Lights over vanity mirror -- width?

Should light fixtures above a mirrored medicine cabinet fit within the width of said medicine cabinet?

I could use some design advice. I'm putting in two new vanities in two different bathrooms. One vanity is 36" and will have a 30" medicine cabinet above it. The other vanity is 42" wide and its medicine cabinet will be 36" wide.

I'm looking at Hudson Valley fixtures with 2, 3 or 4 lamps (a single junction box holding a fixture that branches out to the sides), like the Edison or the Weston.

Is it a design faux pas for the lights to span more width than the medicine cabinet/mirror below it?

The bathrooms are small and will have plenty of light, so this is a style, not light, question. I know it all ultimately comes down to personal preference, but I'd like to calibrate against a style guideline, if there is one!

Advice and photos welcome.
