Can I retrofit a shower pipe bar into a slide bar?

Hello, all. I found a great Hansgrohe shower pipe hand shower system for a great price. However, the hand shower is static. The shower pipe looks like I could some how change the set up to allow the hand shower to be movable up and down. Is this possible? What are the benefits of a shower pipe set up vs. a non shower pipe set up? Any insights welcome!

It is possible for you to do a retrofit, but the ease of it might depend on a properly configured slide bracket being available.

Obviously the bracket would have to be sized to fit the vertical tube. If the bracket is a 2-piece "clamp-on" type of thing, then that's easy. If it's not and you'd have to unthread the shower head off the vertical to install the slider over the vertical tube, then reassemble. That might make it difficult.

Another consideration would be if there is enough clearance between the vertical tube and the shower wall for the sliding bracket to fit and be functional.

So, no promises.

Another option that will definitely work would be to abandon the idea of the infinitely adjustable slide and to just buy another fixed wall mount bracket to hang the handheld from. You could have one bracket mounted low and the other higher. Two locations. Less flexibility, but much easier.

The bracket part number appears to be 96532xx0, with the "xx" being the finish. Chrome is usually "00", brushed nickel "82". So your number should be 96532820. The brackets in chrome are usually $15-$30, nickel could be that or doubled.

Hansgrohe tidbits can be difficult to source, especially if the price has been lowered due to it being discontinued. You can look beyond your specific product model though, as another type of hansgrohe bracket might hold your handheld head just fine.

garden18c, I found this info while googling- I am sure there is lots more info to be had... "Most building codes require that they be capable of withstanding a 250 pound load. To support this weight, you must screw the grab bars into wall studs or into additional blocking. Molly bolts, nails, or screws into sheetrock are not adequate. "Cats" 2-by-4s that you nail in between the studs, or "Plates" plywood or another substantial material that spans the wall studs, are both common practice." You now have me thinking that I should block support into the shower wall we're now building for possible grab bars in the future...(and take a picture/note where the blocking is)

Take a look at Danze D466000 wire shower baskets. D466000 fits two different Danze slide bars, one of which is 1" (the Versa slide bar).

Depends how you plan to use the hand shower. We have two. The one in our basement guest bath is on a long (40") bar, and we positioned it so that it would be a good head height for my 5 foot tall daughter, and we placed the fixed shower head high enough for my 6 foot son. We used this bath for 4 years while waiting to reno our Master BR (sigh). I liked to have the hand shower set at a height to hit my lower back, also low enough to grab easily while cleaning shower, shaving legs, etc. In our Master BR (finally done), I have the bar set much lower, as it will ONLY be used for lower back, for shaving legs, etc. I absolutely love standing under rain shower setting on fixed and having hard massage setting on hand held aimed at my lower back.

Initially I wanted to use something like this, the Kohler hydro rail system, use the original shower head, and add a hand shower. However, it is a little pricey considering there are relatively inexpensive slide bars that are reasonably attractive for a lot less, and it is for a kids’ bathroom that’s less than two years old. We just kept thinking he was so close to being able to reach, he’d grow into it, but he’s needing to be more independent faster than he’s growing taller. I started looking at Moen since that’s what’s in the wall, but the Moen slide bars in the lower price range are pretty terrible in appearance. They look more like utilitarian combination grab bars. There are some better ones that are a little more expensive and have cover plates, (which I think I need if I have to use a spacer in the tub surround) but if I’m back up near the price range of the Hydrorail, I like that it’s more streamline. I think I read that the Delta bracket on the actual slide bar is “universal,” which is why I wondered if it might be a good starting place to modify something to use the Moen Magnetix handheld. Delta does have some more attractive bars, though, so if I’m starting from scratch I’ll spend more time looking there. I’m still holding out hope on the Magnetix until I’m sure I can’t use it with any kind of slide bar.
