Viking Electric Wall Oven DEDO530TSS

We finally may be starting to do our reno that we have been planning for over a year. I have been reading this forum over that entire time and thought we had all the appliances picked. Went to order the double Elux wall oven, but the store has a floor model of the Viking DEDO530TSS and offered it to us for the price of the Icon. As a long time reader I knew there have been issues with Vikings, but it seems to be more related to their gas ranges (ignitors and such as well as sometimes questionable customer service). However this model has an infared broiler and so I am re-thinking our decision on the Elux.

I am asking if any reader has this model or any other Viking electric wall oven and would like to know your satisfaction? Have there been issues with the electronic controls and self-cleaning function? Is the infrared broiler advantageous and worth the risk? Although we live in the northern climates, I tend to cook on the grill as long as it is above 0 degrees, so is this something I would use? Even if you don't own a Viking electric but have a friend your comments are welcome as I have done a search and can come up with nothing specific on the reliability of Viking electric ovens. Thanks for all the info I have received over the last year and any help you can provide on this specific item.

An Electric infra red broiler? that I gotta see, I knew it was possible. We never broil inside the house, but we can't all live in Calif?--so I'm just "Curious"!!!!!!

Thanks for the response. Viking describes it as "gourmet-glo glass enclosed infrared broiler" but not sure how much better, if any than an electric coil. Was hoping someone on this sight had experience with it.

As I said I was getting the Elux based on yours and other posters comments so I may just stick with the "for sure" recommendation. Which model do you have? Is the difference between the Icon and regular model mostly cosmetic? Thanks for your help.

We have the Viking Designer Series double wall ovens (model #ded0275ss) - they are about 4 years old. Overall, we've been pretty happy with them. I love to bake and for the most part, haven't had any trouble. The ovens do seem to "cycle" the temp up and down a lot - was told this is normal for these ovens. The thing I find inexcusable on ovens of this "quality"/price, is the lettering - it rubs off very easily. We don't use harsh chemicals to clean; in fact, you can just scrape the lettering off with a fingernail. I was in an appliance showroom recently and was told they are now etching the letters/numbers instead of screening them. So, I think this wouldn't be an issue for you if you're getting a new model (but I'd double check first!). Bottom line - if I were to do it all over again, I probably would not buy the Viking. We're about to start our renovation, and will likely keep the ovens since they are relatively new and want to save $$ where we can. But the whole lettering thing just irritates me to no end! Last fall we were facing approximately the same situation when looking for a double oven. Went to order the Elux (deciding between the regular and the Icon) and the dealer had a Viking (DEDO 530TS) floor model that was being discontinued. Sought opinions from GW on Viking electric ovens, as there were many negative postings on Viking. Received very little feedback as most postings on Vikings dealt with gas stoves, refrigeration, dishwashers and customer service. Surmised that if Viking had significant issues with their electric ovens, this website would have posted so we took a chance and purchased the Viking. We have had the unit in operations for about 7 months with no issues. The wife loves it and is very happy with how it bakes and roasts. It holds temp very even and is extremely well insulated (the unit weighed over 400 pounds). The reason I wanted it was for the IR broiler, but I have not tried that feature as yet (I tend to grill out even when it is cold). We've used the self-clean cycle once and no problems with the control board. We did have to have the bottom door replaced as the delivery people hit a garden rock by the sidewalk and shattered the glass. Viking was very helpful in getting a whole door shipped out as the store was attempting to just replace the glass (and was not getting the panel square with no insulation showing). So we did not have any problem with their CS. As to pricing, this is where I think you should make the distinction. If I would have had to pay more than the Elux Icon I would not have purchased. The regular Elux was $2,800 and the Icon was $3,100. I offered the store $3,000 and they accepted. Check Ebay for the model you are looking at as there are many discontinued models being offered. Use that as a basis for making an offer on the Viking. If the dealer refuses to get more reasonable on his price (after all it is being discontinued/floor model and the dealer should want to get rid of it) then go with the Elux units as they are rated very highly. I cannot say that this oven is worth that much more (if you have to pay the normal MSRP) than the cost of an Elux. Good luck.

Camilla, we are in your situation. In our latish 50's, still working long hours. And on work nights we like to cook fast and clean up fast. Nothing, IMHO, will beat induction for that. As much as I wanted an Aga range -- okay, for the looks, I admit -- we are going induction with a 30" basic Bosch cooktop, one 30" Electrolux wall oven, a convection microwave, and a mid-sized Breville oven which looks to be an amazing thing for two people. (My mom loaned us one for the remodel, and wow . . . just wow.) We are mounting the oven so that the door drops about mid-thigh, and if our small kitchen would have permitted it, we'd have followed the new trend of mounting the dishwasher up high, too, or gone with flanking dish drawers on either side of the sink to limit bending. Regarding ventilation, our appliance dealer (a very high end shop) told us with induction you need ventilation, but you need a lot less of it as you are venting only the smell and steam, not the heat. There is very little excess heat with the induction process. He recommended significantly less venting power to be mounted over induction vs. traditional gas or electric. Some here will disagree with that, but we are following his advice. But back to the range -- having had gas, but having often used induction while traveling, I already know I will never go back. Never, ever. If you are totally remodeling, I'd put the Viking on Craig's List and make life easy. Good luck!

