You Know You're Committed When...
Comments (4)Hello Newbie in NJ -- I've been using window blinds for years. I've found them on curbs and even had people donate them when they found out why I was keeping them out of landfills. I propagate so many plants that I use a lot of these. This will be my first year wintersowing, so I know I'll use up a lot of them. The best marker to use on the labels are these : http://www.gardeners.com/Marking-Pen/FlowerGardening_PlantMarkers,33-196,default,cp.html from Gardener's Supply. They last for - ev - er ! I've had mine for years ! Regular Permanent Markers are not permanent. At least not here -- maybe in Texas the summers are just too hot and the sun too much for them. However, pencils are the next best thing, since the lead never wears off. And if your plant doesn't make it, you can always erase the name and use it for something else. I prefer the marker, though, since it's easier to read from eye-level and I don't have to get down on my hands and knees to read the pencil. But to make my marker last longer, I might use pencil for those labels in plants that I give away. Just a few hints for you with your new-found discovery ! patty...See MoreHow long before you know it made it?
Comments (8)Last spring I ordered an A. mandshuricum (5ft tall)and it came fully leafed out, parital bear root and quite dry. It lost over half of it's leaves. We still had pretty hard frosts for a while at night so I had to wrap it in a tarp and put a light bulb under the tarp each night for a while. It looked pretty sad all summer but has leafed out quite nicely this spring. Last fall (early)I bought a native big tooth maple on a clearance sale. I planted it and within two weeks it had no leaves and looked very dead--brittle twigs etc. I planned on digging it up this spring and seeing if the nursery would make good on it's one year guarantee. This spring it leafed out quite nicely....See MoreGarish/Commitment: last look before removal.
Comments (29)I think there is some nostalgia going on concerning changes in entertaining styles over the years. When i describe to my DH the types of entertaining my parents did, it is quite different than what went on in his family growing up. Yet we grew up about 3 miles from each other and my parents are only about three years older than his and were roughly on the same socio-economic level. In my parent's circle, whether entertaining in our own home or going to someone else's, it meant getting dressed up in your "Sunday clothes", eating on fine china, and the parents enjoying cocktails or coffee (often poured from a silver set). The hostess went to extra effort with a fine meal. And nobody had a housekeeper or other servant and nothing was catered. None of the mom's worked outside the home although a couple did go to work once the kid's were in high school or after graduation. In my husband's childhood home, guests simply joined at the table which was the type of meals served any other night of the week, on the everyday china, and nothing special was done just because there were a few extra people for dinner. These differences are still reflected in what goes on in our lives today. Gatherings at our home and my sibling's home are typical of how my mom entertained; gatherings at his sibling's home are very similar to how his parents entertained. Quite frankly, I like both styles of entertaining. There are times when it's fun to go to the effort in menu selection and other elements of entertaining to create a special night for your guests. And there are times when it's fun to sit around with a box of pizza and beer. We do both styles of entertaining because I don't have the time or energy (maybe it's mainly the energy) to always entertain the way I was brought up. While I enjoy doing it, I also work. My mom didn't. It does make a difference. Especially because all of our friends are working couples, not working husbands and SAHMs, and their work schedules aren't all 8-5 jobs so simply scheduling a dinner party can be a logistical nightmare. palimpsest, I love the glimpse into your childhood home. I'm sure this is a bitter time for you to see it disappear....See MoreDecorating is easier when you commit!
Comments (23)It's easier, yes. I usually commit without problem. I just need to love it very much. Lol. Then we move or something. The only things I'm often able to take with me are books and art. So I'm more impulsive with these, as I am with everything smaller. Big stuff, I can hunt for months, maybe years, very patiently, Like a cat that waits for a mouse. Sometimes I need to put things together fast because it's not for me, and it's against my nature. Not because I'm not a fast person since I am; it just takes pleasure from the process. I also got into this mode of trying to buy bigger items not new(because I like new things I can't afford really), and now every time I make exception and buy new I have this vague feeling of dissatisfaction. Even if was a good decision. I arrived to a conclusion though that whatever one does, well at least in decor- he's commiting. At a bare minimum, he's commiting to not commit. So it's two sides of the same coin, really. I'd rather commit; I get attached to things. I rarely stop loving something, I can only add something new to love. I kinda embroider it all in. I can get weird about art..say all my portraits remind me of somebody. and I had sort of falling-out with a close friend that (in this case a very abstract) painting reminds me of. It's kinda painful..we're on speaking terms, but it was long painful thing for me to go through. So I put the painting in the guest room now, even though beforehand it was very central. I never had these mood swings with art before, so I surprized myself with this reaction. I think I get gloomier too, in general. In decor. I think the house should reflect life..and love..and they're not formulas. I'll be still me; yet "me" will get slightly different as life goes. One's age also influences things; I think people know themselves but this knowledge takes time. Self acceptance might take time too. My gloominess, I see it as something I want to go with, and be more daring, because to me, it's my self acceptance. I don't go for look per se, I go for feel. I think with all the tiny changes it's pretty consistent. It just grows sprouts..or roots..or sprouts and roots..:) There's limitation in that too; however I feel it'd still be me and not somebody else; my family will still be mine; my life will still be mine; but what's freedom? Freedom is but us being able to claim our limitations. To commit. More or less proudly.....See Moresweet.reverie
