unseal edges of my ipe porch floor

We are doing new constructions and they installed the ipe on the front porch Thursday and Friday. When I was a the site on Saturday, I realized they had not sealed the fresh cut edges as required. It is my understanding this is done to prevent cupping and checking. Even if they sealed the exposed edges now the edges that were cut and installed next to the house can't be sealed. If we are going to have a cupping or checking problem, how long before the problem will show up. Thanks in advance for any help or advise you can offer.

You can't compare the finishes on Ipe between a covered porch and an exposed deck...apples and oranges. Her deck is exposed to UV/rain/maybe snow...yours isn't. If she wasn't happy with Penofin, she just isn't going to be happy. steve

Finish the deck first. Do not consider any water-based sealants, especially if you want a rich natural wood look. The water based deck finishes are all just semi-transparent acrylic paint. I think they look terrible on tropical hardwood. I recommend the TWP, Penofin, Messmers, or Woodrich. All require annual recoatings to maintain the rich natural wood look. The advantage of these products is the annual recoating is really simple. There is no stripping of the old finish. Just clean, dry, and recoat. Summer is the best time of year to do this. Just check the weather forecast to make sure rain is not coming in the next few days.

It definitely seems like the Contractor used to much and / or didn't wipe off any excess after applying. Unfortunately the only way to get it off now is to sand it off. I would recommend using a floor sander if it's a large porch or if smaller use a orbital sander by hand. If it's a standard spaced deck and not Tongue and Grooved be sure to get in between the boards as best you can. Another UN-confirmed way (unconfirmed by me at least) would be to use a Deck Cleaner and Brightener like Messmers offers. I'm just not sure how well it would work, it's usually used to clean off the graying of faded material.

I am not a big fan of the V in the middle. I do like the round over in the joint just looks refined. Say Hi to the George for me. If you do go with the screw install be sure the pre drill dosent go past the ipe and into the framing this makes for sloppy fastining. JonMon

I dont know of any wood species where it isn't a good idea to seal all four sides including when cuts are made , before they are installed. Dependent on your location, you might never have a problem. If your decking is face screwed and unplugged, they can be easily taken up and sealed. If they are plugged, it's a little more involved but doable. Ask for John Hyatt over at the porches and decks forum as Coffehaus suggested to get his take on it.
