Thank you all. I particularly like the idea of including the year. I'm not sure how old this seedling is, from Sea Monster: It looks a lot like its parent, except -- at least at this point -- it's considerably smaller in form. I think it's 3 or 4 years old, but I'm not sure and I don't know how close it is to it's final form. Here it is next to its parent:

Just wondering: Are you labelling the plants so that the name is visible at all times? Are you labelling the plants so that others can see the name in your garden? Are you labelling the plants just to make sure you have a record of it? or Are you labelling the plants because you keep forgetting the name and want to have it easily visible to remind yourself of the name? I don't have a lot of people coming to my garden so I don't have visible named tags. I use cheap plastic window blinds which can be easily bent to break off a piece. I bury it in the ground when I plant a hosta. I add the plastic window blind to each pot I have---sometimes visible, sometimes not. If I were to have a group of people visiting my garden, I would then add some tags to most of my hosta. I love seeing the names of the hosta when I visit people's gardens. It usually isn't easy to get a hold of the host in order to ask what the names of the plants are. Now that I am officially a senior, I do forget some of the names of the hosta. But I figure it is good for my brain to get some exercise while trying to remember!

A quick google search says it was sold by Ethan Allen and was probably high end, solid wood, although it's hard to tell from these pictures. If that's what this is, some pieces are still going for relatively high prices online (for used furniture). [edited: Maybe not ... the Ethan Allen stuff was "Classic Manor" and the "EB" on your dresser isn't coming up in my searching... ] I hope when you say "refinish" that you mean putting on a new clear finish after properly sanding and prepping the wood, and not applying milk paint or some other "distressed" garbage finish. It's a lovely piece and I'd hate to see it destroyed with crappy paint. Sorry for the harsh words. Distressing furniture is about the worst trend since "live laugh love" wall art.
