New member saying hello and ? about beach shingles

Hello! I'm new to this forum and am very excited to have found it. My hubby Jonah and I live in Edmonds, Washington and we are just beginning our build although it has taken years to actually get to this point. We took down our old cottage about 1.5 weeks ago and should be pouring the foundation for the new house next week. Like many of you, I started a blog to document the process and I just put up a video of our house/garage demolition and our house plans. I'll post a link in case anyone is interested. I'm looking forward to getting to know many of you throughout this journey and watching your homes be built too. It looks like some are almost finished!

My biggest concern right now is the exterior. We are building a craftsman style beach house and want the shingles to look beachy with that somewhat weathered look but we want to use hardie-type shingles since we live near the ocean and want low maintenance. I've searched online and can't seem to find hardie (or the equivalent) shingles that have that beachy look of weathered cedar. Does anyone know if they exist? Our second choice is to go with a pale buttery yellow color since we have both siding and shingles and then they'd at least match up. But my heart has been set on the "beach shingle" look for some time now and I don't want to give that up just yet. Thoughts?

Hello from a fellow Puget Sounder! Hubby and I are currently researching the building of our dream home up on Whidbey Island (our property looks out over Saratoga Passage) and we have visions of a shingle sided cottage. Like you, we're hoping for low maintenance, and our research so far seems to indicate that if you pick the right shingles and if they are applied properly, they should easily last 30 to 50 years with little or no maintenance required. (We built a very nice arbor and fence 20 years ago with Alaskan yellow cedar; the wood has held up very well, despite lots of shade and rain, with no rot and without the need for stain or paint - we just allowed it to age to a nice silvery gray.)

Hey Joe...quite a selection..Very nice plants before the holidays...:) Is your Holly true Holly or common name? Leaves resemble Holly, but thought Holly had white blooms??? Very nice haul. I passed a Good Will twice in two weeks..must have recently opened. Considered going inside, but was in a hurry so didn't get to check their products. Do they sell large pots? 10" plus... Ohio..hmm, there are a few Ebay sellers in Ohio, but can't think of any nurseries.. There is one nursery, World Plants, but can't recall if they're located in OH....www.worldplants.com I'm certain some of my plants came from Ohio, but can't think of any particular place at the moment. Can't even recall which city. Are you saying, you will not order plants via mail before the holidays, but will buy locally? Turkey Days? What about Christmas and New Year's Day? lol Very few nurseries ship after October, and those who do want to get rid of 2012's etc, stock. Remainders are usually discounted. Joe, did you know, once you joined GW, you become one of us? Pods who grow pods..lol, j/k...Happy Halloween. Actually, most plants prefer cool temps to hot, but that depends on how cold. If you start seeing ice on the walls, it's too cold..Then YOU better find a warmer place..lol. Joe, you were very heroic rescuing the little bird..Thank goodness. The neighbors across the street, husband and wife, rang my bell, asking ME to shoo a bird off their front porch..A Blue Jay. I was totally embarrassed for them. Two adult people asking a neighbor to shoo away a little bird! Good, ol' college days...lol.. About plastic..although our windows are semi-new, they leak air. During winter, when temps are -2, a slight draft seeps in..plants on the sills are cold..The cold is a horror to succulents. So, this year, I placed clear plastic on the sills. It might not be 100% effective, but I had to try something. Place a hand near the sill, it's very breezy. They say it's because the house is settling, which may or may not be the exact truth. IMO, the safest windows are the old-fashioned types..With a screen/storm window. Is that the name? lol..Haven't thought about the name in a long time. Two windows opposed to thin, 'gas' panes. New windows are a lot less work, I'll give them that..no painting, and easy to open and close, but new windows are nowhere as protective as the old types. Just my opinion. That's the reason plastic now goes on each window. Nope, can't afford a larger gh..lol.. Believe me, my dream is to design my own house w/attached solarium. Unless I win the lottery................. Next year, if all goes well, I 'might' sell some plants on Ebay..Agaves, 'pups will stay,' 2 Pachypodiums and a huge Pandanus. The Pandanus/Screw Pine has outgrown space. I detest this house w/small rooms...even if I didn't have plants, the rooms are tiny. Thank goodess there's a third bedroom, which is now a plant room..lol. I love Geraniums...what type did you get? The blackest iris I have grown is Midnight Oil, but it blooms very late and gets cooked in the hot sun. I am going to try it under a tree and see what happens. Matt McNames is a fabulous black and has been overlooked. You are lucky to have this iris. It is a vigorous grower. The most carefree black that I've grown is Keith Keppel's Night Game 1996 which usually blooms early to mid season. Not as black as some of the others, but I keep it for rewarding me with numerous flowers over the bloom season. It should have gone farther up the AIS awards ladder in my opinion. Shadows of Night by Rick Tasco '06 is the most ruffled black I grow. It was sent a year early and was a superstar this spring with lots of stalks. It has a great future in its class. Actually, that was the side I didn't do anything to other than cut a few of the larger berry bushes at the bottom of the hill. That birch is in rough shape and without staking it up and waiting several years, it won't survive. I would just assume take it down since it's not really in a great location anyway. I hate to do it since they are becoming relatively scarce due to disease and insects. This picture http://minus.com/lbx4OfKnwRF4xc shows what are definitely blackberry/raspberry bushes. I wouldn't mind having them, in fact I would welcome having a ton more, just not here. Being on the slope they will not be easy to get to when the mature and have fruit. If there was a way to transplant them or something I would love to hear it. I had tried it in the past, but the only way I have ever seen them grow was by accident and negligence. Based on the size of a few of the lower bushes, I would bet they may produce a limited amount of fruit. The smaller ones at the top of the hill however are definitely not mature enough from my experience. Going off on a tangent... I loved having berry bushes growing up and we had a large sandy area on my parent's property that they grew like crazy in. They eventually began to die off and my dad chopped them all down. The began to come back by the time I went to college, but it took a while to get any amount of fruit from them. My last year at college I rented a small cottage on a back road that had the biggest patch of black raspberries I had ever seen. I started picking as soon as they began to ripen and then ever couple days for the next 3 weeks. I stopped for lack of room in the freezer for 1gal ziplock bags. I made at least a dozen pint jars of jam and a few quarts. I gave a bunch away but i'm hoarding the last few of the "good" batch for myself. :) So in other words, I would love to have berry bushes, just not where they are. A lot of what you see on the ground on the left side (looking from the house) is debris and not much in the way of live plants other than some weeds. Obviously it is still very early here and not much has come up yet though. The tree shown in the background of this picture http://minus.com/lbwhVJrx76OE9d appears to be planted from what is left of the mulch/preparation around the base. This shot http://minus.com/lvFny84VUSjeW shows a rock swail that comes down from what is left of the last owners fish pond sort of thing. There is a reddish low lying plant growing on either side that I failed to get a close up picture of. It appears that it will look nice later in the spring but needs some weeding and/or mulching. I will take your advice and try posting some pictures on the "name that plant" forum. In the meantime, would I benefit from getting some sort of tall meadow grass mix to put down in a few weeks? *whoops, I wrote a book