Sorry about the delay Tom, Still doing even more research since I know you want double ovens.

My oven is an Elux Icon Designer Series 30" oven, purchased for $1617.00 in april of 2006. (E30EW75ESS).
We chose the Icon because of the larger door glass and the designer series due to the curved handles (our kitchen is "One Big Curve")-- even a very expensive and fancy cooktop (36" semi circle).
That turkey (Non Elux) died in less than 2 years and forced us to redo the granite--nobody else made a curved one--(But I Digress).

My oven was replaced by Model # E30EW75GSS. After reading many reviews on that oven, AJMadison, Sears, Best Buy etc
I would recommend to stay away from that one!

That oven was replaced by # EW30EW55GS. with the exception of a review or 2, this oven is getting all 5 Star Reviews, Sears, Best Buy, Retreivo, AJMadison etc--in fact I am posting a link for some of the reviews at the bottom of this post.

Sooooo, I'm "all set" to recommend this one to you, but you want "Double Ovens". So we look up the model number for the double oven, # EW30EW65GS, expecting to see the same "good news".
OH OH, reviews totally different, display problems, and enough other problems, that I really can't recommend it over the Viking.

Strange that the same model double oven has problems whilst the single doesn't? My guess is, due to the larger "Metal Mass" of 2 ovens, that that metal is not cooling down quickly enough to keep the heat out of the delicate Electronic parts.

Perhaps Antss or one of our other Oven experts has a theory on my "Sorry Find"?

So, at least reading all the reviews I did, I certainly would not recommend it over the Viking (at this time), Like You, I do wish there was more info about the Viking!

I wished I had better news for you, and I "Highly recommend" that you goggle "EW30EW65GS" yourself and draw your "Own Conclusions".

Wow. Gary. You have thrown me for a loop! I've been looking at ovens to replace the ones going away, looking for a 'good deal,' but Elux was my 'fall back.' You had me convinced. But I need a double and you're not endorsing that one!

Thanks for al your time. Wow I would not have thought there would be any difference between a single oven and a double one. Well, like Rhome, now I need to really look further as the Elux was always our fall back option. Thanks again.

Well, the last thing in the world I would want was to recommend something and then they have problems with it, and Especially YOU rhome410----as everybody here knows, you have had more than your share of problems.

It is sad, because when you read the reviews (Except for one that broke)--in which case they "Dump On Everything"
People brag about how well the oven bakes, Read the link I posted, (If you haven't already)! If you look at all the reviews I did, (about the double ovens), You can see that in NO WAY in good conscience could I recommend that.

I Do hope it is a "Blip in the chart", so to speak, and like the 27" Model that Kelsold found and posted that Elux admitted the problem and fixed it, sooooo it is with the 30" double ovens---but lacking proof of that, I hafta be "Forthrite" and like Antss "Call Em Like I see EM"

Sorry about the disappointment to you , and maybe better news is forthcoming from Elux!

Well, that's not terrific news....I had these installed about 2 months ago. So far, they're working fabulously--no problems with anything, including the lighted display. I am pleased with their performance thus far. While they don't get quite the workout they would in Rhome410's house, the ovens do see a fair amount of use at our house. Maybe, like the 27" models, they fixed the problem on 2010 models. From what I've read, when problems do occur customer service from Electrolux is good. I'm not particularly worried at this point.

I'm still further researching the reliability single versus double ovens. Guess what, I did a search for Miele double oven reviews, got the same if not worse reviews for the Mieles and I suspects fewer of them are sold than Elux's (due to price).
So i'm gonna start a post on "Single oven vs Double oven Reliability.

Here's what I found, so far, but not a lotta help, grrrrr.

"However, one major consumer-testing organization finds that double wall ovens are more repair-prone than single units, although it did not specify what type of repairs these ovens typically require."

Anyway, back to work as now my curiosity is really "UP" alto I'm a gonna try to get to the "Bottom" of This!

We have that electric Viking single oven with infrared broiler.

We went from gas to electric because of space issues due to the gas needing to be 17" off the floor and we were going under counter. I liked that electric was clean, since our old gas was so dirty and smelly, but was apprehensive about going to electric for performance. DH, who does most of the cooking and broiling, I, on the OTH, do the baking and roasting, was excited about the infrared broiler.

Well, after 1 1/2 years, we are neither excited or dismayed really. It does the job well, but there is something about electric, we can't put our finger on, that just isn't exciting.

Has anyone else experienced this?
