Thunderbird - POP doesn't recognize password

A up-to-date version of Thunderbird that has been working for years now will not retrieve email. First problem was the the "secure authentication" box somehow got clicked, so the POP would not accept logon. That fixed the POP would not accept the password, which was reentered several times, without several restarts of Thunderbird... no success.

I am thinking about reloading Thunderbird, or do a system Restore.

1) I can't remember how to trigger a system restore to a time in the past (not sure this does any to applications).

2) I can't find the mail folders in the Windows file system, maybe I don't have the file manager (explorer) checked to see all files, how do I to that? Better, where does Thunderbird store its mail folders?

Thanks, seems I've done this before, just not recently enough to remember the details.
