valentines, 4th of July and Christmas overflow in the cabinets over my desk in the office. Also in the office cabinets are my stacking plates, 20 Thanksgiving plates (Kohl's sale last Fall), 20 W/S white pasta bowls, 20 square white salad plates. Oh, 2 trifle bowls as well. Then there is the pantry closet - I store my "Autumn" china - service for 12, missing some pieces, which my DM gave me. The china was her wedding china so I love to use it as soon as the Summer ends. Lenox Holiday China - full service for 20 plus extra dinner plates stored in closet in D/R. Serving pieces are being stored at DM as she has a full basement crying out for dish storage. Lenox "Amythest", my wedding china is stored in the china closet in the D/R. Full service for 16. Everyday white W/S bistroware is in the kitchen cabinets - service for 16. Do you see where I'm going with this? I am not accounting for all of the stemware, serving dishes and the like which I have accumulated over the years:). Most are in the pantry closet, but many are stashed here and there!. I don't purchase everything in sets. My Thanksgiving plates from Kohls have a leaf pattern on the edge, so I picked colors from the leaves and purchased accompanying solid color plates to complete the place settings. Also, I've found with using white dishes, I can play with the table a bit more putting in different whites or colors if I like. No basement in our home, so I have made creative use of just about every other space, conventional or not. I just gave DB and DSIL my Mikasa (forget the pattern name) dishes as they have the same pattern, and I replaced the Mikasa with the bistroware which is much more versitile for me. Then there are the linens, oh my. I have so many tablecloths and napkins it is sick. But remember all of these were collected over 20 some odd years. I love to do nice tablesettings and to do them, a gal must have the things that are needed! We host all of the holidays at our home, so I guess I can somewhat justify having all of the necessary items to entertain 10-20 people at a time. I actually thought I had a dish problem until I found this forum. Can't wait to read more responses. Great topic!

One of the reasons to *not* rinse/prewash dishes is if you use an enzyme detergent it needs the food particles to work better. It'll etch glass and stuff if it doesn't have the food particles. I can't explain it well, but it's easy research for a more thorough explanation. Most just recommend scraping the dishes (and really, who wouldn't?!) then into the DW. I haven't had a dishwasher for more than 30 years but I'm starting to miss it. I would get grossed out though when it left stuff on it. When washing by hand and using a good soap it gets clean. Sure, you just put it back in and rewash but it still bugs me. It also bugs me to see people leave dirty dishes in the DW for a week before washing them. Argh! If it takes a week to fill it, you should have a smaller DW or use a top rack only feature. This is what impresses me about the F&P Dish Drawers. And geez, I can wash a few dishes FAR faster than an hour or two for a dishwasher! LOL And when you compare the time to load the dishwasher vs washing, it's pretty close. Time's not a factor. It's the hassle of washing them. I soak my dishes and a quick swish, rinse in HOT water and into the drainer to dry. Putting them away is comparable to time in a DW. Oh, and one thing I found out quickly, the way you load it makes a big difference. You have to learn how the water sprays and make sure it's not blocked for effective washing.

I haven't owned a dish drainer in years--in fact not since we moved into this house almost 12 years ago. Before that, the drainers we had were always really ugly, so perhaps that fed my aversion to them. We hand wash pots and pans, stoneware, and some glassware, but there are seldom more than a few pieces unless we're entertaining. We have always just put a towel on the counter. With the new kitchen, we had runnels installed in the counter and we have a grid in the sink. We place dishes directly on the runnels to dry, and if there are just a few small items, we dry them on the sink grid. So now, we don't even use the towel, unless the 'load' is particularly large.

I don't use a dish drainer. I hand wash and let the dishes dry in the dishwasher. Once every 3-4 weeks, I let the dishwasher runs (with dishes in it) to cleanse it and keep the pump & seals from drying out.

When our Rubermaid dish drainer like the one you describe expired we replaced it with a simplehuman compact dishrack. We have a single bowl sink so we keep it on the counter, but it would fit into one bowl of a double bowl sink too.

I found one on e-bay pretty much like what I want, but it looks a little flimsy and I'm not sure of the dimensions.

Seems a little overpriced too.

I tried to fix my Rubbermaid with the glue gun, but it didn't hold. I emailed Rubbermaid to ask about it too.

We leave a lot of things out to dry in a drainer -- things that are too delicate for the DW or that are too big to be worth wasting the space. They dry better in the air than with a towel. Sometimes I know I am going to need something again soon, so I don't want to wait for the dw to run again. I also drain greens and herbs in the drainer sometimes. I knew myself well enough that I wouldn't put the thing under the sink all the time, and after spending $$$ to remodel, I couldn't stand the idea of leaving an icky rubber drainer and mat out all the time!

Our solution: I found a pretty drainer that looks nice enough that it is actually a plus, not a minus, on the counter. It was ridiculously expensive for a drainer -- about $51, I think -- so I asked for that as my Chanuka present that year. Actually, I think it was worth the money not to spoil the look of our kitchen. It came from Smith & Hawken.

It doesn't have a tray under it, but thanks to Miracle Cloths, even that actually turned into a plus, because the water that drips onto the counter is usually just enough to wet the cloth to wipe the counters after I finish the dishes.

I think that Lillian Vernon has a similar but smaller item, and I have seen several stainless steel ones.
