The obvious thing to do is not use Google. I dislike their invasion of our privacy. The government has already stopped some of their antics and ordered them to write their privacy terms in a language we all can understand. I do well on the internet without google, I don't even get their cookies on my PC anymore.

The obvious thing to do is ignore it.

Your TV signal provider knows what you watch. The phone company knows who you call, your cell phone service knows that AND where you are. The supermarket "customer account" you use for discounts knows that you like one product and not another. Your credit card company knows what days you go shopping and where you buy gasoline. Etc.

No one knows or cares about "you", it's about trends and preferences. The word "privacy" is a red herring, the way most people use it, it really means nothing at all.

There's two meanings of "organic" being intermingled and confusing the issues, I think, harmonyp. Whether or not something is grown "organically" (a cultural movement based on sometimes questionable premises, in this ecologist's opinion) has nothing to do with whether or not it is an organic form of nitrogen (i.e., nitrogen as part of a large organic molecule that breaks apart slowly into plant-usable forms of nitrogen). Nitrate and ammonium, which are inorganic, ionic compounds, are considered the plant-usable forms of nitrogen, although this view is being modified as more and more evidence piles up for plants sometimes using organic forms of nitrogen directly. As opposed to nitrogen in large organic molecules, the inorganic forms of nitrogen, provided en masse by synthetic/manufactured fertilizers, are highly mobile in the environment. If they aren't taken up immediately by the plant, they readily move into waterways or the atmosphere where the excess becomes a problem. So, probability of over-application is the main issue, first-order, not the form of nitrogen. Don't use excessive amounts of synthetic fertilizers and it's not a problem. Over-application of synthetic fertilizer by rose gardeners would be less than a pittance, anyway; it's large-scale use of excessive amounts of synthetics in big agriculture that is of concern (plus concomitant doubling of "in-play" nitrogen in ecosystems due to the need to feed exponentially-growing human populations, but THAT problem is second-order and beyond...). My preference for alfalfa lies in it being an organic molecule form that makes nitrogen slowly available over a long period of time, having other benefits for the soil, and posing less potential for application of excessive amounts. It is cheap, easy to obtain and use, and my roses look fine to me. I am too lazy and busy to keep track of multiple applications and timing required for synthetic fertilizers over the growing season. So, win-win on a number of fronts; who could complain? As a consultant in restoration ecology, I'm actually a big fan of Roundup. It's an important tool-of-the-trade, though usually considered only after non-chemical means are considered and rejected.

Interesting. I use no pesticides at all, but when I hear about cognitive function, I think about children. I also think about pregnant women who are carrying and nurturing children. I don't know how we can expect a straight answer about these chemicals when it took so long for us to hear about the dangers of hormone replacement after the companies had proof that they were dangerous. Once something has been approved, it is very difficult to get it off the market -- aspirin for instance. I don't know if there are many jobs around that hire people to prove that chemicals are dangerous -- just to prove that they are safe. All you have to do to find out how safe they are is to call the company and ask. Don't ask about yourself, but ask about exposure to a baby or pregnant woman. If it is dangerous for them, it is too dangerous for me. Sammy

Regardless of what you say we do the best we can to prevent the invasion of our privacy, even if it doesn't work, we try. Just because a burglar "gets in if he wants to bad enough" we still lock our doors and have the outside lights on. When I do business with someone "I" give them the information. Google takes it. My gas company does not walk in to my home without me inviting him in, Google does.

Please tell me what personal information do you believe you are able to keep confidential, that you benefit from protecting, by not using Google ?

To you it means nothing at all, to me it does. You do what is important to you and I do what is important to me. If the government thinks google crossed the line that is good enough for me. It's my computer and I don't want Google junk on it. I don't care if that is foolish or not. I can stop them and that suits me just fine. I don't like being force to give them my information telephone number or an email address to have a google account so I don't have an account. I paid $900. for a new PC and couldn't even set it up unless...............I set up an MS account. What if I just wanted it for a word processor with no internet. Umm, I think I will reformat, disconnect the internet and see if I can use it.

I went through the new PC and deleted every thing that I had to register for. I have been able to anything on my PCs I want to do without a Google or MS account.

I don't worry or obsess about it. Well I can't get buy without their reverse image search. Only other one I know of is tiny eye and it can never find what I need.

Sometimes I come across a finished needlework with no info and I plug the photo into google and most times I can locate the image else where with the info. For every 10 times google finds it tiny eye may find it once if that. If there is another reverse image search that works just as well as google I would love to know about it. Mary

Acrafty lady, I have never heard of reverse image search or tiny eye. I use yahoo or Bing.

Oh how do you do a reverse image search in yahoo or bing? I am talking about this. You click the little camera icon, browse to the photo on your computer and upload it and google searches for a match. Mary
