I said I wasn't going to buy one, but I am almost certain I will get a Kindle. I don't need all the extra fancy abilities to do internet stuff--all I need is a reader. That means I will probably get the one for $139. However, I saw a very poor specimen of the Kindle on display at Best Buy and I have some questions. The "sample" was a plastic shell with a printed page that looks like a real page, and does nothing. It was so securely tethered to the display I really couldn't feel the "heft" of it. I expect the 7 inch readers are all pretty light but Kindle has a third--expensive--size that is almost the size of a sheet of printer paper. I think I would appreciate the size because I would choose a fairly large font and still have many lines of text displayed. I am afraid the frequency of page turns of a 7 imch reader might be annoying. The large one is 10 ounces heavier than the 7 inch Kindle but I read curled up in a recliner and I possibly could rest it in my lap. I would appreciate any input from owners of eBooks.

Hi Nancy,
I have both the small Kindle3 (the WiFi model for $139 that you mentioned) and the DX, that's about 10.5 X 7 inches. I do like the increased "acreage" of the DX, however the number of page turns don't bother me on the small one and I do use one of the larger fonts. The page turns are much faster on the K3 and the page turn button is almost silent.

What I like about the smaller one is that it can travel easily in my purse.

There is a website called kindleboards.com that is packed with information and help.

Thanks for the info. I agonize over EVERY decision I make, and even more so on costly purchases. I am going to the kindleboards site now.

Depends on how you have the scroll button set in the control panel. I have arthritis in my hands which makes it hard to double-click so I have mine set to double-click. If you're using firefox the NoSquint extension enables you to set the size you want once then remembers it the next time you go to that page.

I agree that it's important to not only read the description of any free book you're considering, but the reviews of it--so you won't waste your time on the less good ones. Amazon e-authors have the option of offering several free days for their books in each 3 month period. Especially those who have a series going do that, to introduce people to their 'line'. So you really have to keep on top of things. I've had my kindle for 2 years now (or is it 3?) and I think I've only spent about $25 on buying books for it--there really are a lot of good free ones out there.

Well, I did it! I read forever and did enough hand wringing so I finally took the plunge (after I read the Amazon return policy) and ordered the WiFi for $139. NY State happilly added its 8% tax so I really spent $150.12. It will arrive on or after Nov.1 so now I am deciding what I will choose as my first book--I am going to splurge on a current best seller. If I had made decisions this carefully in 1969, I would not have ended up divorced in 1980. Now THAT was a costly mistake ;-)

there are tons of free books for kindle, I have my kindle for pc library full of free books I have downloaded from amazon and feedbooks.com both offer the kindle format.
Just go to the amazon kindle area and do a search for free kindle books watch out because sometimes ones that cost find their way into the list.

Thanks to all--I am counting the days until delivery. I am certain I will read a lot of free books but for the first one on the Kindle, I want to celebrate with a current best seller. For old books, I am about to look up Eudora Welty.

Amazon just announced yesterday that there will be 2 new features coming soon...you will be able to download newspapers and magazines and will also be able to lend a book to another kindle user for 14 days.

After you've had a chance to play with your new Kindle, it would be great if you took a few minutes to review it for the other members of this forum. Doesn't have to be anything fancy, just general impression and what you like and dislike about the reader.

If you are interested in free books you might also want to check out Project Gutenberg. They have 33,000 titles although much of their content tends to be older works but if you're interested in the classics, the price is right!
