Your Thoughts About Kindle Fire?

Will you buy it? If not, why not? Trying to decide for myself.

I didn't order it because I already have a tablet. It looks nifty, though, and at a great price. I'm looking forward to hearing the reviews when it's shipped. Here's a good website for all things kindle.

not likely at least not at current price point, there are too many other very good tablets out there and I owm a few that I really like, that do pretty much the same things. Amazon is scrambling to try to catch up to get in the tablet game. It does look like a nice little tablet and at least they did not go nuts with the price point but still a bit high. It uses linux too so would be pretty much like the other Android tablets. But Amazon is putting a lot of Amazon proprietary stuff on it.

I already use the Amazon app store to get a lot of the apps I have on my current tablets.

the plus points on the fire, it has a dual core processor, it has 1020x600 resolution(ok could be higher), it has Flash ability(as do most Android tablets but not ipad), and according to them it has 8 hr battery WITH wifi OFF. I am doubtful of the actual time that will be interesting to see.

They will sell a lot of them simply because people have heard of them, there are a lot of other very good comparable tablets out there but many people don't look or know about them. Amazon has the money to put the advertising out there in your face.
Con big one is it does not mention that epub is a supported content, that is a big con since so many book sites are using epub. Now if it allows you to add other ereaders from apps stores that do use epub that would be ok. Just not sure if that is an option. Also not sure how it handles DRM material.

Well, I now have a Nook Tablet AND a Kindle Fire. I'm planning to return one of them but I felt like I had to try them both. I've had the Nook for a few days but just got the Fire tonight. So far I think I like the Nook better. I like the feel of it - it's more comfortable to hold and not as slippery. It also has kind of a frame around the screen that makes it nicer to hold compared to the Fire which just has a little ridge around the edge - probably why the Fire is a bit smaller. I want to use it without a book-like cover on it - will just store it in a sleeve. I do think the web browser is better on the Fire since it has tabs and the keyboard and shortcuts are nice. However the Nook touch screen seemed more responsive - touching things on the Kindle sometimes didn't "register". The Nook has more options for the book display though and I think some of them are easier on the eyes than the Fire - at least I prefer some of the options that aren't available on the Fire. I imagine a lot of this stuff can change though with a software update. What wouldn't change is the home button on the Nook which I also like - maybe I've just gotten used to it. I'm going to try them out over the weekend and then decide. I do think Amazon is way ahead on content but I'm mainly interested in books and there are lots of books available through B&N and other sources. Kindle has many more apps but I don't care much about that because I do all that stuff on my iPhone. One thing I loved with the Nook was that my favorite magazine (Cooking Light) is available in a beautiful version tailored to the Nook. There is a Cooking Light app that's available for the Kindle to paper magazine subscribers but I really don't want the paper magazine. That could just push me over the edge. Plus I kind of want to give the underdog a chance.

I have currently 4 tablets, one that is strictly an ereader, I got each of us one, very inexpensive. My husband loves it and uses his daily, I really don't use that one anymore but it will be his backup. I got the first pandigital novel 7 inch tablet which was a great tablet but it is outdated as far as the version of android on it goes, that one I passed down to a family member. I also have a 7 inch Sylvania that was also inexpensive which I used a lot and still do on occasion, that one will not be updated either but is fine for my husband to use to read the kindle books on and play solitaire and check email or Google something which is about the extent of his use. The one I use daily is my Vizio Vtab 1008 tablet it is still being updated and it will get the latest version of android ics in the near future, Vizio mentioned that recently when showing the new 10 inch tablet they are releasing soon. I love my tech toys but I don't spend a lot of money on them. The Vizio is the most expensive one and I got it as a refurbished unit for a very good price, luckily it was perfect. The laptop is a gift I got for my husband, I rarely use it, I do the updates on it. I do have an Acer netbook that I did use quite a bit, and still do when I travel, I prefer the keyboard. For daily use my desktop is custom made has 2 hard drives one with Linux one with windows. I use Mepis Linux pretty much exclusively for daily use. I do have a couple of other towers but they are backup. Luckily my husband supports my addict.... Um I mean hobbies lol. He has been urging me to get the nexus already! I am resisting so far. I guess it is my one vice. It could be worse lol

I am interested in the Kindle Fire but can't seem to get a clear answer on this question: can it handle corporate (ie. workplace; mine is a university) e-mail accounts? That is, will I be able to read and answer my work e-mail on it? Some have said that it only handles gmail or hotmail accounts. Others have stated that you can convert ("drop"?) corporate e-mail accounts into gmail or hotmail. The Kindle Fire would be useless to me if I couldn't handle work e-mail.

I wish AT&T was everywhere! When we are in FL, we are 22 miles from the closest town, and in the middle of a national forest. No cell service out here. I did tons of research before I got my Nexus 7. From reading forums, etc., it seems you can't (or if you can, it involves a lot of stuff that's more than I want to tackle) put a Kindle app on a Nook and vice-versa. But putting a Kindle app on my Nexus was very easy. As well as email, Facebook, Words with Friends, etc. Last night, for the first time in years, I read in bed. Only had the Nexus for a light, and it didn't bother DH at all.

Raven - hope all is well with you and that you had a wonderful Christmas! - would you care to elaborate on what tablets you have and whether or not you recommend them? I got a kindle fire for Christmas, and although I like it, it's probably going back to Walmart this afternoon. I'm having some real issues with the battery not charging. Not sure if I should replace with another Kindle Fire or if there are better options. Thanks!

I considered it and thought it was a pretty good deal for the money, but was going to wait until the next version of it came out. I figured it would be improved and maybe come in a larger size. Then I got a deal on the more expensive Galaxy Tab and bought that. If you want to view an entertaining (but lengthy) video review, I've included the link below. It's by an Australian who reviews all kinds of elcetronic devices online. He is kind of quirky, but he knows his stuff and makes a number of good points. His bottom line is that it has some very good features and a number of shortcomings...and he concludes that he wouldn't get it. Well, it has been almost 3 months since I asked, and I'm happy to say that I bought the Fire in late November and I love it! Thank you to all for your comments.

I bought my B/F the Kindle Fire for Christmas, he is an avid reader and really likes it. He gave me an ipad and the ipad does everything the kindle does and more. We both end up using the ipad alot. I recommend getting an ipad instead, altho it does cost more.

Agree - it depends upon what you're looking for. I don't think they should be considered competitors. For me, the $199 Kindle Fire is perfect. For others, who want more (not sure what), the $499 iPad is perfect.

Two different markets, I think.

Yes, they are two totally different animals. :) The Kindle Fire is a vehicle for accessing Amazon's products and a great one at that it appears! The iPad can wear more hats and that's reflected in the price.

I do have an iPad (and love it) but was very interested in the Fire. I ordered it and would have kept it, but the screen size was a challenge to my....ahem....upper middle aged eyes. The portability of the Fire would have been a plus. Enjoy, everyone!
