Looking at Bottom Mount Freezer, but Single or French Doors?
Comments (8)We went last night to Costco, Lowe's, and a smaller local appliance store (not big box). Costco didn't have the Whirlpool models on site, but we played with a lot of fridges at the other 2 places. I think we're going to go with French door, as the single door models we saw didn't have the freezer configuration my husband prefers. We both like the solid plastic baskets as opposed to open wire baskets. He also liked the Samsung's "auto-open" tray that pulls open with the freezer drawer so you don't have to pull it open yourself. The one thing we noticed, which chipshot points out, is that many of the French door models don't close well when you close the right door first and then the left door. The Samsung, the Maytag, and some higher end ($2000+) models had some built-in feature that barely "popped" the right door so it shut again, as opposed to staying open when you closed the left door second. Still, I think I'm neurotic enough to either check every time or always close the left side first. Hald: I think you make an excellent point about food loading/unloading that we didn't realize until last night while standing in front of both a french door and a single door model. The single door model completely blocks off using the island as a loading/unloading spot, since the angle of the door and where I'd be standing means I can only use the counter next to the fridge. Thanks again everyone! I think now we're thinking it's either the Samsung French Door or Whirlpool French Door given the Costco return policy....See MoreFrench door or bottom freezer single door? Comments (7)Yes palimpset, we're almost to the finish line on this reno! I guess we all kind of know that appliances don't appear to be made quite as well as they used to be - however they are more energy efficient, which is a tick in the plus column. We have what I believe is close to a 25 year old simple top freezer Kenmore refrigerator in our garage that my sister in law gave us 7 years ago which holds sodas, beer, wine, extra frozen meat and Costco buys. It continues to whirr along month after month like a little champ. There are definitely more options today and we are so very lucky to have informed access to them all. As much as I love the look and feel of the French door design, for me it's just not that ergonomic unless you have your fridge in a spot that's conducive to opening /using it from the front as opposed to the sides. Also, I realized that to open the great deli drawer (which I really like) requires that both doors be opened, which in the great scheme of things is probably not all that big of a deal, but still requires one more step. That all having been said, I'm still considering the French door style, so go figure. :-)...See MoreDo you like your single door bottom freezer fridge?
Comments (22)Nope. There just isn't enough freezer space. UGH!! With the pull-out basket, you really lose a lot of space as compared to the old, freezer-on-top, shelf but no pull-out style. Granted, you have to have a pull-out with a bottom freezer (a shelf wouldn't work well), but, it's such a waste of space. If I had a separate freezer elsewhere in the house, I wouldn't mind so much, but as it is, I feel *very* limited in how much freezer space I have -- and that's for just one or two people. If I had to feed a whole family with such a small freezer, I'd really find it difficult -- unless we ate out a whole heck of a lot (actually, I'd just HAVE to put in at least a small chest freezer somewhere in the house!). <:>Um, yes, I *do* like to cook. And buy stuff on sale. Hence the need for a decent-sized freezer. ;P So you might want to consider whether the freezer space will be sufficient for you. I didn't realize how much less space I would have, even though I chose the largest fridge/freezer I could -- *and*, it's larger than my old freezer-on-top, yet holds less frozen food. Sigh....See More36" bottom freezer Thermador refrigerator - french door or single??
Comments (5)French door fridges, like the side by sides before them, are designed for kitchens with narrow aisle, or, as in Stan's case, not too narrow aisles which you don't want to crowd. A lot of people dislike the two doors. They look cool in the store, but can get bothersome when you're opening and shutting all the time. It helps if you can organize your most used things to be on the side that opens first. Organized well is highly subjective. I want the greatest adjustability and the least amount of specialization. One thing to keep in mind is that the top of the door on the opening edge may not be the warmest spot in your new fridge. It isn't on my Miele. There's cold air coming in at the top, which counters any warmth from opening or heat rising. I don't know if there's a butterbox altogether, but if there isn't, adding a covered butter dish is easier than choosing your fridge for that one thing. BTW, if your kitchen isn't usually hot, you might be interested in a butter bell, which is kept on the counter and uses water to seal it. The butter is soft and spreadable always, and if you use a stick of butter in a week, it doesn't go bad. It's been very popular in these forums. Beyond that, which interior you like best is really up to you. If you google-images the model numbers you're looking at and "interior" you should get plenty of pictures and be able to tell what it's like if you can't see it in person....See MoreRelated Professionals