Beckysharp - so sweet to post this! Its been so long since I've blogged and I love the fellowship with other design lovers! My hope with my new "old" house was to historically restore it, but alas it was too far gone. Time, weather and new building standards and codes made it too cost prohibitive for us to tackle in the most museum like- historic sense. We are trying very hard re-create many of the original features of the house and keep all its inherent charm. Like all old homes, over the the years there were updates and renovations. The kitchen was re-done in the late 60's early 70's, walls were removed, a library ripped apart to make room for a family room, and the cook and maids rooms were rehabbed. A bathroom was added to the first floor in a very odd location. The original house was set up for fine living and as such household rooms (i.e. kitchen, Laundry, pantry) , which in the 1900's were delegated to the staff, were small, cramped and not very attractive for a modern family. In fact, prior to the 1960-70 renovation, the only way to enter the kitchen was thru a small butlers pantry. Original owners spent their days in the living room, dining room, library and beautiful porches. The original home did not even include a bath on the first floor. We did not change the floor plan from the previous renovation except to move the bath, the rest remains the same. This project is a labour of love for us. We have done exhaustive research to try to be accurate as possible, especially with the exterior, as we love the old New England shingle-style homes and want to preserve the aesthetic and the feeling of our beautiful area. But it's important for others to remember that it will be our year round home, not a summer cottage, so liberties were taken inside to make the house usable for our family now and in the future (empty nesters, children and grandchildren!). Over the next few months we will be putting everything back together - so keep checking in and remember things are just starting to taking shape - sometimes the smallest detail can be the one element that makes all the difference. I may be biased at the moment but I wouldnt choose real shingles. I just spent the past two days re-staining cedar shingles on one of my competitors homes that is only 4 years old. They are a good builder and stained appropriately but they face south and just require a lot of maintenance.

I fear I may be rebuked for this suggestion but have you considered poplar bark? Its better as an accent but I think its always a better alternative to real shingles.

Also try Nichiha. Fiber cement product just as good as Hardie but usually more affordable. Not sure about that weathered look though..

SpringtimeHomes, thank you so much for the Nichiha information. From looking online it looks like their shingles are much more realistic when it comes to the weathered look. They used to have weathered gray ones, but it doesn't look like they are available anymore. I'm linking to a photo I found of a house that used those shingles... I love it! I emailed the company and I look forward to hearing from them.

Love them! I think that there could be some long term aesthetic maintenance benefits to those as well.

We too are having the questions on the look of the shingles. Nichiha only offers the Frontier line in pre stained. Much less detailed looking than the previous Sierra line and only four colors. The sierra line is still avalable in primed only. We were ready to go with "leftovers" in the discontinued Sierra but the company "Pulled" them from the distributors in case of needing replacements for previous buyers. Nichiha priced highest in my area than other fiber cements.
Now we are looking at real cedar shingles pre finished from cedar shingles direct . com Does anyone have experience with them? A friend just redid his 40 year old shingle siding this summer and said only good things about using real cedar.
We currently have Certainteed vinyl Cedar Impressions on our five year old house but are building our forever house and were looking into fiber cement but none looks as real as the vinyl we have.

The Nichiha weathered gray to me was the most realistic. Before we decided on brick, I requested samples of it and several other colors. Nichiha can be shiny, and the weathered gray was less so. I can't believe they discontinued that - it was very nice looking!

After researching and getting samples, we are now thinking of just going with hardie shingles & planks and then painting them all the same color... a beachy blue/grey or a soft yellow. We are doing white trim. Since our house is mostly planks with some shingles, I don't want the shingles to be significantly different from the planks. Oh decisions, decisions!
