I personally would skip trying to tone it down with earthy colors -- the reality is that nothing is going to soften that green. The only thing you can do with fixtures like that is to embrace them and go retro or with a theme.

Since I don't think I could stomach a pink mosaic tile floor to go with the retro look, I'd paint the walls the yellow of the inside of an avocado, go with a brown vanity and pebble floor the color of the pit and add very dark green accents and stylized avocado art on the wall.

Even if you don't go whole hog, I think the wainscoting looks out of place. The reddish paint isn't bad and I think a soft yellow would work. The blue I really dislike in that room.

I know people do the retro look with these, but frankly have no idea what that really looks like. Other than the wallpaper on these walls was a orange and lime green bird theme!

What about just a light tan all around on the walls and no wainscotting?

The only problem is that right outside of the bathroom, there is a room painted in a similar pale yellow and I think it would be wierd having two pale yellows so near.

Equest had a great thread in the home decorating forum where she updated her bath keeping her original avocado fixtures. It came out really nice and might give use some direction with colors. The link to that thread is below.

I loved what Equest did - amazing transformation with what she had to work with. I think the black cabinetry looks much better than the white cabinetry and beadboard, and I am not generally a fan of black cabinets. And I love the cream walls and the fabric she chose with the cream, black and green ties it all together. I would consider doing a similar shower curtain over the glass door of the shower so you would have some fabric in there to soften the colors and tie it together, and it would minimize the green look.

I like the idea of going with earth tones. In fact, you could really play it up and give it those soothing "spa" bath colors. Take the walls to a rich chocolatey brown, and use the beiges & tans in the biscuit granite to pull out other earth tones. A nice stone-look tile on the floor, and you're good to go. Just make sure to use that avocado color on some accent pieces -- sprinkling it around makes it look more intentional and cohesive.

I also love the earlier posted idea of using a actual avocado to inspire your color choices. If nature used the color palette, how bad could it be?

Funny you should mention spa tones. The place I got the idea for earthy soothing tones was from a color swatch room sample. It was a bathroom and it had beadboard, light peach/cream walls and avo and gold tones towels. Also a sienna brown table. So I was sort of playing off of it.

I wanted to use the beadboard to cut down on the amount of brown though.

Do you think a more mocha brown or the one like I have? The one I have is really like a sienna born color.

I already have these glass accessories from target that are solid clear glass with a avo green tint in them. So it picks up the color but is not a solid color.

I am not sure about adding a fabric shower curtain as my daughter would pull it down on her (she's 2.5). And there are no real window worthy of fabric curtains.

The vanity is a light oak and new. I think DH would croak if I painted the wood a dark color and went with lighter walls. It's a sacrilege to paint wood for him!

What about going for the more earthy tones in the granite and choose a warm yellow like Equest did?

Equest's bathroom looks fabulous -- and it's exactly the colors of an real Haas avocado. :) I especially like her choice of the dark cabinets.

At the price of those pre-fab tops, if you want real granite I suggesting looking at the remnants in your local granite fabricators' yards'. It might be a little bit more since you'd have to buy the sink, but you'll have a lot more options than the few you can get at the local big box store.

I think the yellows will be fine together provided they are either somewhat close or enough different. You'll have a door frame dividing them. I'd be very cautious with tan walls. The avocado fixtures are kind of blah and tan walls might be, too. Some tans are very rich but most are not.

If you like the idea of a shower curtain -- if you get good shower rings (not the plastic clip ones) and a fabric curtain with metal grommets, your daughter shouldn't be able to rip it. Attach the bar to the studs in the wall, though, don't get a tension rod, or the first time she grabs it and swings on it it certainly will come down!

YOu know it's hard to tell from the screen, but I was mentally picturing something closer to the other granite color (I think HD called it Montesol?). Just based on the way you described it.

