When that happened to me on my old keyboard before I bought a new wireless keyboard, I had some large lettered stickers I pressed on and that worked real well!

Mine are wearing off my microsoft keyboard to my PC too, at 2 years old :( So far, I've just been ignoring it, but someone typing here who did not know where N or M was could be in trouble.

I have a P-touch garden label-er for making plants tags that would size to fit, but all my tape is clear with black lettering. Wouldn't help much for a black keyboard.

At the low end price-wise, a new keyboard costs only a little more than a bottle of white nail polish

I have a Brother p-touch labeler with some white 1/2" tapes with black lettering. If you drop me an email, and let me know what you are needing, I'll make some up for you and mail them to you....or I can just send the whole alphabet.

Fingernail polish and/or Wite-Out didn't work well for me.

If I was a betting man, and I am not, I would bet it is the A, the E and maybe the N.

I have heard of users who have claimed to have applied clear nail polish on the basin face of the key to preserve the remaining portion of the letter.

If money is an issue keyboards can be had in charity/second hand stores for $1 to $3 and many are in excellent condition.

Since the OP said this was a LAPTOP not sure he would want an external keyboard. You can have the keys replaced on your laptop or a whole new one put in, you would have to check local shops to see the prices for that.

There are stick on letters and numbers made specifically for that purpose some work well some start to roll up and peel off pretty quickly. If you go that route be sure to check user reviews so you can find out from real users how they hold up.

Of course since so many have suggested a new or used external keyboard that is an option but not sure that would be what you want especially if you do use the laptop for portability.

I purchased one of those rubbery roll up keyboards to have as a backup which I could easily carry along in my laptop bag, it was ok but I hated the force with which you had to push on the keys, I ended up giving it away.

damccoy, You should be a betting man. Guess what... The three rubbed off letters on the keys are A E N :)

I just looked, my E is missing the top extension. Lenovo, bought april of this year.
Maybe I can add some tape and nail polish a straight line.

The three mentioned letters are the most common letters to disappear. On my keyboard the T, the D, the O, the H, the M, the N and the R all show wear.

A simple guess is they are the most commonly used.

The disappearing letter complaint has surfaced here, off-and-on, for years. Ladies' nails, mens' rough hands (finger tips), and general wear and tear seem to be the cause. Plus, some users type harder than others. I know I can be a "pounder" at times.

I think another cause of letters fading are hand oils and acids. Often letters where fingers rest even while not typing will fade faster. My current Logitech keyboard is still like new, whereas the keyboard that came with my desktop pc has some faded letters. Never had the problem with two HP laptops or a Dell laptop. Now my wireless mouse is showing some wear where my hand rests on top. Again I believe it is oils and/or acids from the skin.

Shouldn't the laptop be under some kind of warranty if it's only a year old? Seems the letters shouldn't be wearing off this quickly.

My 4-year old Toshiba laptop keyboard is just like new. And, an almost 10-year old desktop keyboard only has the 'L' and 'O' fading a bit. I must be typing LOL alot. lol.

I've been living with an (almost) letter-less keyboard for a few years. Luckily I can type without looking, but it does bother me. And when my DH wants to use the laptop, he's sh*it out of luck without the letters.

I use letter stickers to replace them but they wear off as well. I even tried clear nail polish over them so they wouldn't wear away, but do. Even a sharpie wears away.

Not all laptop brand keyboards are created equal. My Gateway letters were gone in a 3 year period. I've had this thing for over 5 years, and it's still running great (thanks to Zep, Raven, and a few others). My sis's Toshiba was old and never had worn letters. I used my laptop all day, everyday...for work and pleasure so it gets tons of use.

Yes, It depends on the manufacturer of the keyboard. Some have the letters set in which is nice. I am on my little Acer Netbook right now and love the keyboard on it.

This bing search came up with 4,668 responses "computer key labels" ---- (no quote marks). Try that, you may like it.

Ha...how many of us stopped and looked at their keyboards after reading this....I did. My husband has to see the letters, but I don't. I'm not sure how he has been doing it because I have a lot of letters worn off...mine aren't flat...they are sort of indented where the white on the letters used to be...a person "could" take a fine brush and put them on, but it's not worth it. My husband hasn't complained and it doesn't bother me because I never look when I'm typing....

I learned to type in about 5th grade. I made rapid progress to 10 words per minute (before mistakes). They then put blank caps on all the keys. After that my score got low.
