Comments (1)Smart siding is still a composite siding...it is made of glued sawdust. I "wood" not use it....See MoreHardie plank vs cedar shingles
Comments (8)If you want to do cedar siding, I'd highly recommend installing a rainscreen behind it. This allows it to dry out from the backside and helps it hold paint and resist rot much better than siding applied directly up against the tyvek and sheathing. Several companies make premade rainscreens (Benjamin Obdyke's Homeslicker is one of them) but it's also simple to do one yourself with furring strips. The trick is to make sure the flashing and trim are done correctly to accomodate the depth of the rainscreen - the benjamin obdyke website has good diagrams to show you how it should be done....See MoreHardie Plank & insurance...same coverage as vinyl siding??
Comments (10)You really don't want an insurance agent that doesn't understand buildings. It's part of their job to be knowledgeable about the things that affect premiums. Even if Allstate doesn't give a discount for cement board siding, the industry in general does give one, and the agent should know that. Consider shopping your insurance needs around....See MoreSiding repair / replacement Vinyl vs Hardi
Comments (2)We replaced our cedar siding with Hardi plank. At first we only did the front of the house because we also had woodpecker damage. The corners did not match up as far as the size of the boards was concerned but you would only notice that if you were standing at the corner and looking at the front and side at the same time and knew that they were different size boards. We liked the siding so much that we did the two sides a year later. We have not done the back of the house yet. We have had the siding installed for about 4 years now and there have been no issues. The color is exactly the same as the day it was installed. It was expensive but IMO looks much better than vinyl siding...See MoreAnnie Deighnaugh