I understand you want the beadboard to cut down the amount of deep color, but what I think is hanging me up is the whiteness of it. It just seems very stark in contrast to the other elements you're describing. What if you were to do a beadboard that's stained or painted a color similar to the vanity? Or instead of beadboard put in a chair-rail or a plate-rail, and paint the wall below in the dark brown and above in the yellow-y green (like just two shades lighter than your fixtures)? I think if you take the white out of the equation you'll find it easier to acheive that calm look you're going for. jmho. :D

I dug out about 7 paint samples I have from other projects. There were two blues and the rest were variations of yellows, golds and whites.

I agree with the tan comment which is why I started to play with my samples. I thought I really liked the gold color I tried when it was down as a small patch behind the toilet on the wall. But when I painted a much larger sample to see how it would look, I didn't like it so much. I like another one called Butter Up from SW. But seems so like the yellow in the adjoining room. Will need to wait until tomorrow to see what color it is in real light.

So... is it "OK" to paint beadboard anything but white!?

Anyone have examples of two tone walls like hudsonleigh suggested? I like the idea of just a simple chair rail or plate rail breaking the colors other than a whole sheet of white color.

I really like that second bathroom. Too bad whatever I do will only get close to that in my fantasies! Ah, to be rich. :(

Anyway, you gave me two GREAT ideas.... two tones and just chair rail! The gold I have I really like but it wasn't working high up on the wall. So I just painted over everything and put the gold on the bottom, painted in a mock white chair rail and an ivory cream on the top (has slight orange tinge to it). It think it looks pretty cool... as cool as you can get with avocado green fixtures! The vanity is going to be a white oak and I have a strip. The colors in it really compliment the gold. I think it will be really warm and rich.

I can't wait to see it in daylight tomorrow (painting at midnight here!)
But now the flooring!

Ok, so here are the pics of what I am really liking. I have liked it all day and so does hubby. The white strip is going to be simple chair rail. Bottom is gold/yellow and the top is an ivory/orange color (slight orange). What do you all think? It actually makes the green shower and toilet very easy to look at now! I am going to get a matching toilet seat, too.

A new toilet is all of $60, and any idiot can install one. Really, I promise! I'd let my 6-year-old do it if he were strong enough!

Not wanting to take out the surround because you're "scared" of what's behind it is sending up alarm bells with me. If there's something bad, it's either hurting the home or your health or both. So if you don't want to take out the shower, skip it for $$ reasons, not fear of what's behind there. And they make paint for fiberglass surrounds!

Reyesuela, I should clarify.... I am scared of the construction. It's a mobile home and if you know anything about mobile home construction.... nothing is exactly standard so we could be opening up a whole new can of worms. I am not worried about there being water damage or something on that level. Plus, it's an added expense that we just can't take on right now. And the toilet is a no brainer. That's not the draw stopping point. But if we do the toilet, then the shower will look out of place. THen it's either remove that or paint it.

As for paint... I know they make paint and have google it extensively. I have even called professional tub/shower painters. However, based on everything I have read, there is no consensus that the paint actually works long term. If it is going to peal in a few years, then we will have more of a mess and will be forced into tearing it out ultimately. It will cost at least $400-$600 to have done professionally. At which point, might as well tear it out. If we do it and it doesn't work....

At this point, I am just trying to improve what was there and spruce it up a bit. I will leave the next owner to tearing it all out. It's just not in our budget right now (furloughs and all) to put a whole lot of money into it. We have much more to do on this place.

Safaribabe, I agree, oh to be rich! I would love to just have that kind of space for the double sink & separate tub & shower, nevermind the finishes! Ah well, I shall have to survive with my 6x7 masterbath =/ .

Anyway, I like the two tone walls, at least as it looks on my screen. I think you're definitely onto something there. What kind of surface were you thinking of for the floor - laminate, ceramic, etc? It might be nice to do something in a somewhat darker tone -- similar in tone to the vanity -- that would sort of "ground" everything, if you know what I mean.
