I'll never replace an appliance just because it's "old".

Sorry for your problems! I have a KA fridge for 3 years, and it has performed flawlessly, including the icemaker. Can you provide detail on what kind of fridge you have? I.e., SxS or bottom door, built-in or not. Mine is a SxS cabinet-depth, not built-in. I have read on this forum that the KA Built-ins have been problematic; perhaps they're made in a different factory or something than the other KA fridges.

I've had a KA fridge for 6 years now and no problems except for a cracked piece of plastic in my icemaker which I replaced myself. Also, no problems with KA DW or compactor in 6 years.

Ice makers do tend to be problem prone.

Sadly, these days, appliances aren't made like they used to. A lot of people these days seem to be saying I'll never buy brand XXX again. Unfortunately, at that rate, there won't be any brands left to buy :-)

I don't have a KA refrigerator. My complaint is in regards to a built-in, undercounter icemaker machine. I never understood why anyone needed one of these--until I moved to the South. Now, we use ice like crazy. We do fundraiser overnights here because we have the room for them. People are used to coming here and helping themselves. Some think the neatest thing about our kitchen is that d**n icemaker! KA promised their "Resource" division would call me in 24 hours. Well, it has been 20, and I've not heard a thing. . .

I am a Michigan girl and if you saw how much KitchenAid stuff is in my house, you'd swear I work for them.

But, there is not one major KA appliance (except for washer and dryer) that has not been serviced.

Well, they didn't call. So I called them. I'm on my own. I have to find (and pay) someone to diagnose the problem and if the problem is on a warranty-covered part, KA will "probably" pay for that, but maybe not.

After another dozen or so calls and one visit from an independent, highly knowledgeable repair person, KitchenAid agreed to replace the entire unit. On Wednesday, they said it would take 2 weeks. Today, I got a call from one of their repair sources. They came and installed the new one--a newer model, supposedly an improvement, with better water and energy efficiency. So, after the first batch, we'll see.

Just chiming in... I have a KA KP26M1XPM Pro 600 mixer, KA KFP750OB food processor, KA KSB560OB 5-speed blender, and KA KMTT400SS toaster. All purchased on Amazon when on sale. I also own the KA counter-depth fridge, Ultima Cook Oven, and Architect Series convection oven.

While I have not had any issues, I've read plenty of complaints from folks. I personally believe it's due to the country of origin: China. China just does not have the quality control and oversight. Just like "Made in Japan: was synonymous with "crap,", Made in China means the same (in general).

Electronics from the Japanese companies are notable: less defects... so why is KA having issues? Its the "hands off" approach... they do not care enough to put out a quality product.

It's a shame in this day and age that I have to consider myself "lucky" compared to others.

Follow-up: KitchenAid replaced the entire icemaker with the new equivalent Architect II series icemaker with internal pump. It took 24 hours to male the first full batch of ice, which was discarded, per directions. The new icemaker version does not make clear ice; the ice is smaller, despite having the same "official" specs; and the ice is softer than that from the old icemaker. The company that was too busy to deal with the initial call was the one that came out and did the replacement. That company no longer sells KA icemakers because of all the complaints, but did say that KA has attempted to address the problems with this new model.
