I said I wasn't going to buy one, but I am almost certain I will get a Kindle. I don't need all the extra fancy abilities to do internet stuff--all I need is a reader. That means I will probably get the one for $139. However, I saw a very poor specimen of the Kindle on display at Best Buy and I have some questions. The "sample" was a plastic shell with a printed page that looks like a real page, and does nothing. It was so securely tethered to the display I really couldn't feel the "heft" of it. I expect the 7 inch readers are all pretty light but Kindle has a third--expensive--size that is almost the size of a sheet of printer paper. I think I would appreciate the size because I would choose a fairly large font and still have many lines of text displayed. I am afraid the frequency of page turns of a 7 imch reader might be annoying. The large one is 10 ounces heavier than the 7 inch Kindle but I read curled up in a recliner and I possibly could rest it in my lap. I would appreciate any input from owners of eBooks.

Hi Nancy,
I have both the small Kindle3 (the WiFi model for $139 that you mentioned) and the DX, that's about 10.5 X 7 inches. I do like the increased "acreage" of the DX, however the number of page turns don't bother me on the small one and I do use one of the larger fonts. The page turns are much faster on the K3 and the page turn button is almost silent.

What I like about the smaller one is that it can travel easily in my purse.

There is a website called kindleboards.com that is packed with information and help.

Thanks for the info. I agonize over EVERY decision I make, and even more so on costly purchases. I am going to the kindleboards site now.

for some reason the direct link to the pdf is not working for me, if anyone else runs into that problem this is the link to the page it resides on, you can then right click on the actual pdf link and choose save link as to save it to your pc. the free ebook

cherryfizz, with a Kindle, you plug it into your computer. When your computer open the prompt box, choose "open to view folders". The you just copy and paste the .pdf file into the folder than contains your books on you Kindle. It *may* be the same way for Kobo's and Nooks. Oh, and me brag about owning a Kindle? me? ME? Oh, goodness, no. I often find myself 'meandering' in my thoughts - it's nice to meet others like that. I wonder if it's a by-product of being deeply in to words.... It's like 'knackered' - a good old English expression, that is one of the ones that doesn't translate well now that I live in Canada. Comes from when old horses were sent to the knackers yard to be made in to glue - for those who were bemused. :) I have to confess I ordered four 'real' books today - only because they're not available on e-book. :) Question - does anyone else feel driven insane by people's terrible use of the English language? I'm constantly stunned by the way people don't check spelling, and post barely literate messages on forums. I mean, how are they not embarrassed? And on pet peeves - see, I said I'd go off on tangents with you - those who use double negatives. I actually heard a politician on TV say irregardless the other day. Ok - I'm climbing down off my soapbox now. :) Thanks for making me feel so welcome! Heading off to start the new Dan Brown, now.

Well, I did it! I read forever and did enough hand wringing so I finally took the plunge (after I read the Amazon return policy) and ordered the WiFi for $139. NY State happilly added its 8% tax so I really spent $150.12. It will arrive on or after Nov.1 so now I am deciding what I will choose as my first book--I am going to splurge on a current best seller. If I had made decisions this carefully in 1969, I would not have ended up divorced in 1980. Now THAT was a costly mistake ;-)

there are tons of free books for kindle, I have my kindle for pc library full of free books I have downloaded from amazon and feedbooks.com both offer the kindle format.
Just go to the amazon kindle area and do a search for free kindle books watch out because sometimes ones that cost find their way into the list.

Thanks to all--I am counting the days until delivery. I am certain I will read a lot of free books but for the first one on the Kindle, I want to celebrate with a current best seller. For old books, I am about to look up Eudora Welty.

Amazon just announced yesterday that there will be 2 new features coming soon...you will be able to download newspapers and magazines and will also be able to lend a book to another kindle user for 14 days.

After you've had a chance to play with your new Kindle, it would be great if you took a few minutes to review it for the other members of this forum. Doesn't have to be anything fancy, just general impression and what you like and dislike about the reader.

If you are interested in free books you might also want to check out Project Gutenberg. They have 33,000 titles although much of their content tends to be older works but if you're interested in the classics, the price is right!
